I would say that the difference is that you must use Apple. You don't have to use Google.

They would sell a ton of them but Apple has always been content within their high-end niche so I'd be really surprised if they ever did that.

Not so sure that is true. In setting up my repaired Triumph, I found no way around signing up for one or more Google services. Someone can correct me, and corrections are welcome. The Market requires Google accounts, right? Obviously email is needed but it seems no matter what I did, I was taken to a Google signup page.

You are not suggesting that a cheaper, smaller iPad would not be high quality, are you? I say if they introduced one, it would sell extremely well. Not sure what Apple will do with Steve gone.

You don't have to use Google's market. You can use Amazon's or GetJar to name two alternatives. A for email, AFAIK, you're not forced to use gmail either.

Dropbox and the like will make all the difference for me on this. The storage was the one thing stopping me from deciding it would be useful, but given the price point and "relative" openness (as compared to Nook), I definitely think I can find ways around the storage issue. Especially with root.
