There is a new video player for android called Rock Player that plays most file formats without conversion. I tested it on an avi file and played smoothly at 24 fps. Its in beta therefore not in the marketplace. I do have the apk. Pm me for it or google it
Just tested this program, it seems to work VERY well. Played a few AVI/Divx movies on it, very smooth. Audio seems to go a bit wonky every once in a while, but I couldn't really tell for sure (Might have just been background noise around me making it sound odd). The interface is very simple, but totally functional.
All in all, very very nice solution for playing AVI's!
Oh yea, it was getting 20-24 frames per second, according to the little counter in the upper right corner. Sounds low, but it looked fine to me. Course I heard somewhere recently that DVD's are encoded at 24FPS... If that's true, then it makes sense that this program would play at 24 FPS.
Oh, and seach for "RockPlayerBase" to find more info on Google. "Rock Player Base" doesn't come up with anything.

"We all know of Android's video codec limitations (i.e., no AVI or MKV support). Many Android players promising AVI playback have been, to put it lightly, disappointments. Over the past few weeks, however, there has been much buzz surrounding Android's newest video player, RockPlayer, that reportedly plays AVI and MKV files without a hiccup. However, up until today, the beta for RockPlayer had been private, and the versions floating around were not authorized by the developer (i.e., warez).
Today, this has all changed! I am pleased to announce that the developer, "Water.E" has released RockPlayer Beta to the public! I personally have been using RockPlayer for sometime now, and have been impressed by the app's exceptional playback. For example, while displaying an AVI file full-screen, I get a fluid 24fps playback, with minimal audio sync issues and relatively no skipping. In my opinion, RockPlayer is the best video player for Android. Also note, RockPlayer is also equipped to play the standard Android video format, MP4, as well. "
I've been using Rockplayer for about a week now and this thing is amazing! the fact that it is able to play .avi without converting it to mp4 saves alot of time. the picture quality is good as well.
The video is generally pretty nice. It has a few distortions. The audio is having problems with the MKV's that I have tried. The app is awesome for a beta and it will only improve.

It's not perfect, but it's better than anything anyone else has done on the platform thus far. I can't wait till they get hardware acceleration working, and subtitles.
Wow! Much improved over the original "leaked" version on xda "Rockplayerbase" demo ... mp4 playback is on par with the stock player and avi picture quality is better!
haven't
people sure are trusting. especially if you do banking or credit card stuff on your phone this chit is crazy
these phones are PC's. they can monitor mails, txts, calls, login information. And you want to run it from china who's already on record for hacking google and government institutions?

US government and private hackers have done much worse, yet US developers don't get stuck with the same rep, do they?
That said, your security points are not moot ... I wonder if some kind of android security clearinghouse could exist. How well does the marketplace itself check what apps do with the data they pull? Sure it tells you but what does it really mean for the average user?

this is why I only have like 10 apps downloaded. Lots of interesting stuff that has nothing to do with phone calls asks for that permission.
I think they need to be more specific and jailed
for instance if it needs system settings.. which system setting? will that information be sent over the network? or does the app use that information for internal processing. All this would probably be way too complicated to do and shy off developers with much extra work.
my first smart phone and i know nothing of android security so until i read alot im sticking with the top 10 apps kinda stuff.
So what's the verdict. Is this app safe to install?
There's been some issues with it not working right for some people but it's safe. No one has reported anything to differ from that. I've had it for two weeks now and it works great for me!

If you can access and inspect the code base, it is usually safe, because many people will look at the code to check against malicious codes. But still there is always a risk.
Still the idea of the Android platform/app market is openness, unlike Apple approach of wall garden. With that much openness come also with mandatory responsibility, so android user beware
just tried it works. Now question like if you have a dvd do you have to encode it first to then save it on your evo? If so what are the specs? I have handbrake.

Do you, or anyone else have any examples of someone using bad software to take over a phone? Security is good but there is no problem until there is a problem.

I would love to know who made/makes this program and if they have a website. I would gladly help chip in a little to support the efforts of the rock player if I knew where it came from.
Yep sure does. I was feeding a video last night to my TV using HDMI and RockPlayer.
I just downloaded RockPlayer and have been able to play MP4s (created with handbrake) via HDMI. They looked OK, I didn’t really notice a difference in quality from the default player.
When I downloaded the 720p Big Buck Bunny avi file it plays on the phone (looks really good) but won’t output over HDMI.
Below are the details on the .avi file as downloaded (not run through HandBrake), any reason this file would play on the phone with RockPlayer but not over HDMI?
Height 720
Width 1280
Data rate of 4008kbps
Total bitrate 4456kbps
24 frames/second
File size 316 MB

"Taking over a phone" would be low on the priority list. In fact just the opposite, you'd want the person to use the phone just like they always do, so as to be able to harvest data without being noticed.
Ok finally got it to work. Had to unistall the previous Demoplayer I had before Rock could install. It seems smooth. Plays my avi and MP4 vids fine. Plus it continues where I left off which is the main problem I had with the stock player

I also could not get several avi file to play over the HDMI. They look great on the phone. I did not try any MP4 files through Rockplayer. Has anyone gotten an avi file to play through the HDMI?
