I was very confused when I looked at the list of my contacts the first ftime after syncing them to the Desire. Only then I realized: this thing is sorting first names first! I find this most annoying and unusual. And worse: I found no setting, yet, that would allow me to choose the sorting.

Can one change that somehow? Or is this really hardcoded?

Try using Dialer One as an alternative to the internal contacts app.

To be technical, it is not sorting by first name. Google does not save the first and last name separately.

Oh my goodness! And how would HTC Sync then synchronize added or modified contacts back into Outlook? Creating complete mess along the way?

They want you to search for your contacts rather than scrolling through the list.
