You can text through GV for free but you can't call for free. You are still charged minutes. If you have Friends and Family, you can designate your GV number as one of your friends and all your calls will not add to your minutes. But, you still need a calling plan with F&F.

I do not have a text plan through Verizon. In fact, I have blocked all text messages through my Verizon #. I text all the time, back and forth, using GV.

Same here, I had no plan for a little while but just recently decided to have all TXT Blocked because I was getting spam messages (and paying .20 each for the pleasure), so It's now blocked.

GV for SMS is not flawless (not as fast as true SMS) and GV SMS does not support short codes (i.e. can't register your GV number for twitter,aim to receive messages). Nor does it support Pictures (MMS).

But I got tired of paying my cell carrier for txt data when I was already paying for unlimited web data.
