Contact limitation in Android??

I have a user that has 6000+ contacts that she wants to have imported in to her Android phone. I'm not very familiar with Android however I know that most phones have a limit on contacts that can be stored. Is there a hard coded limitation or is Android only limited by the amount of storage on the phone itself?
