question, if I text someones normal number through the google voice app, is that taking up a text still?

Just make sure you don't have text notifications turned on. If you do, when they reply, you will get the message via the Google Voice app (using data) and your phone's message app (using text messages).

Go the the GV website on your computer. Then go to Settings --> Voice Settings --> Phones and edit your cell phone. Is the "Text Settings" box unchecked?

Make sure that both text notifications and SMS forwarding are disabled. Both will count against you and they're in different locations in the Settings area of the full GV site. I don't recall if both options are in the GV app.

SMS forwarding is under Settings->Voice Settings (hit the Edit button for your phones). Notifications are under Settings->Voice Settings->Voicemail and Text.
