The data does stay after an uninstall. I had the force close issue as well, then I uninstalled and reinstalled and all my problems were fixed. Just to be sure I copied the data to another folder on the SD card but uninstalling didn't seem to delete the original acar data folder on there. Can anyone else confirm this too before people start doing it based on my experience?
-EDIT
Others have lost data when uninstalling!! Back up before you uninstall.
Yes, the key is to backup your data before updating. And I would like to stress once more that only Android 1.5 devices are affected. Other devices won't have any problems for upgrading...
I'm so sorry for the data loss. You can take a look at my other reply (aCar - Track your vehicles) to find out why it has happened.
Please note that taking backup of your data has been always important in any software. You can easily lose your data with a phone crash or reset, hardware failure and many other reasons.
That's why I've implemented the backup feature. Please please please backup your data before anything bad happens...
well, I uninstalled, and reinstalled, and get the force close still...
well, now it opened, but no data
the backup files are still there, along with the renamed copies. Auto restore, the one time it probably tried to happen, caused the force close. Manual restore is unavailable in the free version.
Ok, retried the remove and reinstall, and it worked, luckily the last backup was between a fillup and the update.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Yes, it can be a good trick to uninstall and reinstall in order to run the auto restore if the previous auto restore has failed.
By the way, would you please do me a favor and send me the backup file which you've failed with?
Thank you,

I wonder if mine stayed because I copied it. My information is stored in com.zonewalker.acar.
I have mine set to back up automatically so it may have just been my most recent copy that was put back in to the program.
The main problem with many of the users who have lost their data is that they didn't have any backup of their data at all!
If one has taken backup in regular order, the files are stored on phone SD Card and uninstalling the application won't delete them! The first time he launches the "reinstalled" version, the auto-restore will popup and restore his data from the backup files.
Note: When you uninstall an application (whatever not just aCar), Android deletes its database as well but DOES NOT TOUCH the contents of SD Card. So backup is the key here, as it is with many other softwares...
When I released v2.0.0, and 2.0.1 after that, I was busy enough for not to update this thread to announce the release and to ask for feedback (although I've already got many)...
Now it's the time! Guys, I need your feedback and comments on this major update... Keep them coming! Thankssss! :-)

Thank you,
the problem here is, on first updating, it worked, I browsed through the new interface, it failed when I tried opening it to add a fill up later.
the first time I'd uninstalled and reinstalled it, it still force closed.
the second time, it just didn't find the backup files(due to SD card being mounted on the computer I think, forgot to select unmount) and opened with no data.
the third time, it worked.
as it worked, there is no file it failed with now.
Thanks awesome ! for this details it help i can easily update my vehicle because some time we dont have time that time we have forget to do service of car and vehicle but this application is very beneficial for us.
Since I don't think I've backed up, I downloaded 1.3.1 (Hero running 1.5) and installed it but still get a FC error each time I try to open the program. It gets farther than it did with 2.x.x though, meaning that I now get the header bar with aCar in it instead of not advancing past a black screen.
Okay! One more vote! It seems I have to start the implementation pretty soon ;-)
Yes yes yes! And if at all possible to incorporate the ability to import data from ProfileMD for Palm OS, that would be even more amazing. I wish I knew how to program so I could create this app myself.
Just found and loaded your app so far it looks great!
Is there a spot to save basic maintenance info for each vehicle like Oil/Air Filter, headlight numbers and such to save you looking them up when you need them?
I'm going to use this to also track our ATVs so this will be pretty useful! Only thing is you usually track ATV and work equipment maintenance by hours instead of miles.
The main problem with many of the users who have lost their data is that they didn't have any backup of their data at all!
Would you believe that I was just going to look into what aCar meant by "backup" when I got the first FC? I was curious because of the $/day discrepancy, I thought if I tried a backup/export I might look at the data to see if it was really going wrong.
I am in the same boat as user "Spuzzem" reported, after installing the older version you gave a link to I now can get a blue screen with the aCar title bar at the top - but then another FC.
Is there anything else that can be done to recover the data? I had assumed it was stored on the SD card and I could just copy it off before an uninstall but now I see that it isn't.
This is a Sprint HTC Hero, so it is 1.5 of course.
My backup is stored on my sdcard under data/com.zonewalker.acar. See if that is on your sdcard.
I backup my information every time I complete any entry in acar just to be safe. That way if I redo a ROM or change a theme or whatever, I know my information is recoverable. Just a click away.

Then you should do a clean install (uninstall any installed version and reinstall) and you can directly go for 2.x.x.
If you want to know what's going on and why this bug came up all of a sudden, please read the "Important Note" section (at "Introduction" block) at the following address: ZoneWalker.com » aCar
You can follow the link I've provided there which points to Android 1.5 which has caused this entire problem!!

Is this widely used in Palm world? I have no problem adding as many application import as I can, but I should be sure it's something popular and is (or has been) widely used.
- EDIT: Further checking ProfileMD shows that it's used for health tracking! Is this what you meant?

For the moment, you can use "Notes" field in vehicle to record such information. But I have a plan to add some further fields support to vehicles.

You are right. And I'm getting more votes for supporting ATVs, bikes and boats which are all based on hours. I'm not sure how well I can integrate such features in order to keep the usage simple. From what I can see, I don't see this implemented in near future. I should think and brainstorm more about this... Or I might need to come up with a new app. Who knows! ;-)
I just installed 2.0.2, and I still see the same issue. Am I doing something wrong?
Cad
Don't you have any fillup records? The "Total" block in statistics sum up both fillup and service values... If you want service specific or fillup specific stats, you should look at their own blocks.
By the way, would you please send me (email) a backup of your data so that I can restore here and investigate more on your problem?

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. If you're experiencing the same problem even after installing 1.3.1, you have no other option but to uninstall any version you have and do a clean install of 2.x.x.
By uninstalling the app, you will lose your data if you do not have any backup.
Your backup files (if any) are stored on your SD Card at the following directory:
/data/com.zonewalker.acar/
Hope there will be some automatic backup files there to restore from.
Unfortunately this was completely out of my control as I've already stated. There is a bug (issue #2047: Issue 2047 - android - Market copy protection totally breaks file access after updating - Project Hosting on Google Code) in Android 1.5 which causes this problem when a developer changes the copy protection flag of his application... But why did I change that flag? Because not all Android devices can see the copy protected apps. I've already received many complaints from users who could not find aCar in Google Market. I had to remove the copy protection flag so that everybody could find the app... and you know the rest!
Again I do apologies for all the inconvenience I've caused you :-(
I tried to go over all the posts and may have missed some. Is there a way to import data from a CSV file, more specifically transfer data from Gas Cubby to aCar? Please let me know. I just switched to Android and would like to keep my more than 2 years of data.
Let me know. Thanks.
Update: Never mind, I see the CSV import option and will be going over the help section.

Reason: Mentioned the wrong iPhone app
specifically transfer data from Gas Cubby to aCar?
I also use Gas Cubby on my ipod touch. Let me know how the import goes when switching to aCar. I have been messing around with aCar a little and am thinking about switching but I have a couple of years of data in Gas Cubby.

I have not imported data into aCar yet, for now I continue to use Gas Cubby on the (jail broken) iPhone. I will post an update after doing the import.

Thanks. I tried for about an hour past night but the aCar application kept closing when I would try and import the csv file. Let me know how it works out for you.

Please email me the CSV file you're trying to import.

Hi Crumm,
I was able to import data into aCar without any problem. One thing I ran into was the date and time issue. Gas Cubby exports date and time fields. I believe aCar imports only the date (please correct me if I am wrong). Initially was selecting the wrong date format, after select date in mm/dd/yyyy format it works perfectly for me. Remember you have to export gas and service records separately from Gas Cubby. When doing the import into aCar, again you have to import gas and service reports separately.
I'm just over two weeks on Android and have been looking for a app primarily to track mileage. I did download this and had a problem entering old data. I don't have my phone here so I'm not positive, but it seems there was some required field (date?) for which I have no info. The ONLY information I have (and want to enter/import) is odometer reading and amount of gas put in the tank (always do fill-ups).
I don't mind having date and other stuff from now on but DO want my old info available to track mpg based on odometer readings (like to make a graph with odometer across the bottom and mpg up the side)
So if I import, will it work with ONLY the odometer and # Gallons as data. I also have the calculated mpg in a column and don't know if that should be an imported column or if aCar imports odometer and gallons that it will do the calculations.
firstly...thanks for this app - it's great really. Only been playing with it for 5 minutes and I have to say I'm very happy with it already.
I do have one MAJOR glitch on my Nexus One. Text input is an absolute nightmare as the keys simply don't respond well at all....i attempt to "backspace/delete" a letter and it goes to "next"....other keys cause random spaces.
I do not experience this with any other application I have installed.
Is this something you are aware of...other than this it's great but it makes it unusable sometimes.
This looks like a useful app and I tried to download it to my Droid phone. However, the download was blocked by the system because it was classed as a "non-market" application along with a warning about such programs exposing the user to all sorts of nefarious deeds.
I'd like to use the program, but won't do so until the system thinks it's safe to use.
No doubt this kind of thing is frustrating for you as a developer (cheers to you for your effort), but do you know how the program can be vetted for safe use?
regards,
Tredder

Attached is a copy of the .ABP file, please let me know how to clear old reminders.
Thank You.
I just restored your backup file and checked a few of your reminders in random. They all seem to be correct... Would you please give me an explicit example of a service type you've already enter a record for but the reminder is still there?

Yes, aCar needs date/time field as well. Date/Time is used for many reports and time-based charts.

MPG column won't be used since aCar calculates that value by itself. But you need to have a date column to import your data.

If you're talking about numeric fields, you have the option (on app Settings) to switch between keypad or QWERTY keyboard whichever fits your needs. As for text (non numeric) input, I'm using the standard keyboard available in Android. No further tweaks have been done there!

It's so weird. Are you downloading aCar from Google Market and your phone indicates it as a non market app? All apps have to be signed to be accepted by Google Market. And the signature of aCar has not be changed since version 1.0.0.
Has anyone else experienced such similar problem even with other apps?
I downloaded the app and imported my info from roadtrip (first ten lines). So far so good but I'm trying to get a reminder to show up. I set it up so that I have an oil change due but cannot seem to get it to show a reminder. What am I missing?

You should enter at least one Oil Change service record so that aCar starts tracking that service for you.

There is an oil change entered on March 22, 2010. I have set it up to remind me every 3 months so a reminder should be showing up right now but it isn't. I know I'm just missing something simple here.
I've been using Roadtrip on my Ipod Touch for the past year and three months. I just got my first droid phone and acar looks like a great replacement.
Been using this app for several weeks. Works great. Coming from the iPhone I was worried that I wouldn't find an app to replace Cubby, which now I realize sucked in comparison to aCar. Thanks!
Ok, got the reminder to work, now a question. Is the only place a reminder shows up on the 'view vehicle' screen? Will it not put a notification beside the icon on the home screen?
Ok, I just did a fill up and a reminder 'popped up' about an oil change overdue. I cannot get that to repeat. I think this program is going to work for me as I will soon be donating. Is there any chance of getting the reminders in the main screen to be on top instead of having to scroll all the way to the bottom? It just brings it to your attention better.
I have been a long term user (4 years and multiple vehicles) of Personal Vehicle manager on my WinMo 6. Its time for a change of phone and I am considering the HTC Desire. What is stopping me from taking the plunge is a couple of applications, Personal Vehicle Manager among them.
This has a Desktop application that is very useful when reviewing data. Also mine has 4 years worth of data in it.
What I want to know is, is there a sure shot method of importing data from Perosnal Vehicle Manager ? How is it done ?
Is a desktop version planned in any future ? Please clarify.
