Default Transfer Purchases Between Google Accounts From Android Market

The following is from a post from my website. If this is not the appropriate place to place this post, mods please feel free to move it.

When I first bought my Droid Incredible I used one of my lesser known Gmail accounts as my default account. I then purchased some programs via the Android Market with that account (which for the sake of clarity, it will be called "account #1"). I then decided that I wanted to use my primary email address on my phone as the default. To change this I had to do a factory reset. Once I changed the email account (which we'll call "account #2"), all the purchases I had made under account #1 were not able to be accessed/downloaded. The following is an explanation on Android Market Help forums of how I was able to re-download the programs and install them.

This isn't really a fix, but a workaround.

If you REALLY want to get the apps back then what you need to do is download a program from the market that backs up apps onto your SD card. If you have root access (if you don't know what that means, you don't have it) you can use a program like Titanium Backup:

If you don't have root, you can use a program like Astro File Manager:

Hit the menu key on your phone to bring up the tools menu:

Click on tools, then pick the applications manage/backup here:

Back up your current programs (purchased with your current default Android Market account) on TO YOUR SD CARD.

Now for the bad news. If you really want these programs, you're going to have to do a factory reset on your phone. Once you do this, you'll have to re-enter a default Gmail account. Sign in with account #1. Once you've downloaded all the apps from that account, back them up using either Titanium or Astro. Once they are backed up TO YOUR SD CARD, you're going to need to reset your phone again. Sign in the second time with account #2. Now you simply use Astro File manager to locate the .apk files in your backup folder on your SD card and reinstall the programs:

open the apps manager and reinstall the file. You can do this with the files you downloaded from account #2. The downside to this method is that you will not be able to upgrade the programs without doing a factory reset again. Basically you have the programs but can't update them. It's a bummer, but it's better than not having them all.

Android Market does need to fix this. But until they do, you can use this method. I also go the extra step of copying my backup folder over to my computer in case something happens to my phone, I still have all my purchased programs. Like I said, this isn't a fix, but a workaround.

Keep in mind that a factory reset returns your phone to its state before you got it. It wipes out a lot of stuff. I keep my contacts and calendars synced via Google and my application data is backed up via Titanium Backup, so it's not that big of a deal.

These backed up apps can be installed on the new handset, but will not update as purchase will not be validated.

While that is true, it's only a concern with updating but not operation of the application.

I really messed up and reactivated a replacement phone with a different email than a bunch of my other purchases. Then I proceeded to register a bunch of apps that I had always been meaning to get the full version of on another account. Now I have half my apps on one account and half on the other.

I've emailed google's support team, and they haven't answered, I guess piracy is my only other option. I'll never buy anything else from the android market again, if I like a program enough to keep I'll paypal the author some cash.

My question to the OP is this: why not just add the second address in the settings/accounts section, and disable gmail sync for the first account? This would allow you to be logged in to the market with that account, and use your second account as much as you would like without the factory reset

This will work (sort of)! The google market will always sign you in using the 'primary account'. Its not just the google market either. I am also having problems using a secondary account with the gtalk app.

Is there a way with the captivate to "log out" the main account and "log in" the 2nd account without doing a factory reset and losing everything?

I think the new market supports multiple accounts so all those steps arent needed anymore.

Just press menu > accounts in the Market app

I have yet to use this feature myself though.

now that you need a G+ account to leave reviews and feedback. moving your purchases from one google account to another is even more importantant than ever... all my apps are associated with an old google account and I want to move them to my new google account.

This. I have no intention of creating a duplicate Google+ profile just for app reviews.

At least now the multiple account problems are solved in all apps so I can just buy new apps on my new account and leave the old ones as it is.
