I travel on the road a lot for work, and travelling expenses are probably my largest tax write-off. Yet, I've been unable to find a nice app in the marketplace that allows me to simply input my starting odometer and my ending odometer when I get home, and arrive at a simple calculation as to how many miles I traveled on that particular trip, and what my approximate tax write-off would be.
On the Iphone, I used to use an app called "MileBug". It was great. Sadly I haven't been able to find anything that compares to that app in android.
Do any of you know of a good app for such a purpose? I'm not interested in the plethora of apps available to monitor my gas mileage or my MPG. I just want a simple application that allows me to quickly record my miles traveled per trip.

I'm with you - and surprisingly there aren't many for Blackberry, either, and yet a business focused phone is missing this type of app. I'm going to subscribe to this thread and maybe someone (or even a developer) will latch on and give us what we need. And I couldn't agree more - I don't care about the gas mileage, I need BUSINESS MILES traveled. It would be nice if it remembered your mileage from the last ending miles as your beginning miles, but beggars can't be choosers at this point!
sportstracker is a awesome app. maps your route via gps and will give you average speed, distance, and a graph of your altitude and speed. doesn't do exactly what you said but may be helpful!
There are 2 programs in the market called acar and mileage that are intended to keep track of gas mileage but I'm guessing they would work for this just as easily.
I use Mileage Ledger for tracking my business mileage and love it. It remembers your last mileage so if you don't need to change it you can just click start and you are good to go.
I will look at mileage tracker.... but I am also curious why you can't just use a simple spreadsheet for this. I have a google.doc spreadsheet that I set up on my computer, and have access to it online. I have even bookmarked it in my droid browser and can simply put in starting mileage as I get in the car, end mileage as I get out.
it's web based, so I can enter it while on the road and it's there for me to print in April from my computer, no syncing data, etc. I have 2 vehicles that I use, and the spreadsheets are set up (from home, prior to the fiscal year) so I can have seperate pages for separate vehicles, added up for one grand total. Plus a separate page for fees like uniforms (I ref is the 'business') hotels, food, even gas.
I published TripsnMiles Premium last week. I wrote it years ago because I needed something on my Windows Mobile phone, and I rewrote if for Android because I switched to a Nexus One in January and did not want to carry my old phone with me just for the mileage app.
Since I use one of my cars exclusively for business, I was not so much interested in the calculation of the tax deduction (I deduct 100%), but this would be an interesting feature.
The free version does not have the export to CSV feature. The premium version writes a CSV file to the SD card and optionally sends the file as an email attachment to the address that is configured.
I was never a fan of MileBug on the iPhone. I used Trip Cubby for much the same reason that you're using and I loved it. I don't know if there's a version for Droid or not.
Please check out our new VR Mileage Tracker App on the Android Market! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time. Would appreciate any feedback on the product if you decide to try it!
I too use Mileage Tracker. You can use it simply to keep track of daily mileage by entering the starting mileage and ending mileage (it does however automatically input the next days starting mileage as the previous days ending mileage). You can also get more involved by having it figure a user defined rate per mile.
You can also backup the database to the sd card. Of course you can email the database as a spreadsheet.
I like the app. Your mileage may vary.
My old Palm is still working. My major application is a mileage tracker for both business and personal, and also when i do maintenance for income tax purposes. This has saved me valuable time at income tax time for several years. The program is called Quickmile from quickmile.com. I can track start stop and give each trip a destination name. I can even export to excel spreadsheet and compile by month. Ive been checking some of the apps out I don't need gps to tell me how far i've gone. but to be able to have a conduit to excel is invaluable. does anybody have a simple app for android no of anything coming down the pipe
I use Mileage Tracker on my BB Bold. I think it might be different than the Mileage Tracker others are referring to. The one I purchased uses the GPS. Launch the app, click Start Tracking and when you are finished Stop Tracking ..done! You can then input any related expenses and email the report. Awesome!

Sure hope something comparable is available soon
There is something similar that I've been testing called Trip Master. It works pretty good but there are some improvements that need to be made to help comply with the IRS rules. I contacted the developer and they said they are working on an update. We'll see.

Trip Master looks promising. I like the clean interface however it does not support Kilometers (unless I am missing something). Perhaps the dev can include this in an update.

We added the kilometer option to our VR Mileage Tracker after a request from a user from "Down Under" !
I could see an app like this hogging battery like no other.....GPS on alot...even if it were increments....alot....better have a car charger handy.
Some people hate battery hogging apps. All depends how high the desire for the app is though
It depends on how the app is programmed. The one I've got doesn't keep GPS on all the time. It turns on GPS when I launch it and when it goes to sleep in the background, GPS goes away. I never see GPS turn on while I'm driving. How it tracks my mileage exactly I have no clue, but I've sat there and taken odometer readings before and after and compared them to the app and it's extremely accurate.

Cool. Does VR use the GPS?
I am now trying out Mileage Genie and so far so good. Simplicity is the key for me and this app has it. Launch...Voice record purpose of trip... Start (GPS begins tracking)...Stop. It tracks in KMs too. The only thing missing compared to my BB app is a utility to add expenses related to the trip.
I punted Trip Master... too many prompts just to start recording a trip and no KMs.
If it proves reliable over the 15 days I may take the plunge on MG. Anyone else give this a shot?
I've been using an app called Driver Log to track my mileage I drive for work. The app is simple, but it works. It has a start button and and end button. You press start and gets your current location. You press End when you get where you're going and it gets your end destination. Then it calculates the distance and uploads it to a Google docs spreadsheet. Again, it's simple, but it works.
The problem is that under 2.2 it doesn't work well. I gets your starting destination, but if the phone sleeps before you get to your destination, this is lost so your whole trip is a bust. The app is no longer in the market so I can assume the developer has no plans on fixing this. Can anyone suggest a similar app?
One of the apps I really miss from my BB days was called Mileage Tracker. It used the GPS to track your route but the real beauty of it was it's simplicity. Launch app - click Start Tracking, then Stop Tracking - done! You could even add any relevant expenses in a quick to enter utility.
Since the move to Android I am struggling to find something comparable. So far...
Trip Master - nice clean interface but too many prompts to start a trip, no support for kms. Some trips disappeared for no apparent reason.
Mileage Genie - I was optimistic about this one. Had the simplicity of my BB app, supported KMs and seemed accurate. I started with the 15 day trial but by day 10, too many force closes and errors. Punted!
AndiCar - I uninstalled this after finding Mileage Genie but reinstalled it yesterday. Best of the bunch so far IMO if you prefer GPS tracking. Fairly easy to start a trip, expense and fill-up utilities but I don't like the cluttered, hard to read interface. I also find it has too many fields associated with simple entries. It's free and seems to work so I will keep it until something better surfaces.
Overall I am very surprised by the lack of quality options for what is an important requirement for business.
Guys, I would recommend you to take a look at aCar application... Starting from version 2.2.0 you're able to track your business (and non-business) mileages/trips as well as your fillups, services and other expenses of your vehicles.

My Garmin iQue still works, I've been using a program called Mileage for years. It's simple, as I make the same trips usually, there's a copy feature that copies over the destination and purpose, I fill in the beginning and ending mileage (IRS compliant). I really don't want it to use the GPS. Mileage is exportable to Excel format. I'm looking for something similar for Android. I've got aCar, it works but isn't quite as easy to use as Mileage.

I would like to know your exact and more in-depth opinion on aCar. How would you prefer it to be? Less features and options? Less complicated screens?

No offense, but I avoid apps that use spam to advertise. If you're topping 3 month old or more posts just to advertise your app, I personally consider you a spammer and will avoid your app for that reason alone.

You're missing out on a good app then, I like aCar. I only use it to track my fuel mielage though, not sure how it would work for you. Sounds like you want something that will use the GPS to track you from beginning to end. iMapMyRide will do exactly that. It's made more for joggers/bicyclist, that kind of thing, but it does what I think you want. Hit record ride and start, then go, and when you reach your destination, hit stop. And if you have your account all set up, you can upload the route to the website to view and share, and even update Facebook or Twitter if you want. AND it continues to record your track even when the phone is locked. I've used it on bicycle rides of over an hour with the screen off and the phone locked, and the route was perfect.
And no, I'm not a spammer, I have nothing to do with the app, I just like it. In fact, here's a route I recorded with my Droid X (hope this link works):
It may well be a good app, but I hate spammers. When someone comes in and finds three different threads that are long dead and tops all three of them just to advertise their app, then they're a spammer in my mind. If I use their app, I'm encouraging them to spam again in the future. I'm part of the problem IMO.

He's not a spammer in my book, he's a developer who is busy not visiting the site all the time, and has now posted in the appropriate forum (Android applications) about his program upon his return. I see no problem with it at all. He's been helpful in the past and will be so in the future. If you don't want to use his product then don't, but don't look to the rest of us to condemn him, isn't going to happen.
I'm the author of aCar app and I'm so sorry if my post looked like spam...
Because I'm mostly busy with the development and support of my app, I have less time to keep up with different forums on different websites. So once in while I visit here and response to the posts and my own thread. I have a thread right on this forum which I started it after I released 1.0.0 over one year ago... It's a good example. Just look at how I've posted my responses there. Nothing from me for a while, then bunch of replies all in one day and to the old posts I've missed. Here is the address: aCar - Track your vehicles
And again I would like to stress that I'm not a spammer nor I've ever liked to spam.
Regards,

I am using Mileage Tracker from Frank Android Software. It works perfect with my Droid. Easy to use and very helpful.
Thank you androidphone for your suggestion. Tried many mileage tracking application, only Mileage Tracker from Frank Android Software can compare with app I used on my blackberry phone.
I'm looking for a Mileage Tracker App, if anyone knows of one. I plan on driving from location to location frequently throughout my work day, and I'd like to be able to save time on keeping track of my mileage by having an app that does it for me.
What I'm looking for is to be able to get in my car, have the GPS on, open the app and press start.
From there, I want the GPS to track my location, just like it would do for navigation.
When I get to my destination, I want to be able press stop and have it tell me (and log on a daily, weekly, or monthly page) the mileage for each trip.
i.e.
11/20/10 3:35pm - 3:50pm 10.3 mi [View Map]
11/20/10 5:22pm - 5:45pm 24.6 mi [View Map] <--- Button to press to view map
I'd also like for it to record the path I took on a map (as seen above), so that I can easily identify where I am driving to and from, when trying to fill out a mileage sheet.
I've used the techniques as described on this site, using my Garmin GPS. I don't know if there's an Android app that will accomplish this, but I thought I'd post the link just in case you decide to go a different route ... no pun intended.
Nah, that is not really a tracker. Honestly it's just a template to track mileage in, which means I still have to keep track and type it in everytime I'm done.
I found this app called Cardiotrainer. There's a free and pro version. The free version isn't ad supported and is not a trial either, which is nice.
While technically this is an exercise type app, it does have the option for a workout, it's not like it matters, and it has an option to label it as "driving"
The gps has auto-stop and start it seems, but I haven't tested it out yet on the road.
Another thing it does is show the path on a map. And as for the start and stop simplicity, you just click on the app, click Start Workout, and click Start and go.
When you've stopped, hit pause (it's where the start button was).
You get the option to resume or end workout.
If you hit end, it asks if you're sure, and then ends it.
From there you can go to the top and press history and view that trip, other trips. It shows total mileage I believe by the month, and it shows time, miles, and mph for individual trips.
I can't seem to name the trip, but I can at least, for my own purposes track mileage and look on the map if I'm unsure where my start/end point were.

Does it work with the GPS/navigation to track automatically when you say "go"? Or is there manual input necessary? Been in biz 2 years and am terrible at logging miles. Need a super easy if not automatic way to do this!
It won't keep a log (not like you describe, anyway), but it'll def do a map/mileage. Maybe you could talk with the Dev about implementing some sort of a logging system in return for a to-be-determined numerical reimbursement (or maybe he'll do it for free :P lol).
