Default android apps need access to phone calls?

hello all, new to android.....3 days...

have been to the market and most apps need access to phone calls, why? will they use my minutes?

so far nervous to download anything, and advice would be appreciated

Most of them are just checking to see if you are on the phone.

Or if you get a phone call while using an app, it might need to pause, save data, etc.

I asked the author or WordWise about this. He says that as the free version of the app is ad supported, some of those ads might, if clicked, dial a number. IE..ad might be for a chatline at 1.50 per minute and clicking the ad could dial the number I guess. He said that the phone permission was for the adverts only.

That is complete bullshit. The method for incorporating ads have zero access to dialing your from your phone. Ads do nothing more than provide links to the browser.
