Just got my Intercept Saturday, tried ChompSMS and Handcent. I prefer Handcent. I'm on Sprint and had a slight issue with Picture Mail (not specific to Handcent but was able to resolve by reading the Handcent forum. :-) http://bbs.handcent.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2269&p=7198#p7198
Working great now.

Huh, might I ask why you went back to the stock app?
Well when I rooted my phone it basically wiped everything. I didn't restore my apps right away so I used the stock app for a while. I got accustomed to it and wound up never restoring Handcent. It's plain and doesn't have all the features and customization of Handcent but I'm doing fine without them
Used Handcent since I have had the phone but lately its been really acting up - missed messages, lag etc so I went back to SMS popup and things have been fine since..
I have would like to change the default SMS client on my Samsung Intercept. Curious what free SMS clients do you use?
Test drive, test drive, test drive. You can poll all you want and still not figure out what's best suited for you. Handcent and Chomp are both free. Even if an app isn't free you have 24 hours to return anything purchased via the Market. Figure out what you prefer. What's popular isn't always the same thing.
If you are going to poll people at least ask them why to see if their why's jive with your own. If someone likes one app because of a reason that doesn't matter to you then the suggestion is irrelevant.

I'm using the stock one now too. I used to have have both Handcent and ChompSMS but, like another user here, I found my way back to the stock app. I also use SMS Popup to compensate for what the stock app doesn't have. Works great for me.
Handcent! used Chomp for awhile but that has ADs who wants ADs on an SMS app??!! I would use stock and SMS Popup if there was another app for signatures since tmobile doesnt currently have the option to add signatures.

security for one. stock is way powerful than any 3rd party app. handscent and chomp both use system resources just for a pretty interface. not a good trade off. i'd go to iphone if i wanted a pretty interface but then i would'nt be a geek but a moron who wants the phone to be easy to use.
Handcent here. But I also freely admit that half the fun of any gadget for me is customizing the living fluff out of it. I also like that I can text more than one person at a time. I recently changed phone numbers and had to go through and send a text to every single contact individually by hand. (Maybe there's a way to do it in stock, but if there is, I couldn't find it... and if that's the case, making it that user-unfriendly doesn't appeal to me either.)
I used to be a die-hard Handcent user, however GO SMS has recently won me over. While it may not be as fully customizable as Handcent (yet), the built in themes (there are a few of them with variations) are simply beautiful, and the app as a whole operates better. And too, GO SMS only has a 2.1 Meg footprint on my device vs Handcent's 6.8 Meg footprint. I like too that they maintain communication with its users via a thread at XDA.

So far I have only used the custom client. I have heard a lot about handcent yet I am hesitant to try it out.
The main reason for this is that I have read that handcent exchanges all your information to third party companies for commercial reasons.
Another reason is that I heard you sometimes don't receive messages or very delayed. With a girlfriend that freaks out to the point she wants to break up if I don't respond in 10 minutes the results can be quite disastrous you see -.-
So I was wondering, do any of the alternatives (chompSMS, go SMS, etc) offer the same problems? If not, which don't?
I've used Hancent, Chomp and GO SMS. Out of these three, I have found that I am in love with GO SMS's design and functionality.
GO SMS is pretty new and definitely worth looking into. It has a pop up notification for SMS and MMS, but I disabled it because I like how "SMS Notifier" is. GO has four different theme settings: iPhone Theme, a "GO" theme, a Christmas theme and finally, a Dark theme. Within some of the themes, you can change to use a bubble or list style. For how new this Messaging app is, I'm very, very happy with it.
So, I like to use "GO SMS" for my messaging app and "SMS Notifier" for the notifications.
... I am hesitant to try [Handcent] out.

Yeah, I had a few problems with Handcent. I'm a senior in high school, and I don't get well reception as it is (in my school). I remember sending 20+ messages throughout the day, and never getting a reply back. Every text message I'd receive would be on a different subject. It was well after 6 PM that one of my friends asked "Where I was." I turned my phone off to see if that was the problem. After my phone booted up, ALL of the text messages I've sent throughout that day (I delete all my texts at the end of the day -- to keep snooping parents/friends from getting into things they don't need to know about) were sent out.
When this event happened, I was pretty disappointed in Handcent. I loved the all of the custom-ability I was given, but I cannot use a Messaging app where I can't depend on it to work 100% of the time. I, personally, would advise you to use GO SMS. But I'm only saying that because that's what I am currently using now.

I'm enjoying GO Sms too, it's responsive, lovely to look at, and I just prefer it over Handcent (I actually got rid of that one pretty quickly) or Chomp. YMMV.

I used Handcent for quite some time but recently figured out that it was causing some pretty bad slow downs on my Droid. I removed it and now my Droid functions properly again.
Just recently tried Go SMS. It is much faster and worth trying to see if you like it.

GO SMS for me.
I've tried Handcent and Chomp SMS; Handcent is not only way to invasive and confusing to configure, it also slowed my phone down and the interface was just way to "cluttered" looking. Chomp just didn't fit well for me. GO SMS is exactly what I was looking for. It's lightweight, easy to configure, and doesn't slow down my phone or drain my battery. I use the Simple Paper theme for it and it looks very nice.
hey guys, i just got an android phone and the sms is very annoying. i was wondering if there is a traditional sms app with just inbox, outbox, sent items etc or how to change the settings so i can have a basic inbox and outbox.
Are there any functional advantages to the apps over stock other than sending to multiple recipients or is it just looks?
There are. I have my phone's clock set five minutes fast, and this was a major problem for the stock SMS client as it would use the time stamp from my phone for messages I sent, but a time stamp from either the person responding or the carrier time stamp (I'm not sure which) which would result in my messages displaying out of order.
I tried Handcent, Chomp, and Go. Handcent was the only one to solve this problem.
Also there are other features such as customizable quick texts which are handy.
