Default Navigation and Voice apps that don't require a data plan?

Hi all.

New to the android platform (currently trying to choose between the Desire HD and Nexus s), so excuse my ignorance.

The thing that attracts me the most on the DHD is the offline maps, that seem to really act like a navigation system.(also the sound quality for music and htcsense.com but that's for a different thread...)

The thing that attracts me the most on the Nexus S is all the voice commands - speech to text on SMS, Email, search etc.(Also the camera, the screen and no 3rd party crap on it but that's for a different thread...)

I don't want to buy a data plan (I live in Canada), Wifi is enough for me.

My question is- are there offline maps apps, voice commands apps and translation apps that require NO internet connection what so ever ?
(just to download them of course...)

This will help me decide between the DHD and Nexus S, and will help me get to know the market a bit (a former iphone user).

Thanks !

CoPilot Live - North America - Android app on AppBrain Has offline maps, but it's a paid app. Not sure about any free ones.

You can use voice to text in any field that accepts text, just touch the microphone on the keyboard. As long as you have 2.2, you can get voice search (and all the accompanying commands) in the market. Should work on either phone.

Maybe the next iteration of the built in Google Maps & Navigation will meet your needs: Google Maps Mobile 5 will bring 3D buildings and offline support in a matter of days – Android and Me

For navigation it's easy: All apps with preloaded apps don't need a data connection for navigation. GPS is sufficient.
Best apps: Navigon, CoPilot
Free apps: HTC Locations

Thanks guys !

So the navigation on the Desire HD should not be a factor, ok.

Don't the google voice actions apps need an internet connection?

I read somewhere that the actual interpretation of the sound is happening on a remote server, that sends back the text to the mobile device (using the data connection...).

I wouldn't count on it based on what I've read unless you're into precaching (if that's actually supported).

If precaching will be supported in Google Mapps 5, can I use it for turn-by-turn navigation or only for routing?

EDIT: ... or will be precaching supported in Google Navigation 5?
