Why isn't there a screen cap app for unrooted phones?
And I'm not talking about one of those connect your phone to your computer types...I want one *on the go* for unrooted phones...I don't know the first thing about unrooting a phone and I've only had my Samsung Transform for a few months so I don't want to mess something up!
So why is this something that's not available? Help this newb out!
It's probably caused by Linux (kill me if I lie), you need acces to framebuffer to take screenshot and normal user don't have it. It's working when connected to computer using debugging mode, because ADB uses root access.

There is a home replacement app that allows screenshots. Home ++ I think. It's aggrevating because everyone says "you have to root to do it" when I know there is a home replacement that allows it without root.
However, with that said, I could not justify switching from LauncherPro home launcher for the ONE advantage Home ++ offered IMHO.
I have also rooted and have no issues with screen capturing anymore. Z4root has a one step root button, and a one step 'unroot' button to make it simple as cake.
Honestly, I rooted for 1 main reason, for wireless wifi. But screencapture was a nice side benefit.
z4root + screenshot = you're set.

Thank you so much for your response. One of the things I love so much about the internet is how total strangers will go out of their way to help you!
I found some stuff on z4root but I don't see my Samsung Transform listed as a compatible phone. Do you know if it would work on my phone?
I use Z4root, to temp root my Incredible. Most apps for root work with this root. Shoot me(screenshot app) works, Boot Control (reboot/power down app using only touch screen) works, Titanium backup works.

You can't UNroot your phone if it's not already rooted. And if it is already rooted, then any of the screen capture apps should work. I think what you want is to have someone *root* your phone, not *UNroot* it.

I read about z4root and it looks like something beyond what I'd feel comfortable doing on my own.

It is a One click root app. I was scared at first too. It also comes with a one click unroot. Couldn't be easier. Just don't delete anything that comes stock on the phone without doing a full backup first.

So it's an app? You just install it on your phone, press a button and that's it? I thought there was all kinds of stuff about downloading stuff on your computer, connecting your computer & phone, installing something on your phone after doing x, y & z and *then* one click to root.
And where can I find this app? I've searched the market and can't find it anywhere!

Not for Z4root. I found it, downloaded it, ran it. It works. It is on and off the market, so watch for it, or i think there might be a link to it at the XDA forums.

Don't be afraid to root. Most people root to install ROMs. I rooted a couple of months ago. I still haven't installed any ROMs, but I do use root for apps like drocap2, AdFree, and Wireless Tether.
And with apps like z4root out there, anyone can root. Really.

I posted a link to something like that earlier but when I thought I had to do all this crazy stuff I didn't bother looking into it. Looks like I have to register on their forum to get the file.
I still don't see Samsung Transform on the list of phones though...should I be concerned about that???

Some phones that will work is not on the list. if your not sur, z4root has 2 options.
temporary root, your phone will be rooted until the next time u restart your phone than it wont be rooted any more after restart) Should work on 99% of android phones.
Z4root is not available on the market any more. what u need to install it is go to the market and search for app installer, i have the one from funtrigger.
then to get z4root on ur phone , plug it in ur to pc, and move the z4root file on ur sd card. not in a folder.
then un hook the phone from ur computer, and run app installer, it will bring up a list scroll to the bottom and choose the z4root file, and install it.
then run z4root. you can always just use the temporary root to try it out, then if you like it do the pernament root.

Go back to the app and if it says temp root/ permanent root, it did not work. If it says re-root/ un-root, then it worked. If it didn't work, then do a reboot, and try it again. I had to try it a few times before it finally worked. Recheck what it says after each try. Should look like this when it works.

I'm so frustrated right now it's giving me a headache...can anyone install this from the link, read the instructions in the install guide and figure out what it means?
Once you install it you go to Options >> Install Guide

Ok...thanks...will try again...if I don't blow my brains out first....
Wow, i don't know then. Keep playing with it, or try a different screenshot app. Make sure you have root, too. If you reboot on temp root, it will lose root, and you will have to re-do it. Or un then re-install shootme.

I've tried 4 screenshot apps. It keeps telling me I have root and I haven't rebooted until now. Gonna try the permanent root and see what happens.
Thank you much for all of your help. I really can't believe there isn't something like this built into the phones already. If iPhone can do it I don't know why droid can't.
Just had a quick thought. Do you have Astro File MAnager ? If you do, you might look through it to see if your screenshots are there somewhere. Maybe under Shootme.

That's what I've been using to browse them. No luck.
I think it's becoming more clear that the issue is the Transform phone. It says on the screen that the phone is rooted but no screen cap apps work. I even tried one from GIK Soft called screenshot and the first thing that pops up when I open it is a dialog box that says, "only works with rooted phones"
I try to take a screenshot with it and get "pixel format error. only 16bpp or 32 bpp are supported"
*sigh*
Never thought I'd be jealous of an Apple product....
Odd, with that "screenshot" program I get that error message about 16bpp or 32bpp yet something still shows up in the "screenshot" folder...but when I open the image it's just a blank screen.
Camera setting maybe? Can bits per pixel be changed?
No luck. I give up for tonight. Looks like my only hope may be the one for unrooted phones that I linked to earlier in the thread...if I could just figure out what the hell else needs to be installed to make it work.
Thank you for all of your help...I do appreciate it.
