i have the music player widget on my one home screen, then i just hit the pause button. otherwise you can go to the pull down shade and reopen the music app, or hold the home button down to pull up your last used apps. to my knowledge i don't believe there is a dedicated "stop" button
Okay, this is a HUGE pain in my opinion. I get that you Linux peeps are all about this is not Windows O/S and you don't NEED to stop applications running in the background, however... MUSIC MAKES NOISE! If you need to kill that noise quickly, you need a STOP/END/EXIT button/function.
Also, what if you want to exit another app quickly, just by itself? Maybe you downloaded some forbidden app and the wifey is hovering nearby? Good grief, is it too much to ask for a simple button that STOPS/ENDS/EXITS the freaking app? Sigh.
This really needs to be in the next version. Believe it or not, sometimes I'm really done with an app until I want to use it again.
You can also create a shortcut on your homescreen to the 'running services' preference pane. Click that, then hit stop on music player service (or something of the sort). That will stop it.
Thanks, I have the running services shortcut as a workaround. Still too many keystrokes if you ask me, but at least I don't have to kill all my apps to kill one app...
Not really sure when the Music player decides to fire up, but it goes on when I don't want it on.
I put 4 mp3 files in the music directory.
They played fine, but I press the pause button and the play timer blinks as though it's waiting to be restarted.
When I get into my car and the bluetooth(which is always on), connects to my car, I often hear an mp3 file playing, but not always.
There are no items in my playlist.
I installed AppKiller a day ago, but the music player still started up once.
I don't go to the music player. It just starts.
My best idea is to remove the mp3 files and not use the music player.
I'll move it to my home screen to get quicker on the draw, but it is a problem when it starts up as I make a call.
Any other good ideas?
writhum - I'm interested in your experiences with other players, too.
And I definitely put my vote in for a Stop button.
It's absurd that there's no stop or exit button. Songs continue for me even when not in playlist. Stopping in running apps gives a msg that it may not be good for player to stop app. Anyone find a better music player and can this default one be uninstalled?
one of the major flaws in android software is the lack of a CLOSE APPLICATIONS button. whether it effects performance or not its a pain to have all that crap running all the time. when I'm in a hurry I don't want to have to choose between a million running apps.
I have found if you want to kill stuff all together just get an application killer. I am using advanced app killer (free) I can select certain apps to kill and just set the widget on the home page and it will just kill whatever I have checked. In my case I just kill everything. Kills/shutsdown everything from music, navigation, skype and everything else. Works well for me.
Mine will let me exit out of the music player when playing, go to hardware buttons at bottom. the first is return I do not know what the second is to do but it does stop media player by exiting it, touch it and hit exit player on screen.

Pause works just fine for me. Im not getting this. Pause=stop. I use mine every day never had a problem with the pause/stop button.
Is it that people don't realize that pause is stop or is something else going on.
OK after reading what I said it might look like I'm being a smarta$$ but I'm not. I am seriously just trying to understand exactly what the problem is so I can try to find a solution. If someone could explain why pause isn't working I'd love to know what it is thats happening.

I'm curious if you notice a difference when you close the apps vs letting the phone do it's thing. I understand for many it drives them crazy that apps are running that they don't want to run. Its been debated over and over again. I found that the proof is in the pudding. You should do some tests to see if the phone does what it is supposed to do and try leaving it alone for a while. I would hate to see you spend all this time trying to find ways to close these apps only to find out that the performance of your phone isn't affected by it. I'm not going to argue one way or another, but I would try both ways several times to accurately test it out. When I was on 2.0, my own testing proved that an app killer was beneficial. Now that I am on 2.2, I find that it is NOT.
well on my droid if I let it do its thing ,it just came on by it self I plugged in the head phones and the mp3 was playing. I wanted to play a game and the mp3 kept starting over an over after i put it on pause. till i found out that if u do what i did above it will turn it off. of course it was today before i found it out.

Wow thats interesting! I tried it and couldnt get it to work...
I've noticed that on my Droid, the music app starts playing when I disconnect my headphones. The music apps starts even if it wasn't open before disconnecting the headphones.
I've been reading this thread and have the same problem. Using the EVO 4G with Android 2.2.
There is no way to turn off the music app, or uninstall it. I can only pause the song. It's particularly annoying with bluetooth in my car where the default is for this app to play. A phone call interrupts it. If I want to use Pandora I have to manually pause the music app or both will play at the same time.
Advanced App Killler does NOT stop the music app. Actually it hardly kills any apps, except for a minute or less, after which most of them reappear.
I completely agree with comments here that android developers need to add a button or setting to stop an app, as well as to prevent it from loading in the first place if desired by the user.
BTW several other apps display the same behavior, but are not as annoying because I can't hear them.
The music app on my moto droid also starts playing random mp3's when:
1. I place the droid in my car dock and connect an aux cable
2. I connect to my planetronics bluetooth headset
3. When I disconnect the headphones or aux cable and plug it back in (this usually happens while I'm doing yard work and the cable gets caught on something).
There may be other occasions when this happens but I haven't been paying close attention to what I was doing at the time.
The music player will start playing at the same time I'm listening to Listen, Pandora, Last FM, etc...
This is a real pita... does anyone know what is causing this or how to fix?
Since the Verizon OTA upgrade to Froyo / 2.2 the problem is not as pronounced but it still occurs occasionally. It seems to occur when I have the headphones plugged into the phone and I connect the USB cable to charge the phone. I noticed it once after disconnecting and reconnecting the USB power cable but not when connecting to my computer via USB. It's still a pain that the OS insists that I want to hear the Music player and not something else of my own choosing...

LOL, happened to me for the first time today. Was listening to Pandora, went into a tunnel and suddenly the music on my card starts playing . Well that was nice but it wasn't playing (visually) in the stock player, or Mixzing, or Pandora. Didn't think about the notification shade and I was driving but was like WTF? Had phone almost 3 months and it's the first time it went Cylon on me. LOL it was playing a nice mix though.

I just purchased a Motorola T505 bluetooth FM transmitter for the car and if I am listening to music from the phone through the transmitter and then leave the car, when I come back to the car I have to shut the phone down, re-pair to the T505 and then start the music player app back up. The only solution that I have found is to kill the task before leaving the car. Backing out does NOT exit the music player. It is still running in the background paused. Need to be able to exit!!! Anyone find a music player that has an actual exit button? That is what the problem is plus more I'm sure (battery life, other bluetooth devices, etc). Going to give MortPlayer a try.

I found that if I keep my music on an external SD card I can just pop it out and the music stops. Might be a No NO.. But it works for me.
that is a no no. One of these days you will lose EVERYTHING on your card. When the phone is reading or writing to the card, and you pull it out, you will ruin the card.

Pause is just that, Pause. It doesn't stop the music from playing again when the device is disconnected and reconnected. We are sick of the music app starting on its own, at random. It's annoying, at the very least, and downright embarrassing on many occasions. I have many albums on my SD card, but only wish to listen to them when I choose to, not each and every time my phone connects to my car's Bluetooth connection.

Your right, there is no stop button, Only a pause button. so aggravating. I hope clearing the playlist stops this.. Stupid thing keeps playing even after I press pause!
You can 'stop' the player by clearing the playlist. Go to the playback screen, tap the playlist button, and press menu the clear playlist.
OMG.. My android is POSSESSED!! I cleared the playlist and deleted all of my playlist I created.. the stupid thing just started playing from the library... I pressed pause.. I exited the app and went on do doing something else.. Is it because I keep my earplugs in my ear and plugged into the phone? I really wish i could resolve this issue..
I have the same problem with my LG Optimus V, on my way to class at school, I like to listen to my music, but once I get to class I need to stop it quickly. When I first got my android I thought that "pause" was going to be the same as "Stop". Little did I know...While I was in math class an Avril Lavigne song started blasting, as well as in spanish class the next day..
The only way I can stop it from coming back on within the hour, is to shut the phone off and then turn it back on, everytime im done listening to music. After turning it back on, it won't randomly play until I've played at least one song.
If you don't use it, it won't randomly play. But when you do, you have to shut it off, and then turn it back on to stop it from randomly playing once your done. I know, it's a major pain, but it works.

Folks, install MortPlayer and set it as your default music player (Menu, Preferences, Headset, Use as default player). This will prevent Android OS from starting up the stock player.

Yeah, I agree. I'm trying out some 3rd party music players, I'll let you know if any make things easier.
After trying many, for sound quality and UI, I found that PlayerPro actually has a quit button accessed by the menu key and it really quits!
But, then I found Neutron Music Player and felt the sound was greatly superior (nothing wrong with PlayerPro but....) and I'm back looking for ways to turn off Neutron and Pandora, each of which continue to use 5% of my battery for many hours and I don't know why.
