I have taken liberty to hijack this thread. This is a summary of why when LP expired and why you were unable to use your phone and were only able to use the browser. Issues came up since people did not have internet access and were not able to update the app.

Please note that the expiration on LP was removed on the latest release in December. There are some Custom ROMs that use the older LP version and this might be one reason why members are seeing this. Technically if you have the latest version of LP you should not see this. This is only for LP and not customers who purchased LP+.

This thread is meant to be for support for those with this issue. If you want to discuss how Fede should have done this or any other kind of debate, please post here. I will have this thread cleaned so it's not so clutter

Solution and explanation from Fede

Quote:
As for the expiration problem, that's partly an oversight on my part. See, the expiration comes from the beta days of LauncherPro, where I had that in place to keep people from using stalled/unsupported versions of LP. The intention was never to "take over" the phone, when LauncherPro starts, it checks for expiration, and if it's past the expiration it will close itself and send the user to my website to download the latest version.
That's where my mistake was, because I didn't realize that if the user has LauncherPro set as the default launcher, after closing itself, it will try to open again, creating a "loop" of closing and opening again.
I should note that the expiration was already removed in the latest version available (0.8.2), so the problem is only affecting users with older versions of LP. Expiration is gone for good so this will never happen again.

Default Launcher Pro broke my phone....

I tried to download the new version of launcher pro as it said I had to, no way around it. I download and try to install but I need to turn on installing outside apps, so I do that, but now I can not get to anywhere to install the app now, and going to launcherpro.com on my phone only brings up 403 forbidden and some ghost gator hosting splash screen....

What gives, what do I do now? I can not get to my settings or anything even. I can't even change from using launcher pro???
I can't even leave a comment on his site or find an email because everything just 403 errors on me.

Launcher pro is free. If your pro plus account expired, I was unaware it could expire, I would contact the Dev.

There are a couple of things you can do (although I'm wondering why the plus version "expired" if that's what you have).

In the application manager you can uninstall LP then reboot (sometimes just going to the home screen) to be given the choice as to your launcher; ADW and TWZ will likely be there in the pop up prompt.

Another way is to just go into task manager and remove LP with the same result.

I am in the same situation.
I can't even get to the home page. I can't make a phone call. On the phone, HostGator keeps showing up. Called them. They say they don't know anything about Launcherpro.
The phone is useless

Default [APP help] Launcher pro expired and will not download update

Alright. My buddy at work let his launcher pro expire so now his phone will do pretty much nothing. When trying to get to the launcher pro website it keeps sending me to a "host gator.com" or something like that. Is there anywhere else i can download the update or hook it to the pc and do so. thanks

It said launcherpro, but the link goes to HostGator. com

Called HostGator and they say it is not their end. More likely launcherpro who may not even be a customer.

That issue was reported across many devices back in October, and with no resolution (that I could find) other than uninstalling it and going with ADW or some other launcher.

Later on it seems to have resolved, at least we stopped seeing "expired" reports in the forums.

A guy here at work is having the same issue. When he hits the home button it tells him that Launcher Pro has expired and to download the newest version. No matter what he does it won't come off of the browser page. Can't go to settings or anything. Like above, the phone is useless. Can't make calls or even receive calls.

Default My solution

Here is the solution for those who still have problems :

On your android phone : launch the Internet browser (I am using Dolphin Browser). Actually it's the only thing you can do... In the settings of the browser you may be able to change the "User Agent" ("Android" by default) and select "Desktop" (or everything else) instead of "Android".

Now try to go on launcherpro.com : it must work.

LauncherPro can't get expired. The license is permanent. Once you purchase it, it's yours forever. There's no trial period either. If you don't have the license, you just don't have access to the Launcherpro widgets and some other functions.

So the question is - What on earth did you install on your phone?

We're seeing a rash of these reports, across many devices, lately (especially last night and this morning).

I'm wondering what's up. I've been searching Google, so far with no resolutions.. a few months ago this was happening with a beta version, but these reports are not about a beta, it seems.

Tried the fix above....did not find anything related to "user agent." Can't access my home screen, the launcher pro site is dead on my phone, and can basically only text or receive calls. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Are you going to the Android Market to download this? If so, you don't need to turn on "outside apps".

I had the same issue, and ended up downloading it directly from here: http://www.launcherpro.com/apk/LauncherPro-0.8.2.apk

Once it downloaded, I could install it from the pull-down notifications bar on my Droid 2.

In my case, I had my phone set to not allow installation of apps from sources other than the android market, so I was (luckily) bumped to "settings", which i was unable to access before. I uninstalled the old version of launcher pro, enabled installation of apps not from the market, and reinstalled the new version of launcher pro. I had to reorganize the icon layout on my home screens, but my phone otherwise works fine now. So it was a little clumsy, but worth it.

This is BS! I loved how my evo was set up, now i'm back to the htc sense screen and have no idea where all my crap went, nor where to find it! Does anyone know how to download something off your sd card? I see the launcher pro zip file on it, but it has a question mark next to it.

Try this :
Launch the default browser and type "about:debug" in the search box. Then in the settings, at the end you should have "UAString". There you can choose "Desktop". Now retry to go on launcherpro.com.

Now the website is reachable, but still not the forums. More to the point, what have people done to make this happen to their installation of LauncherPro - because I'm having no issues at all.

I have not been able to ferret out an answer to that. I've been all over the various forums looking for something about it, and all that comes up is 90% beta expiration reports (mostly last Fall) and about 10% this same issue.

I have been using LP Plus since it came out with zero issues.

Did you uninstall the app? I'm guessing that the LP forum does not work for you? Maybe clear your browser's history/cache/download if possible.

OK, you guys totally have me worried now. I am running LP, but have yet to see any expiration notices. Should I expect something catastrophic soon?

If my LP stops, can I get back to sense by clearing the defaults:

Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> LauncherPro -> Clear Defaults?

Does the Menu button not work when LP expires?

You could try pushing another launcher onto the phone to see if you can get the Select Default pop-up.

From my understanding of the problem this is caused by a very old version of launcher pro that's shipped with certain custom roms against Fede's wishes. I think the problem is he can't really do a lot about people sharing the version he had the expiry code in. I'm not sure but I don't think it's still in the latest version. Still I'm not sure about any of this it's just the impression I get from the Launcher Pro forums.

My wifes phone did this same thing this morning. Sounds like if you weren't updating the Launcherpro app this is what happens. I'm not too impressed...

A work around to make your phone useful again is use your search button. Search for settings and from there open the settings application and uninstall launcherpro.

What gives, what do I do now? I can not get to my settings or anything even. I can't even change from using launcher pro???
I can't even leave a comment on his site or find an email because everything just 403 errors on me.
This sounds suspicious.. LauncherPro is freely available on the Google Market and should NOT require the "Unknown Sources" flag in applications. Sounds to me you have a cracked or warez version from an unknown source. Beware.

Speaking of Default Select pop-up, any idea how to get it to come back after picking a default launcher so you can choose which launcher to use again?

That's a great tip in this mess.. good on ya to discover and share it (and a great first post for a new member ).

I'll remember it and post it to others with the issue.

This is happening to me as well. Here's the problem re-phrased:
. LauncherPro is the designated Home application
. LauncherPro has decided that it has expired and every time the Home screen is attempted to be accessed, it instead launches the browser with the launcher pro web site
. The LauncherPro website has been taken down by its hosting company

So, i can't get to the home screen, to run Home Switcher, to specify a different Home App, and I can't get to the home screen to run the App Market, and the idiot's website is down.

--Update--
It appears that the home page of his website is up, his forums are down. I might be able to install the apk (... and since i can't get to the Home screen, i can't get to my settings to turn on WiFi -- stuck with 2-bar Edge.. ). I realize this is free software, so who am i to complain... but this guy just rocketed past Pol Pot on the list of worst humans ever.
