Notsure Google's new "conversation" mode in Google Translate. PROBLEM.

Hi guys and girls.

Just a wee problem I've encountered with the new conversation mode on google's translate program.
The idea of it (if you didn't already know) is that you can have a real time conversation with a foreign language speaker by using the google translate program to record speech and translate it into another language. The device will then "speak" the translation. For example I can be in a restaurant and order my meal in English, by speaking to the device, and it will translate into German and speak it. The waiter will then speak in German and the device will reply back to me in English, etc. etc.
All sounds good. It's a great tool and seen as I'm interested in languages (quite affluent in French), it jumped out at me as a must have.

For the program to work you must have voice input installed to the device. Google translate refers the user to eSpeak TTS which I subsequently went and downloaded and installed.
On the download site for the app, the instructions are clearly laid out for how to correctly set the settings for it to work with google translate's conversation mode. However, having correctly set it up (and after uninstalling and reinstalling the app), I keep getting the same error message on google translate. "VOICE INPUT NOT SUPPORTED". Every time....... Now, I'm not in a particular hurry. The conversation mode currently only supports Spanish - English and seen as I'm not planning on going to Spain any time soon, it's not a problem, however you can understand that google are working on other languages such as German, French, Italian (and I suspect Russian and Chinese), and there is every chance that I may need the first 2 mentioned this year.... Could anyone give me any clue as to what I may need to do to make this work properly? I'm using android 2.1 so it should be no problem.

Cheers guys, this is my first query on the forums.

Harry

After you download espeak go to settings>Voice input & output (or where ever your texts to speech settings are) click the box to enable the espeak engine (much like you have to do for newly installed keyboards) then choose to use it as your default engine.

Try that out.

Cheers but I'd already done that. The instructions which tell us how to set it up correctly tell me to do that.

Install Voice Actions from the market and then restart your phone.
