What is the best GPS tracking app if my Droid is lost or stolen?

I dunno if it's the best, but 'MyLookOut', the free version, does it for me. You can check where your phone is on a streetmap on their website, behind your password, with GPS. Convenient. Especially if someone stole it! But if you just lost it you can make it 'scream' loudly so you can find it at its GPS location.

It's in the market.

As always: qualify exactly what you mean by "best". The word is highly subjective and meaningless without context.

i use wheres my droid. but in a different way than usual.

with these types of apps, you have to have gps constantly on. which isnt ideal for battery power.

the way it works:
you set up a code word for WMD to respond to when you text your phone, like "locate" for example. then WMD will grab the location of your phone using gps and text the location back to the phone that you texted from.

because i dont want gps activated all the time, i use tasker to automatically turn on gps whenever i get a text with the same code word i.e. "locate". i also have tasker turn gps off after 2 minutes.

so once my phone recieves a text with "locate" tasker will turn on gps, WMD will grab my phones location, text it back to me, and tasker will turn my gps off again.

the reason i dont just use tasker to do the whole thing for me is that you need to use the internet on your lost phone to be able to locate it (google maps) and i dont have any sort of data plan to do so.

hope this helps.

Seek Droid works very well and has been around a while. I think I paid about $2 for the full version from the android market. Worth every penny. From a pc you log onto their site and then you can do several things regarding your phone.

1. Make it ring even if ringer is muted, (to find the phone under that couch cushion).

2. Initiate GPS tracking. Even if wifi and gps are turned off, the app turns them on and tracks the phone for 5 minutes showing the location on a map.

3. You can see a list of the last 10 calls.

4. You can remotely lock the phone with a 4 digit code. This happens immediately on the phone, and makes it useless to anyone without the code.

5. You can remotely wipe the phone and even wipe the SD card if you choose.

This is one of the few apps I highly recommend to people. A lifesaver if your phone is lost or stolen.

I use two different apps, Where's My Droid (free), and LookOut (free & premium).

Where's My Droid lets you:
1) Send a secret text message to the lost phone. It turns on the GPS of the missing phone and texts back its coordinates with Google Maps link.
2) Send a secret text message to the lost phone that causes it to turn up the volume and ring loudly.

The free version of Lookout serves as anti-virus software (which is the main reason that I use it), but also lets you track your phone on a map (or blare a siren sound) by logging into Lookout's website. The premium version also lets you remotely lock your phone and wipe the data.
