Have you looked at Business Calendar? I just checked out the screen for adding events and it would seem to do what you want. Though I'm not "you" so it may not be exactly what you want. The widgets "may" be a little lacking but it has plenty to choose from.

From the market (I'm just using the free version at the moment).

Yeah, I have thee free version too. But I want the quick add of just typing a line of text (which I have, but lacking the option to span days or set reminders), not just a better version of the default add event page (although I have to admit it is an improvement).

Business Calendar has some nice options, but I do not like the week view, I much prefer the "2 page a week" diary style view of Calendar Pad over the vertical timetable style view that BC provides. As for the widgets, the 4x1 Agenda view does not seem to show dates, and the 4x4 Agenda view puts the dates above the content rather than next to them, like Smooth Calendar.

I know I am being really fussy here, but I know what I want. It is just possible one (or several together) of the paid apps may suit my needs, but I am not willing to pay out just to find out it doesn't.

Drop the developer a line and suggest what you want. You never know, it could be simple and quick job to add it in.

Default Ahhhhhh

I am used to my blackberry and making the switch is painful. I just want a calendar app that will take over my screen and remind me of what I put on there. Is this to much to ask. Blackberry did it perfectly and Im starting to think that this phone is more show then go. For the love of Android. Help

I find a combination of Smooth Calendar on the home screen and the full screen calendar widget on the adjacent screen gives thois functionality.

Thumbs up Jorte

I've said it before and I'll say it again. 'Jorte' gives me everything I need and will display your calendars exactly how you want them and it's free. So try it, if you don't like it, I'll be surprised, but you'll have lost nothing.

I first used the stock calendar for like 2 months. I switched to Pure Grid Calendar which was awesome, but after about another 2 months I got bored with it. I looked around and found Jorte and I've been using it ever since.

Jorte comes closest of all the calendar apps to being flawless. I can't see myself ever changing again. I love it.

Confused

I've given so many of these the old college try over the last few months, was sorta satisfied with Jorte, but thought it's settings were unnecessarily complicated and it's appearance sorta juvenile. (Don't worry; discovered that could be a plus!) Right now, I'm back to Jorte for it's ability to customize calendars that fit my dInc screen and remain legible.

Main importance:
  • Google calendar integration (the easier the better)
  • ability to quickly view schedule and add appts (DUH! LOL!)
  • super android integration (so I can tap Contact's name and get Navigator directions)
  • ability to add notes, tasks, &c, and
  • a professional look.
I've only been using Android since Jan, but I can't tell you how many times I've held up people while trying to enter an appointment; it's embarrassing. I've even borrowed a scrap of paper to write the appt down and enter it later (and that calendar app got deleted later). I really think I've tried them all (well, the 'serious' ones); I'm not a calendar app junkie, just want something that works, right?!

Business Calendar Pro: it's got to be the most handsome calendar out there! LOVE IT! Bought it! ...then realized it didn't have a task list Removed (though it's still installed), but for anyone that wouldn't need a task list, it's the $hit! Best widget out there, period (for adding events esp!) You're not embarrassed to let people see this calendar; it could SELL Droids!

CalenGoo: the huge fan base impressed me enough to finally buy before I tried. After an hour, I tried to undo the purchase. (Couldn't.) —I'm in the process of making a few suggestions to the developer that, who knows, might resolve my issues:

1. on-the-go syncing just didn't work well. FWIW, I opened BCP and Jorte to see if I could make changes in Desktop Google and have them show up in the phone apps immediately, and they did, so it's not the phone/OS. Back in Calengoo, I set the auto-sync to 1 mt instead of 1 hr, and I also tried "sync" (sync now, I suppose), but the calendar still didn't update. Maybe a reinstall would help? *shrug* (I have Froyo). Or RTFM, I know!

2. ZOOM? My eyes may need a checkup admittedly, but where's the zoom feature? (I've seen it mentioned; I just can't FIND it!). The week view is okay, but not in "column" mode (my favorite view). After a lot of dickering with column mode, I got it how I liked it, but I simply couldn't SEE the entries. A zoom would definitely help.

OR, having a 4-day view option would solve the issue just fine. This is the main reason I'm back to Jorte: I can get the 4-day column view, and zoom all over the place. But I think a 4-day column view (or at least the ability to chop off the weekends in weekly view) would be nice. That's going to be my first suggestion. (And a plea for help with the syncing, of course; I'm sure I just don't have a setting right.)

Of course, I bought these apps (well, Jorte's free), so I'm not deleting them; just not using them until some changes might get made in the future. If BCP had tasks, I'd be all over that one! Calengoo looks nice, but I can't see the tasks to find free time to make appointments! ...But at least the tasks are nice — better than Jorte's, except I wish Calengoo Tasks had an "Important" checkbox for tasks like Jorte.

Really, all three are great; Jorte's just the best for me right now.

Is there a calendar program that has a custom repeat? I'd like being able to add an event that repeats once every two weeks.

I think that I have tried 3 calendars besides stock. I have finally decided that I really like stock the best. Strange that I did not realize that at the beginning...

Well, OK, I guess I will try Jorte. Thanks!

Hi Tracey

You seemed to have done a whirlwind tour of the calendars and tasks. Personaly as you, I've settled with Jorte, but only for Calendar. Check out Google Tasks Organiser. Give it a few days. It is a definate upgrade on any other task app that I've found. You can also nest tasks within other tasks. I've got an Jorte Agenda Widget x2 height and a Google Tasks Organiser widget x3 height on my main homescreen. Just tapping either takes you into their respective main apps to create new events or tasks or to amend existing entries.

For me I need a powerfull calendar *AND* task manager, these two are a perfect combination. Incidentally, you can also scroll your tasks on the widget.

I can do that with Pimlical/A. Not the prettiest interface, but highly customizable - with an albeit steep learning curve.

Calengoo, whenever you add any task, you get endless options: a number drop-down (any number), and a period drop-down (day, week, month, year). So you can put in every "2" "weeks" (or every 3 weeks, every 40 days, every 21 weeks, every 2 months, etc). Really brilliant!

Most other apps I've used (like most recently Business Calendar and Jorte) just use the stock calendar dialog's repetition. (But Calengoo is $6 sight unseen, no trial period.)

Calengoo has a scrollable widget for tasks (with indents, etc), too, although it's only one size (2x2). I considered using that task widget with the extraordinary Business Calendar widget (in which you can add events without opening the app!), but ultimately I just wanted the tasks integrated with the calendar (like on Google's webpage). Jorte does that, though it doesn't give you the exceptional control over the tasks (like different lists and indents).

Strangely enough, Calengoo doesn't have a calendar widget that adds tasks. Only Jorte (the freebie) has widgets that show a calendar + tasks.

(Again, the Jorte task manager is very basic, like Google's website; Calengoo's and Google Tasks Organizer have superior handling of tasks.)

I was using Jorte before, but the task management left a lot to desire for.
Currently using Business Calendar together with GTasks. Both have good widgets and do what they are supposed to do in a very good way: calendar + Tasks + sync.

I have been using Pocket Informant for about a month now after seeing it listed in this post. It seems to work very well as a complement to my phones calendar.

Good luck

Really? Now that is cool! (Ya'll are going to sell me on GTasks darnit!)

Update on Calengoo: I wrote on the android.calengoo.com website's "Feedback" that I'd like a 4-day view, and the developer was nice enough to respond (like, within hours!) how I could get a 5-day view, which made the weekly view usable. Yay!

HOWEVER, I must rant a bit: if you go to the "Feedback" and see ALL the requests there, you realize that certain requests (like "Zoom") aren't ever going to be implemented. There are over 200 requests, and you have to get yours VOTED UP to even get a possibility of changing something.

AND, my biggest complaint (although this holds true for many calendars) is that the settings are CRAP. In Calengoo, to get to the 5-day setting, you have to go to the "Landscape" view settings instead of the "Weekly" view settings. Which isn't even a little bit obvious. And there are still settings that I don't even know what they do. Some don't seem to work at all (like "single tap to go to day view" has never worked for me!), but you learn that to make it work, you have to find some other oddball setting and turn it on... very frustrating. Terrible documentation, esp for a paid app.

The Calengoo UI is great, but the Settings menus are spaghetti. (Jorte was like that too, but not as bad as Calengoo's settings.)

XOXO

Yes, the menu of settings can be hard to navigate. but I think that the combination of a complicated set of settings, and a very responsive developer, is better than an easy but thin menu of settings.

By the way, there's a chart of calendar features at Calendar applications - Android Wiki. A little out of date but maybe we can update it together.

I currently use Smooth Calendar on my home screen (pretty widget), and Astrid Tasks widget synced with google tasks on another screen, mostly using google tasks as my todo list.

Ah, sorry I wasn't as specific as I meant to be.

I use Outlook at home, and would like to have my tasks sync to my phone (I think I've got that part covered) including alarm settings (this is the part that's not covered right now).

Will GTasks or PI be able to pick up whatever alarm setting I've established in Outlook?

Having a list all by itself isn't particularly effective for me; the reminders are very helpful. I'd also like support for recurring tasks. So I can set up a recurring task with a reminder in Outlook, have my phone remind me of it, check off the item on my phone (or in Outlook) and have both get updated accordingly.

This is one aspect where thus far Windows phones really seem to have trumped Android.

So I just tried Gemini Calendar as well (thanks tcat) and it looks nice, but the dealbreaker for me is that addresses within an event aren't clickable at all (only the zip code is, which takes you to the dialer, oddly enough). I rely on this to get where I'm going, so it's back to my beloved Touch Calendar for me.

I've changed my setup... Now using the Agenda widget (not Android Agenda Widget) on my homescreen: 4x1 widget showing 1 upcoming event at a time. And I have GTasks by Dato for my google tasks on another screen. Set up my windows laptop with rainlendar and now syncing on both.

I don't use that feature, but I think it's "supposed" to work. From the developer: "Option "Map address as link" is supposed to linkify the human readable address. It is a function served by the Google library, I just pass the string to this library. I do not know, why it does not work sometimes, I will investigate this problem."
I guess it's a fairly new app. Yeah, took me to the dialer too.... guess you got to call the zip code to see where it's at.

Question

I'm just migrating from Palm tx to android and have been looking at calendar options. I've never used google calendar and have some privacy issues with client appointments I keep on my personal calendar, so I have to figure that out. Also, if I must use google calendar, I might as well sync with my husband, who does use it, but need to keep the appointments private- I assume there's a way to do this. I really like the palm datebook and also used ScheduleUs before it went under. I found an app called CalendarScope which seems to sync with google to get to the android phones, and it seems to have a lot of what I've liked in the past, but I emailed them asking about tasks integrated with calendar, it wasn't clear. Does anyone have any experience with CalendarScope or ideas about my other issues? I like to have my calendar events in color-organized categories, as I have events that belong to each of my kids, my professional practice, various personal things, and my husband to keep track of.

Just purchased my first smart phone and relegated my sadly less than fully functional "Palm Zire 31" to the antique cabinet...

I have apparently been spoiled rotten from over a decade using palm devices... the BUILT in standalone calendar/task system which had sync enough available for every situation I have ever encountered without reliance on putting sensitive data where I have no control over it (something that would get me in huge trouble).

To that end is there anywhere a fully standalone, self contained, preferable keeping data on my SD card where I can access it (bonus if it is encrypted sqlite database because that is where my needs will be by the first of August) calendar app which can have the online cloud etc. removed or suitably disabled.

I need a reasonably sized note to be attached to most events (this is the sensitive bit that will cause problems being on someone else's server) as well, and so far I keep looking at the palm sitting discharged on my desk and trying to figure out a way resurrect it for less than the cost of a US bank bail out.

I need dates as far back as 1900 and as far forward as I can go with repeating capability (especially for the past events, many times this event will be entered from where it started and set to repeat until the end of time on the Palm system).

Linking an event to a contact (such as many third party apps on the Palm do with ease) is not a need but would sure make life easier.

Most of the other people I exchange events with are firmly stuck in the paper and pencil method when the palm option goes away and I refuse to do that unless absolutely necessary.

{rant}
I thought that as technology marched forward we would see improvements, why then is the calendar and contact system on Android going back way before the first Palm Pilot actually made it into common public hands.

This is my only complaint so far.
{/rant}

DejaOffice +50 discovered moments ago.

PRO:
1) standalone or sync locally or sync remotely.
2) notes on events (no idea how large the note can be).
3) contacts on events.
4) repeating events.
5) easily entered dates.
6) private (not synced) records.
7) all in one notepad, task manager, calendar, contact manager (on steroids), etc.

CON:
1) not enough years forward or back (especially back).
2) no math on years like datebook has (have not seen that anywhere but datebook. enter a year in the title and when clicked it tells you how many years have elapsed).
3) export must be done manually by a root user copying the database.
4) no direct entry but since the years are limited anyway the pull down system works fine.

Going to try the pimlical (datebook) for Android in the hopes that it IS datebook as soon as I get the chance. Going out on a limb and from past history I would suspect it is awesome.

It is good, Will, but not quite there yet. What is needed is its own database, once we've got that it'll be everything you want.

I am moving away from palm for the first time and am realizing the transition will be painful. I was used to having outlook calendar, contacts, tasks, and memos sync with my palm.

I do NOT need google sync. So far I don't use google for anything and don't have a google account. I'll be using this solution to sync my outlook calendar and contacts with android: http://androidforums.com/android-applications/337012-we-can-now-synchronize-outlook-android-without-3rd-party-app-exchange-server.html

I've taken the palm interface for granted, but here are some features that I know that I will need:

- a widget (I guess that's the lingo) that shows my day's calendar and tasks. Perhaps this could be accomplished my having two separate widgets, I don't know.
- very easy to pick a date and schedule a mtg
- views that make it easy to see daily agenda, weekly, and monthly
- can set appts to reoccur twice a week, weekly for a set period, etc.
- I am used to being able to set a 15 min alarm on palm that will go off repeatedly until I turn it off
- I don't know enough to even know what I want in terms of synching. Since I'm synching hotmail with the android calendar, I think any of the calendars should be options for me??

I'd love to be able to sync with my outlook tasks somehow.

I've really liked the sound of Business Calendar. Does anyone have suggestions for how I can use that and have a screen that shows my day's calendar combined with some other widget for tasks? Calendar and tasks are my main uses for the phone day to day.

Thanks for any advice!

To me, that's the reason for Calengoo over Business Calendar. You get a calendar based date picker, like in Palm, whereas BC has the stock scroll-wheel based date picker.

As for syncing, I thought I'd stay away from from Google and use MyPhoneExplorer, but ended up deciding I liked Google. But you can learn about all the options at syncdroid.net.

I'm still trying to figure this out. I want palm-like calendar function. I am not using google calendar, so I'm not sure what my options are. I just downloaded Jorte, but I don't think it can work for my set-up.

I am using Outlook calendar linked to a hotmail exchange account that is synched with my android phone calendar. What calendar options do I have on the phone? I think Jorte requires google calendar.

If a calendar app says that it will sync with android calendar (as opposed to google calendar), will it work for me? If so I think options are Calengoo and Pocket Informant. (Will not work: Jorte, Business Calendar)

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

On exchange syncing: One option is Touchdown, which syncs directly with exchange, and has email, notes, the whole suite.

The other option is to set up the phone to sync the native calendar through exchange and then use your choice of calendar programs. For example, here is Calengoo's page on how to do that.

Thanks for the reply. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this. I'm not sure whether Touchdown would work for me. I'm just using a hotmail account to sync my calendar and contacts from my Outlook to my android (tasks and notes cannot be synced to android using this strategy).

It seems like Calengoo could work, but I can't tell for sure. My goal is just to have a calendar that will be able to access the info I've synced to android using hotmail. I didn't see an option for a free trial from Calengoo.

Any other advice?

I'm hoping some other people will chime in but while we wait for them, I will suggest that you could e-mail the calengoo developer--he's very friendly and helpful, and would probably be able and willing to explain whether it can do what you want. Or you could go ahead and try touchdown, because it does have a free trial.

I'd love to get some advice still. I am striking out. I tried purchasing Calengoo tonight because I thought it would work. However, when I added an event to Calengoo, it did not appear via Hotmail active sync (and when I entered an item into Hotmail's calendar, it did not show up in Calengoo, even though it had been showing up in Android's calendar just fine). And, even worsem my Outlook now gives me an error message on server status for the hotmail calendar.

Bummer! Not only did Calengoo not work for this set up, but it's created a problem that I need to solve just to retain my active sync between the Android calendar and Hotmail/Outlook connector. UPDATE: The good news is that the server error is only occuring on one computer's Outlook - another computer in my house has Outlook and it's synching fine with the android calendar. So, I only need to solve one computer issue.

So, is anyone out there using the Hotmail Outlook Connecter/Active sync with Android Calendar? What calendar apps can work with this set up?? I've love some advice!

I don't use Jorte now, but there is an option to use Jorte calendar alone (not hooked up w/ GCal.) I'm not sure how that would sync, though; I didn't explore it further.

I haven't followed this issue closely, but another thread here, We can now synchronize Outlook & Android without a 3rd party app or Exchange Server! , describes a freebie setup between active sync and android.

Since GCal's [nightmarish] "redesign" at the start of the month, I've been actively looking for another calendar/contacts solution besides the long-used Google Calendar. I still love Calengoo, but my issue is with Google itself — I'm not confident with the direction they're going (due to the whole Google+ thing becoming front-and-center). So, to be safe, I've tried to find a solution to move all my Google data TO Outlook and sync between Outlook and my phone. (Again, no 'hatred' towards Google; just paranoia with my own data).

One thing I like right now is that you can sync your desktop MS calendar with Windows Live Calendar, and MS now has a great mobile page that functions like a calendar app (Announced last month).

(I like that MS is trying harder to get into the game, btw.)

But I'm still playing with it; trying to get ready to make the jump if I decide I'm not comfortable with Google+ having my contacts/calendars/emails. (I mean, would you put all YOUR confidential stuff on Facebook? ...and Google's trying to compete with Facebook. Not trying to start a controversy, but I do want to keep my data secure and DON'T want it on a "social network".)

When I contacted Calengoo, they said that the problem could not have been caused by Calengoo - that it was a coincidence that the sync from that computer was broken after entering a calendar item to test Calengoo. So, I'm on my own there. I'm still not sure how to fix it. I may try creating a brand new hotmail account, moving my calendar items to it, deleting my old hotmail from outlook, and using the new account. I would think that should do the trick, but we'll see.

Tracey - Yes, the set up described on that thread is what I'm using. When I downloaded Jorte, my calendar items did not display within Jorte.

I'd still like to know... Is there anyone using a calendar app successfully who is using the hotmail connector to sync their outlook hotmail calendar to their phone?

Default Moxier is in a class of it's own

If you have a tablet, Moxier is in a class of it's own. It's just a beautiful and perfectly functional app. It is actually called "Moxier Mail", but includes a calendar app, tasks and notes also.

It's a carefully thought-out app, commercial though and costs about 20$ (trial of 14 days available). But it's certainly worth it. It would be a good app on a desktop computer, which is quite an achievement, considering that Honeycomb has not been out that long. Works with Exchange, Hotmail and Google etc, but best with MS solutions (it's sort of an Outlook for Android).

Haven't tested the phone size version, but it does not look too bad either (see the link).

Includes well-thought out widgets too, for each app + startup icons as widgets.

Now if somebody would just make an office suite of this quality level. None of the current versions are worth s*$t - the writer apps are pretty much like Notepad, nothing more.

I love google calendar except it only lets me choose a notification for my "event reminder". I need a full song or something longer than a second or two so it I can use it as my alarm clock when I need to wake up for an event.

I've tried most of the ones listed in this poll. Anyone know if a way to do this? I guess an app was made for exactly what I want but it doesn't work.

I post my message also in this discussion:

I'm going to buy an android smartphone and i need to have info about calendar apps.
Now i'm using "Aquacalendar" on my symbian smartphone and i love it.

What i 'd like to have in my calendar app:
1) categories of events: each category may have different aspect (i.e different color, background color, different icon .. and so on)
2) templates of events when I add a new event
3) Month view with icons for any event

Does exist a calendar app with these features for android ???

thank you in advance fou your suggestions !!

what i'd like to see (in a widget preferably), which i don't think exists is a "month" view (that isn't really a month view) that always has the current week as the first row and then consecutive weeks under it, rather than just showing the current month

'cause i don't really care to see what events i had 3 weeks ago when it was the 1st of july, but i'd quite like to see what i've got coming up 3 weeks from now when it's august

Agenda is the best version of what your asking for. It just hides the days that have nothing. Most calendar apps have Agenda view, alot of Agenda Widgets.

i do use calwidget for an agenda view, but it doesn't really give an at-a-glance idea of, say, do i have the next 4 weekends booked for something, or which day would be good for a particular new event

i wouldn't use it instead of an agenda widget, but in addition to

Hi guys,
this is my first post on this forum. I am looking to buy a android phone probably the htc sensation and i was wondering. I need a calender app and i love the pure grid calender from the youtube reviews. What i need in my calender is if i book an event i need the persons phone number in the event description. Now say i am near the event venue but cant find it i can go into my calender, then into my event and click on the phone number i entered and dial it instead of copying and pasting the number into my contacts. Can this be done in pure grid calender?
Hopfeully someone can help me out.
Much appreciated
King regards

I justs switched back to Business Calendar (from Gemini). Decided I like it better (although Gemini is much cooler looking). It seems to be similar to Pure Grid, and does what you want with phone numbers and addresses (just click on the map icon and will bring up directions).
