Keep the read/unread settings local

I have an HTC EVO and use the stock email app to check my gmail account. This worked great until my wife also got an android phone, and now when one of us reads a mail, it marks it as read on the other server which the other phone picks up. Is there any way to keep the read/unread status local so that reading it on one phone does not mark it as read on another?
