Have a look at this project: Speciotic I plan to extend it to enable recording species observations on your Android and then pull them up by logging on to your desktop computer. It's still in beta, so currently it only works for fungi...

I'd like a FIRST PERSON MOTORCYCE GAME. The players viewpoint would be from behind the handlebars of a street bike or a cruiser. The game play would be avoiding road hazards, and avoiding tickets. (or not) There should also be a race mode for racing against AI bikes on a race track. To steer the bike you'd hold the phone horizontal and tilt it left or right. To go faster you'd tilt it forward and to brake you'd tilt it backwards. Getting the phone to rumble when you hit something would be a great bonus.

You could use the camera to make it an augmented reality game, so you just run around the hallways looking through your screen which is a live video. Superimpose a front tire and some handle bars. Fun for the kids!

Default app Id like to have

I would like to have a live wallpaper that shows whats going on with the internals. Id like gauges that show temp, memory, battery, or cpu as its working, throw in graphs and those voice analysis type things (not sure what they are called). A live wallpaper that's nerdy cool and with real looking gauges not the cartoony ones. I've seen a couple of apps like this but they were badly designed and not real looking.

I figure this would be pretty easy to develop. So I've got a buddy (Read into that what you will) who is completely addicted to percocets. He's been on them for a year or so now and we have tried and tried to get him off it with no luck.

What I think would be helpful is an app that assists in the weening process. Basically you would type in what it is you are addicted to (Percocet, darvocet, tramadol) and how many pills per day you take. The app then runs in the back ground and an alarm sounds (or vibrates) when it is time to take a dose, and what that dose should consist of.

Functionality could have a timer that indicates how long until the next dose, over ride funtion if he can't wait (which gets calculated into the mix), and others. Not sure where the appropriate weening schedule would come from, but I assume some study has to have been done that speaks to that.

While I don't think people are going to stop using that stuff if they don't want to regardless of having a helper app, but if they do want to quit, it may offer them a little bit of structure to help them out.

Do developers look on this site and ever develop these suggestions?

An app that allows you to make a 2x2 or 2.3 widget that displays a live wallpaper. There are a few live wallpapers on the market that would be functional as a widget like go dev's clock wallpaper. I would love to use that as a clock on my lockscreen using widgetlocker but I don't want to lose my wallpaper.

An app that will automatically add closed captions or subtitles to any downloaded movie, show or video using the voice recognition system or other means.
This is long overdue for the deaf/hoh who happen to make up over 10% of the world population. Not to mention the others who just like captions to learn to read English.
That would go down in history.

Default remote on phone for controlling tablet

I'm planning on buying the Motorola Xoom when it's out.

I would like to be able to control it with my phone through bluetooth or WIFI (3g would be cool also). For instance when my tablet is connected to my TV I can play movies and watch Youtube videos and other stuff.

Also I like to be able to stream music/video/dvd in all kinds of formats from my one device to my other or from my network-HD to my android device.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would someone please develop an SMS app or mod the stock SMS app so that:

1. There are no threads or text 'bubbles'. I don't need to see the thread of messages and replies I have sent/received from one of my contacts. When someone sends me a text message I just want the choice to open it or not, to reply to it or not, and to delete it or not. I also want the ability to increase the default size of the text so I don't have to put on my reading glasses to read messages (I know that you can click on a message bubble and the message will then fill the whole screen, automatically enlarging the text).
2. If No 1 is taken care of then the stock text input box could be increased from its riduculously small size to fill the upper half of the screen above the keyboard (because there would be no thread 'bubbles'). That way I would be able to see the entire message I was typing instead of just 2 or 3 words. Again the ability to increase the size of the text in the input screen would be useful.

In other words, instead of trying to copy the Iphone SMS app, I just want a basic SMS app that you get on simple non-'smart' phones.

If this isn't the best place to grab some developer's attention can you direct me to where is?

I would gladly pay for a basic SMS app.

The reason is that it provides more accurate and actionable information to report an invasive species at the exact time and exact location it is actually encountered. The envisioned app would also have some guidelines to assist identifying the suspected invasive species.

Have you tried Handcent? It will allow you to adjust the text sizes.
Also, if you don't want the thread of previous messages between you and your recipient, then how are you supposed to keep track of the messages that you have saved?

Anyways, give Handcent a shot. There are many many many options to play with. See if you can make it do what you want.

I did try Handcent but I just want a simple no-frills SMS text app.

Surely any message that I receive will be in my 'Inbox' and any message I send will be in my Sent Items? Why would I need some other way of keeping track of them? Do I really need to see 'Bubbles' of the last 4 or 5 communications between me and someone else? I am not an obsessive texter. If I wanted to have an ongoing conversation with someone I would dial their number and actually speak to them!!

Thanks for your reply though. I would be as well buying a cheap old mobile phone to get the basic SMS app that I want.

oic, you want the app to store texts in a separate generic inbox and generic outbox, instead of in threads. I'm not sure what app would do that. Sorry.

Though I agree. I personally do not like the bubbles, so I customized Handcent to look just 'plain'. However they still appear in threads. But I find that threads are helpful to (1) not send texts to the wrong person accidentally, and (2) Find older texts very easily (if I need to find them for a name or number or something... you don't have to scroll through an inbox and open several messages just to find the right one).

Default Open Office or something like

I think porting open office or some other full sized text editor to the android tablets is not only a wish, but a necessity. I have been searching the forums and have found a half dozen posts asking about text editors and zero answers. Until there is a good text editor for android it will remain a phone OS; not a tablet OS.

We do read of cuz but some suggestion require quite substantial development for which indie or freelance developer don't have the time and resources. Most likely companies employing multiple developers can take up the suggestions.

Software development is quite a time consuming affair.

I'd like to see a selective call forwarding app. I've seen forwarding ALL calls, but no selective call forwarding (to another number), yet.

I'd love something that added the reverse of the normal bluetooth profiles. I want to be able to stream any audio from my computer to my phone, so that my phone essentially acts like the receiver for a wireless pair of headphones.

Yes, it's ghetto, but I'm cheap.

Plus, this could be used as an alternative to the built-in microphone during video chats or IP calls, since the built-in microphones are often pretty bad.

I'm pretty sure that Jamcast will provide the "speaker" functionality, but via Wifi rather than Bluetooth.

Yeah, I saw that. I just would rather have bluetooth for two reasons.
1. It's easier to work with when you're using a public/school/corporate WiFi system where certain ports may be blocked and you don't have access to open them.

2. It's cheaper, since the computer would already have the software built in. The phone just needs to tell the computer that it can act as a headset. The Jamcast server is $30, where as with a bluetooth profile, a $1-$3 app would achieve the same goal.

I enjoy the HotelsByMe.com app (uses gps to show prices of local hotels without needing to type your location, sort by price, great!)

I wish there was a "Hostels near me".

Often I just need a bed and a shower for under $30 when I'm on a trip, I don't care about privacy. View it on a map so if there are none close by I can pick the one that wont make me have to backtrack.

Default 'Open" app

I don't know if this has been mentioned here, but I had a great little app on my Palm called 'Open' that let you enter the hours of local businesses. It was simple, Store or Business Name, Days of the week, Hours open (easily repeated on days of the week), closed during lunch, etc. I miss that little app.

This is super intense, but as far as I'm aware nothing exists to do it yet (though it looks like maybe Tasker can do some of it? I'll have to try it out sometime)

Anyway I want an app that will provide complete settings changes (kind of like creating separate users/profiles on Windows or Mac):

Set one profile for when I'm at home and in easy reach of my charger: max out performance, crank the display, apps update constantly, wifi always on, if I miss a call or text I get repeated notifications until I check it.

One profile for when I'm at school... I'll still have wifi, and some access to a charger but not extended, so maybe apps don't update quite as often, I only get notifications for missed calls/messages once, everything's on vibrate...

And one for "walking around," that updates apps almost never, display's down, etc.

Oh and I want it all to have toggles from my homescreen!

That'd be cool.

And one for "walking around," that updates apps almost never, display's down, etc.

Oh and I want it all to have toggles from my homescreen!

That'd be cool.
Yes. You just described Tasker being used at less than 1/2 of its potential.

How about an application that takes a picture of a pill, does some OCR, color and edge detection and tells me what medicine it is.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.devjoey.pillid is the only pill-related app I could find, but it seems like it's just a database. I want one that will use the camera and go out to the internet (so it's not a 20MB app on my phone like this one is).

It could also do the usual stuff like generic names, doses, used for, warnings, expirations, etc etc.

That's the name of the game! Check out some of the tasker threads here, crazy stuff you can do with your phone with a bit of imagination and the right codes.

Default How about an app that does this.....

Desperate for project tracking app

And, if you would add the ability to track expenses by scanning the barcode on your receipts that would be great as well. LOL.

My app idea (unless it exists, if so let me know!)

App: what am I eating
What it does: explains the specifics of a highly processed food ingredient.

Example: on the back of my Reese's pieces box i couldn't help but notice that among the ingredients was titanium dioxide (I know, say what?). As per wikipedia:

"Titanium dioxide, also known as titanium(IV) oxide or titania, is the naturally occurring oxide of titanium, chemical formula TiO2. When used as a pigment, it is called titanium white, Pigment White 6, or CI 77891. It has a wide range of applications, from paint to sunscreen to food colouring. When used as a food colouring, it has E number E171."

so basically a streamlined version of wikipedia just for processed food stuffs with a short explanation of what it is and possible health benefits/concerns.

I think part of what makes this hard is that whether something is "good" for you is subjective. Is Sodium good for you? yes, but also no.
But I totally get what you're saying, that'd be pretty cool... and to go off of that, if there already is one (that'd be cool, I haven't found a good one yet), that's for a healthy lifestyle. You input what you eat, and it tracks your calories, and tells you whether you're above/below your daily intake level (which you set), if you go to the gym it tracks your statistics and lets you know if you're gaining/losing... maybe to be really cool it can suggest meals for you to eat within your calorie range and give you info on workouts for the gym.

Oh and it also pops up with an alarm every ten minutes that tells me to PUT THE CIGARETTE DOWN! haha.

My friend was telling me about this-- if it's what you're talking about, it seems kind of neat. Basically you set up an airport express in every room and connect it to speakers, then you use your iphone to wirelessly control every sound set-up in your house/apartment. Wake up in the morning, your music plays in your bedroom. Click a few buttons, the same music switches over to your bathroom for your shower, then over to your kitchen when you make breakfast.

(We were talking about whether he should switch from android to iphone).

That sounds pretty cool. (I tried to explain to him there's *probably* some way to hook that up with Android, and you could probably customize it with specific timers and alarms and playlists and whatnot... but he's right in the fact that, with Android, you'd have to cobble different stuff together and go on a scavenger hunt to find everything you need and go LEARN how to do it... with Apple, you just plug in the shit and you're good to go.)

maybe it exists and someone will point me in the right direction, but i've yet to find it. anyhow, i would love something that recognised you had opened an app that required a data connection of some sort - say a browser - and then promted you to make the connection of your choice, (3g, wifi etc), rather than realising that you hadn't yet and then having to exit the browser , make your connection and then start up again

i know it's not really a big deal having to do all that but it is one of my pet hates about the system as i do this all the time

I would love an app that lets me take old scanned maps and transfer them to my android and then use the GPS system.

I basically want to wonder around with old topographical maps or street maps to see how a place has changed over time.

If anyone develops something like that please let me know. I've posted on this earlier and there doesn't seem to be an app with this functionality as of May 2011

Some of us use an "in-app toggle", by setting up the search button so that if you hold it, it takes you to another interface which contains a few icons, such as a WiFi toggle. After having toggled your WiFi you can then hold the back button to return to your application.

I like widget locker which does double- duty for me as a screen locker and also as this in-app toggle.

Cool Food Genie - Could be the Next Big Thing

Menu Planner, Meal Planner, Grocery List Generator, Nutritional Analyst
Its a diet and exercise dream app... it would have to have a website and would be a social app highly powered by crowd sourcing .. and of course mobile phones.

So here is a typical walkthrough of using the app..

I want to go on a diet .. lets say "Atkins '72" diet. I go in the app .. search for the diet .. download it .. then I put "Follow Diet"
I go into the Diet Planner .. and I can see a default diet. I click on foods I don't like .. and are presented with a list of foods that are geographically near me (ie. at shopping stores) that fit the diet's criteria. I select my alternatives .. and save the diet. It then generates a grocery list .. complete with total price .. and where I need to go to find each food. I go shopping and pick up the ingredients. Any extra foods I buy - I scan the UPC code .. and its automatically entered into my home inventory. Next day I start eating according to the diet. I decide I want a granola bar .. so I can the UPC off the granola bar .. and its automatically added into the food I ate for the day. Throughout the week .. I have coke .. beef jerky .. chips .. etc and I weigh in .. record my weight .. and see that I shot up. I can go back and do analysis .. and I see everything that I ate wrong. I do this repeatedly for months ... then go and share my food log with a doctor - who now has access to my log of what I ate for the past few months .. how I was feeling each day .. what my weight was .. etc.

Areas of the app:
  • Food Database
  • Store Database
  • Recipe Database
  • Log
  • Diet Database
  • Meal Planner
  • Grocery List
  • Food Genie
Food Database
  • Database of foods. Would record the type of food .. meal suitability ... nutritional information ... ingredients ... UPC Bar Code .. Picture of Food / Packaging .. Measurement Type (Measured in each, cups, pounds, etc)
  • Food will contain storage information ... safety information (ie. how to detect spoilage)
  • Every Food would have an attached Locale. This would allow someone to differentiate between Mountain Dew in Canada, and Mountain Dew in US -- without adding a duplicate food.
  • Users can add foods - and can edit existing foods.
  • Manufacturers can (through the website) claim the foods - and then control all the information themselves. The incentive for them to do this is anonymous data showing who is buying their foods - where they are .. how much they average in spending on groceries .. etc.
  • The app would start with known free databases such as the USDA Food Database. It lists common staple foods, and has a full nutritional breakdown of the foods.
  • Foods can be linked together as "Alternatives". So "Del Monte Banana" can be listed as an alternative to "Dole Banana", etc. Nutritional information on alternatives cannot deviate beyond 5%.
  • Users can comment and rate the individual foods and offer tips pertaining to the food itself
Supplements
  • Supplements will be treated in the app / database as a food item - but will not be shown on food searches (ie. when adding a recipe)
Store Database
  • Database of stores. Users would add Grocery Stores using their phone. They could add Pictures .. addresses.. names .. owner information .. etc about the store.
  • Phone would store GPS location of store
  • Users can add stores - and can modify existing stores.
  • Store owners can (through the website) claim the stores - and then control all the information themselves. Stores can control
Different Locales for multi-national food chains
  • Users can comment and rate the stores .. and offer tips pertaining to the food itself
Restaurants
  • Although they function like stores from a data / app point of view .. restaurants can be added that have the same information as stores.
  • Restaurants have their own set of foods that do not appear in regular food database searches (ie. when making a recipe)
  • Restaurant owners can (through the website) claim the restaurant - and then control all the information themselves. The incentive for restaurants is so they can see different anonymous statistics on their users (Average weight, gender, diets that many customers are on, etc) that can aid them in business planning.
  • Users can rate each food at the restaurant .. and can rate the restaurant itself.
Home
  • Every user can control their Home, which for all intents and purposes inside the app - functions like a store .. except it doesn't show up on GPS .. in searches .. etc of other people (but will show up for the user)
Inventory Database
  • Database of which stores have what foods.
  • Users can scan a barcode to identify the food (or add if it doesn't exist).
  • Users can record the price ... quantity .. condition .. expiry .. location in the store... add photos .. size of product etc.
  • Through website - users can make a floor layout of the store
  • Store owners can (through website) claim the store - and then opt to control all the inventory information themselves. They are automatically provided with non-identifying information / statistics on what is being said / done with their inventory.
  • In the case of store-run inventories - users can report discrepencies .. omissions .. etc and they get sent to the store owners.. Given enough errors - the store owner will lose control of inventory and it will become crowd sourced.
  • Users can selectively opt in (as opposed to opting out) to provide their personal information to the store if the store is in control by the owners. It would be up to the stores to offer coupons / incentives for individual customers in exchange for them sharing their personal information - which stores can use.
  • Crowd Sourced inventories allow users to add, or edit inventories. Inventories cannot be removed - only set to zero quantity.
  • Users can also inventory their "Home" as well as perform updates / audits on their inventory.. again - full UPC bar code scanning for simplicity.
  • Foods can be tagged with 'expiry dates' in which they will be deleted. ie. if you have 8 cans of Tomato soup .. you can provide a list of expiry dates for each can. Its hopeful that food manufacturers (if anyone makes this app) - will start printing 3D bar codes on packages that identify the UPC of the food .. plus its expiry date)
Recipe Database
  • Recipes are made up of different foods. They contain photos .. instructions for how to prepare them .. videos .. etc
  • Each Recipe has variations - which allow up to 10% of the recipe to change before creating a new recipe.
Log
  • Users can select what they have eaten. They can add recipes .. individuals foods .. or restaurant menu items.
  • Food Log will use available nutritional information - and give a total of nutritional data along with the percentages of daily recommended intakes. As an example - you can, at the end of the day see how many calories or carbs you consumed.
  • Food Log can offer you a variety of graphs and analytics for the food that you have consumed.
  • Users can enter their weight in each day .. and can also supply other information such as health results (ie. cholesterol / blood sugar checks) .. etc etc
  • Using weight .. diet .. etc .. more advanced statistics and analysis can be enabled.
  • Users can also use the "Wellness" section of the log to report their mood .. energy level .. health problems .. etc. Serves as a nice way of analyzing root causes for health disorders.
  • Users are given a health "score" based solely on vitamin / mineral and nutrient composition. Someone that is obtaining all of the vitamins / minerals / nutrients they need - without going excessively over (ie. the green zone) will get a 100%.
  • If the user has inventoried their "Home" .. then it will deduct the consumed food from the home inventory.
Diet Database
  • Someone can create a "Diet". A Diet differs from a menu plan in that it prescribes a list of options to eat, rather than a specific item. Someone that makes a diet will have a wide range of selection tools .. ie. allowing only specific food in .. only food that satisfy a specific nutritional equation ... etc.
  • A Diet can have different locales
  • A Diet can have different versions (ie. One for sedentary people, one for active people .. etc - but still the same diet name)
  • A Diet can have Private foods .. private stores .. private inventories .. all controlled by the Diet creator. This data is hidden from public searches and only appear to individuals who have subscribed to a diet.
  • Diets can be free or purchased.
  • The idea is that Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig or Atkins .. can all do up their diets on the website .. and then send them to their customers or sell them directly through the website.
  • Once a user subscribes to a diet - they can choose to follow it. When following it - it will populate their meal plans with a default selection of foods according to the diet - user can then select between diet alternatives.
  • The diet will support advanced rules in its definition to disallow changing a default food if it will break a rule. Ie. to keep sodium under 400mg a day .. you can't add a food that will bring you above that.
  • Diets can be locked by the creator .. or they can be unlocked - allowing people to use them as a template, and then modify them within their own personal diet collection.
  • All diets are relative to the day they start .. either using weekdays / monthdays as a basis - or by simply incrementing days forward.
Meal Planner
  • Essentially a future version of the log's food selection system. Users just switch days in the log to access the meal planner.
  • Similar to a Diet except its a very specific list of foods on specific days.
  • Allows the user to plan days .. weeks ..or even months in advance.
Grocery List
  • Allows a user to generate a grocery list for a period of time (ie. today, or for next two weeks)
  • Compiles and combines foods from the various days / recipes into a grand total. If the user inventoried their home, it then subtracts what it has already from the list.
  • The List is then sourced using the user's current location .. store locations .. store inventories .. etc.
  • The user can select to put preference by price .. by least amount of shopping locations .. or other advanced filters such as "Prefer Locally grown food" or "Prefer Organic Food" etc.
  • User gets the shopping list - and merely checks them off the list while shopping. Anything "extra" the user buys they can simply scan in whilst putting in cart .. and it will automagically be added to the home inventory.
  • Grocery lists can be uploaded to the store, if that store has taken control of their store on the app - and indicated they provide delivery.
  • If the stores have layouts - its possible for the app to figure out the most efficient path in order to collect all the groceries.
Food Genie
  • The Food Genie can make a menu plan. The user sets the parameters (Price, Nutrition, Caloric value), one of which could be to use only food that the user has in their home inventory.
  • Given the parameters, the Food Genie consults recipes .. sources the food .. and automatically creates a menu plan .. grocery lists. etc.
Social Aspect
  • First off - the biggest social aspect is the crowd sourcing of the information .. tips ... comments.. photos .. etc.
  • Secondly - users can team up with each other and do the same diet or same meal plan.
  • With everyone entering their weight .. what they are eating .. etc .. people (and epidemiologists) can very quickly determine which diets .. which foods .. contribute to weight loss .. weight gain .. and possibly health issues (such as lethargy)
  • Users can control the privacy of their information .. it defaults to an Opt Out .. and users can selectively "Opt In" to invidividual friends .. companies .. manufacturers .. people within GPS radius .. etc.

Default A semi-evolved idea - P*ng

P*ng - a cell phone game

Concept: A game of pings, played by phones. Any registered phone can start or join a p*ng game. The angle of a phone when it gets p*nged directly affects which player is the next p*ng recipient, just like a mirror would if hit by a beam of light. With weird angles, you can p*ng around around the world. Into the ground p*ngs end the current p*ng.

Visualization: A world map, with "live" p*ngs shown as parabolas.

Challenges: network congestion; goal of the game; too many players in the game; ending games; all p*ngs can only be identified by the p*ng game number

Finances: Ad supported

I have 2 idear of app :
__________________________________________________ __
1 : Gaming Stats in Real Time :

Act like the G19 Keyboard LCD For Gaming. Need some kind of program running on the gaming computer, then i can use my android phone or even my tablette, and have real time information. Will be very interesting, let say i have a 10 inch android and i can see in real time the MAP, or my ammo, or my friend, stuff, right on my side ? That will be interesting.

Exemple : YouTube - ‪Battlefield Bad Company 2 G19 App HD‬‏
__________________________________________________ __

2 : Link Phone to Tablette
I have a EEE Transformer with android and will like, when im in my WIFI or even with 3G, that when my phone ring, i can pick up the phone from my tablette, or even call people, or just tell me my phone is ringing, Maybe even map where i lost my phone? The EEE Transformer have a MIC, so why not be able to call people as a hand free device ? Also be able to SMS from my tablette so if i use my tablet, and my phone not arround i can use it to sms people.
__________________________________________________ __

Those are my 2 idear, i know the phone thing is possible, but not the gaming stats, that might be a little to complicate ;P

Default Mobile data toggle widget

Rather than separate widgets for wifi, 3G, 4g that I have to set separately, I'd like to see a 1x1 widget that cycled wifi > 3G > 4G > off.

I would like to make/use an app for the antiques trade that identifies Hallmarks.

An example of a web based wizard can be found here.
Gold Hallmark Identification Wizard

Is there a way to enter the information into a programme that creates the app?

An app the sets macros for settings such as auto sync, ringed type, wifi, GPS and such that does not run your battery down by running all those rules. This widget should be provided by HTC.

Default Audio engineer app that would be so awsome

If you ae familliar with live sound you probly know of a device called an instantreplay made by 360 systems. I allows you to import audio tracks and assign buttons to fire them off very quickly. These tracks are alot of the time stage walk up music, sound effects, speaker introductions, and so forth. It would be so awsome if i could take all the audio tracks i needed to use and drag/drop them onto my xoom import them into an app and assign them to labeled virtual buttons that can play the imported or assigned audio tracks onced pressed. this sounds like it would not be to difficult but would be incredibly usefull. thee are a few programs that are used with pc tablets that do this but nothing on the android os.

Default

I've looked everywhere for a clone of the original HTC Desire/Sense (?) clock|stopwatch|timer widget but it doesn't seem to exist.

There are a few alternative apps that will do similar things but nothing like the one that comes with HTC.
