Could it be at all possible to code an app for the G1 that would allow you to say, slightly jerk the phone to the left or right, and that gesture would act as a phone shortcut? Since the phone is equipped with an accelerometer, it seems like it could be possible to have it behave a certain way, depending on certain movements.

So say I wanted to start writing a SMS message. Without even having to touch the screen, or any of the buttons, I simply just jerk the phone slightly to the right (or any sort of gesture), and then up comes the compose SMS message menu.

Is it possible?

Can someone PLEASE make a talk to text app, like the Blackberrys.. You have to use 2 hands to text and it is very annoying when you can only use one. (like driving).

I didn't even think about using the phone driving....that would be inconvenient. A talk to text app would be awesome.

How about a Currency converter with up to the minute values for international travelers?

Default Recipe interface

I am looking at getting a recipe program for my pc. I have seen that several of the top rated recipe programs have an interface for a windows mobile smart phone to transfer ingredient lists and shopping lists to the phone.

I sure would be interested in an interface program for my G1.

Thanks

Default just a few

I'd like to see....
- video or animated pictures for caller ID
- animated back ground wall paper (like in windows vista)
- bluetooth music to other bluetooth devices (like bluetooth headphones or bluetooth enabled cars)
-acceleromator lava lap. (I get bored at work)

maybe some other things that I can think of....but those are the major ones I want.

"ShopSavvy" uses the G1 camera to scan UPC barcodes and then searches on them.

Many weightloss websites have databases of foods that one can input to track calorie and nutrition intake. I'm one of the "ones".

Very often, what I've eaten is not in the database and I end up having to manually input all of the calorie and nutrition information. This is a pain in the butt, so I usually end up failing to track my calorie/nutrition intake.

It would be great if someone would write a program that would use the G1's camera to scan UPC barcodes on products I/we eat and then use that barcode to look up the calorie/nutrition data (perhaps on the product manufacturer's website) and then post the resulting "tracking" information into the diet websites or maybe even a standalone program on the G1.

What do you think? Can it be done? (I don't know the Android programming language, so I'm asking you gurus.)

It can be done very easily, the difficult part would be keeping and maintaining a database of food products along with their nutritional values. This could be possible with the leading named brands, but when you go down to the level of small brands including shops "own" brands then you have a scalability nightmare on your hands.

Throw in to the equation foods from the UK, Europe, USA, Australia etc etc *and* the hosting of the database and you will see why no one has done this yet.

damn neat idea if you ask me though, if anyone is daring enough to do this

I totally think like a In-Call Voice Changer would be awesome and fun.

Also it could have a in app - caller I.D. Block function, have a few voice options like, BLACK MAN, BLACK WOMAN, THE GUY FROM SCREAM, OBAMA, GEORGE BUSH, or even Chinese Restaurant person, or even APU from the Kwikee Mart.

either way this would be a fun app to have.

or it could like speed the tempo in ur voice or make it slower .

Default Flight Tracker App Idea

As an aviation enthusiast who, alas, spends much more time on the ground looking up than the other way around, I would LOVE to see an Android app that allowed the user to pinpoint the identity of a commercial flight passing overhead -- i.e, you see a plane in the sky, point the phone at it (similar in concept to something like Sky Map for star constellations) and have the flight information displayed.

The FAA makes flight tracking information available online, it's used by sites like FlightAware.com. The data is obtained from the flight plan filed for the aircraft -- as all airline flights operate under instrument flight plans, for example, that information is readily available. Many private and corporate flights are available for tracking as well, provided they're operating under either a VFR (visual) or IFR (instrument) flight plan and haven't been blocked by the user.

I have ZERO programming skill... but it seems to me this wouldn't be a hard app to put together, using FAA info obtained via the internet connection, combined with GPS and accelerometer data. What do you think?

Default Audio Patchbay

... to route non-phonecall (sorry to get so technical) audio to Bluetooth.

Not stereo information necessarily-

It seems that there is currently some "switching" that happens. For example, I had the "Music" app running (playing audio) and received a call. When the call was finished, the music could be heard through the Bluetooth headset for a split second before it switched back to the speaker.

Could a program be written to switch / route / patch the audio to Bluetooth?

What does everyone here think of adding a Limewire type application?

I had an application called iSlSk on my 2G iPhone (jailbroken) and it was actually great. It resynced the newly downloaded songs to my iTunes and even moved the files into my phone's library, all without a PC.

Default Radio if possible

"Mobile phones and telephone towers emit microwave radiation, which is in the radio frequency radiation (RFR) part of the spectrum of electromagnetic waves."

If the above is true would it be possible to create an app that would allow my G1 to play on my car radio? I know you can buy a device to do it but if i could keep my phone charging and listen on my car that would be great. Not to mention using it in the house or anywhere with a radio tuner.

Thanks,
Scott

If there was an app where I could configure these sorts of things to happen with the flip of a "switch" Id be golden.

I could also use it to turn certain things back on... like a switch for when I am in noisy areas like train stations.. this switch would: turn up the ringe volume all the way up, turn on the vibration (if it were already on no effect), change the ringtone to something else, and perhaps activate bluetooth (in ear ringing is nice!)

Can anyone grasp my idea?
Have you used the Power Manager app? You can create custom profiles. Then you can create a shortcut for a profile on your home screen. You just click the shortcut to apply that profile.

Profiles can control brightness, ringer mode (normal, silent, vibrate), GPS, Wifi, Screen timeout, Bluetooth, Auto-sync (on/off).

Profiles cannot control 2G vs 3G, nor can they control volume (just ringer mode).

You would make one profile for "Work", and one for "Train", or whatever. You can make as many shortcuts as you want. Alternatively, you can just launch the Power Manager and choose a profile from the menu.

The app can also work off of triggers, like being connected A/C power, or when the batteries get low. I personally don't like the triggers. You can either delete the built-in profiles that use triggers, or you can leave them there but turn off monitoring.

It sounds like you'd need something else if you really want it to change volume or ring tone.

Default Personal Libraries?

I did a quick search for barcodes and personal libraries, but didn't find anything... What about scanning the barcodes on ones books and/or dvds to build a personal library database (a bit like the CueCat that almost was)? I just got my g1 and I'm sure someone has imagined this already, I just couldn't find it...

I would like to see more apps work together. not many apps use the radar, or work seamlessly with other apps.

I would like to see a game like barcode beasties, but instead of scanning barcodes I would like something more like your own monster that you raise and train to fight agenst other users via internet or bluetooth (something that could be done face to face). Also an alert of when someone else is near that is playing also. I guess something like a pokemon game that interacts with others.

Default Speed radar application

There is a great and simple application I have used on my previous Nokia devices which is called "SpeedLimit" (also refered to as "SpeedCam"). The concept is simple : it takes as input a list of know speed radar positions in countries you select, and will warn you audibly and visually when you come closer to one of these beasts. They have now a release of this for WinMo, Nokia and the iPhone. I'd LOVE to see one for Android. I contacted the website admins who said they have no andoid dev skills, but would also love to be able to propose this to Android users.
Have a look here : http://www.scdb.info/en/
Anyone interested to develop this ?

Default Phone Blacklist

I would like to see a Phone Blacklist app like iPhone and Symbian.

It prevents calls and SMS from annoying people.

When you insert a phone number in you black list, this number can not make calls for you or even send SMS. When he (or she) calls, your phone doesn't ring and the call log doesn't register the call. When you receive a SMS, your phone doesn't register the message on SMS inbox. It register missed calls and SMS on it's own registry.

When you wanto to see who called or sent a SMS for you, just type the password to access your blacklist.

See it on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkdMhLv63F8

Anyone interested to develop this?

WTF? Texting while driving? If you get caught making a call while driving it'll cost you around 100$ fine. Texting, and you'll be kissing your license goodbye.
At least, that's the current law here in Switzerland.

Default Wrong approach to Task Manager ?

So as it seems, you need a rooted or reflashed G1 if you want to have a task manager that can kill tasks. Lot's of efforts and risks for average G1 users...
Why not take another very simple approach ? If I understood correctly, Android will stick to running 6 tasks at the same time, when you start the 7th it will kill the oldest running task. Based on this, a very simple program could launch 6 processes that are doing nothing (kind of a "sleep" process), thereby forcing Android to kill the 6 mem/comm/cpu hungry tasks you had already in memory. One could develop this app with a few more options, like turning off wifi and GPS together with starting the 6 dummy tasks, or tuning off bluetooth and Wifi, etc.

What do you think ?

Default Dr. Droid

Hello, I'd like to request an application if someone is wanting to make it. It would be called Dr. Droid

It would be an application to keep track of your medications. You would input the medication, the dosage (how many mg per pill, how many mg to take for dose), the count of how many you have left, what days you have to take it, and what times per day (even multiple) you have to take it. It could also have an option for no date or time, but still keep track of the amount of pills left, for those people who are prescribed medication that is to be taken "as needed".

The program would alert you when it was time to take your medication (with a time customizable snooze option if you're not where you can take your medications), and would also alert you when you were running low on the medication and need to reorder it (you could define how low the prescription could get before you get the warning). It would also have a button next to each medication labeled "take dose" or something, so if they take it a little before the alert, it would set the count properly, and cancel the alert. A user defined applicable period for next dose could be set for each medication (like if a medication should be taken every 4 to 6 hours) and if the they press the button to take dose before that period hits, it could give them a warning (something like "warning, you last took this medication at {time} and the prescription states to wait at least {time period} before taking it again. Are you sure you want to take another dose?).

This program would be good for people who need to take multiple medications daily or even those who only have to take one. It's good for those who have to take prescribed medications temporarily (for infection, etc..) as they have a higher chance of forgetting to take their medications on time. This program would also be good for women who are on birth control, so they have a reminder to take said birth control, and for everyone to keep track of how many doses they have left so they can refill their medications before they run out.

When envisioning this, the thought of the alert screen having a cartoon doctor with a text bubble stating "Dr. Droid prescribes {number of pills}{medication} to be taken immediately!

I would request that this application be either free or at a cost of no more than .99c (free offset with ads is always a great way to go about it), and All I ask is that you give idea props to me. You can keep the full software income derived from this program.

My significant other has FVL, which is a rare blood disorder that causes her blood to clot easily. I remind her to take her medications daily, and she has to take them at different times. this application would help out immensely.

If there are any takers please post back here or send me a PM. thanks

There is an application on the market called mymedbox which is free and been released in the last couple of days. Could it be an option to contact the developer to see if they could build on it for you?

Most developers are normally open to suggestions and feedback that could possibly improve and make more useful their applications. I know I have found that in the past when I have contacted them.

Default My ideal app

Would be fairly simple I think.

To scan a barcode and to check amazon listings only (whether that be .com .uk or any other preference) and provide prices for new used etc. Perfect when I'm on my buying trips.
A scoutpal service for the G1 in effect ....I'm sure there'll be one soon.

I saw an app the other day that (I Believe) had some important chemistry formulas and calculations on it

I'd like if someone were to expand on the idea and would sell study charts with important info about a variety of subjects, similar to sparkcharts

Am I the only person who thinks the Google Contact Manager is woefully inadequate? I have a business contact list (in Palm, migrating to Outlook) with over 2000 entries. Each entry has birthdays, anniversaries, web pages, carefully formatted notes, etc., all of which would be lost by migrating it to Google contacts. Google contacts and the G1 contact app are glorified cell-phone phone-number lists. Is this a stunted, proprietary Nokia cell phone or is it the most advanced phone and OS in the industry?

Come on, why isn't there a real, professional, PIM-level contact application out there? With REAL sync to the contact database on one's PC?

(I had a T-Mobile rep saying that if I were a serious user I'd have to get a Windows Mobile phone. Yuck.)

how about a sound utility i was bombed that no one has yet to make even an attempt at this. Something as simple as more sound choices for notifications such as text, email, etc.....also most importantly i would like a tone like the palm phones for my physical keyboard and also have other choices once i get sick of the sounds, maybey even incorparating hatpic feedback in the program...!? anyone wanna make an app like that real quick.

widgets, but not just any widgets customizable ones make them smaller and change colors and what not, so they don't take up all the phones screen real state like they do now.

I see where you're coming from, I felt the same way when I transferred from my Sidekick to the G1.

I suppose we could use the phone's memory, or a google doc XML file to save your contact list with many fields filled out

Would be an interesting program to develop. Maybe when I get a little time off from school...

Default Photokast

I'd like to see some form of Photokast for the android platform. It's really the one app that I'm simply envious of on my friend's iPhone.

I got one for another enhancement for an alarm clock (yes, I have trouble getting up to alarms).

- Nap Mode: You launch the alarm app and instead of setting up a new alarm, you choose "nap mode". It pops a list of with 15,30,45,60,custom. Select, and blamo. The alarm is set for that amount of time. I use my phone alarm clock for naps all the time. Possibly even make it so that the snooze feature can't be used for naps (this is common for some nap-mode alarm clocks).

- Thinking Based Snooze: Like those alarms with the blocks you have to assemble or something. This would truely test your cognitive skills to make sure you are awake and not just habitually hitting the snooze button (like me). Example: The alarm goes off, you can't turn it off (or snooze it) until you answer 5 math based questions. After that, the alarm can be snoozed or turned off. The questions would be rather simple (6x9, 2+7, etc).
-- Ability to add a popup note (bold, good sized text)?

- Additional Options: Ability to set maximum number of snoozes, once you snooze that X amount of times, the alarm can only be shut off and not snoozed again.

WORLD CLOCK!!

Android needs an app with at least 4 other time zones (and nice time zone selection). Look at WorldMate on the Palm for a great example of a classy world-time clock app. (Google WorldMate Palm and look at Images.)

The existing world-time app on Android with the spinning globe is at best a toy. I need a serious world-time app so I can check times before calling business contacts in Europe or the Far East. And have a time calculator to see when it'll be a certain time there or here.

Are G1 users that provincial? There are a hundred tip calculators but no world time clock. Sheesh.
