I would love an XM radio app or widget and also vlingo so I could voice search Google! Something along the lines of Urban Spoon and the job search app mentioned would be great too. Otherwise, loving Android!

I haven't read through this entire thread, so sorry if someone mentioned this, but...

I would love an app that lets me turn my phone into a work pager. Yes, there are apps that do this (sort of), but not one I've found that does all of the following...

-filter sms alerts based on keyword(s) both in the contact field and in the message body
-select alert notification, for example: "sev1" or "sev2" would be a different alert than "sev3" or "sev4".
-change how long the alert goes for, or allow you to change how many times it repeats. I'm a deep sleeper and need it to go off for a minute or two sometimes before I hear it.

Nice to have:
-widget on front page that lets me quickly turn on and off when I'm on call.

Love you guys!

Sports Radio App:

Obviously, there is no tuner in these phones, but there is internet. Most sports games are on AM sports stations, and many of those stations stream radio. Allow users to add streams to the library.

For example: My Cincinnati Bearcats can always be heard on 700wlw (700wlw.com). I could open the app, select my team, and see what stations they could be heard on. When you click that station, it streams.

Extra bonus: Import all sports schedules and calendars so when you look up your team, you also can see when they play next.

Ok. Let's start with a fish finder. I fish from bank and boat. On my boat I have a fish finder. I want a fish finder that will show me movement in the water about 100 feet out and up to 30 feet deep.

I also had a problem with fish and game scaring the heck out of me at midnight blinding me with their flashlights and delaying in identifying themselves. I realized that when I am fishing at night and concentrating I may not notice movement around me. Therefore I would be interested in an app that detects movement near me, say 20 feet.

Finally, not an app, and it may exist, but a protector for my droid that will allow me to use it near water safely in the event of a minor submersion.

for the metal detector, I have no idea, but a compass works magnetically, and I think I have heard that some phones have a magnetometer or something (im guessing its for the compass in the phone). maybe thats how, and im sure even if it does work, its not gonna be anything like a real metal detector.

and the motion sensor, depending on the style, I think it monitors the change in pixels regarding the image it sees to know if somethings moving.

but that camera still wont tell you whats going on 3 feet underwater 20 feet off shore. and the phones only have one tiny camera and it can only point one direction with a limited feild of vision, so no way it could detect something 360 degrees.

had a long answer written, and the page didnt load so its gone. short answer is no, but you could have 2 GPS enable devices also using something like google locale or whatever its called and you could write a program to let one device notify you when the other device gets within the threshold you setup on your device. but that needs either wifi or mobile network as far as I know since GPS doesnt really transmit data other than location from my understanding.

FIRST POST!

Anyway, I've searched and searched this forum, the market, and the internet in general and I can't seem to find an app or a feature for this...

Basically, what I would like is an app, or built in feature, that can differentiate between multiple types of notifications (email, plugging in, calendar items, etc) and allow me to pick a different sound for each type of notification.

Got my HTC Hero 2 days ago and I'm in love with it... Much better than my old Samsung Instinct could ever dream of being lol. I'd just like to hear a different sound when I get my email than I hear when I plug my phone in.

EDIT: I'm an idiot... each individual app/widget/whatever has its own settings i can tweak... heh i always forget about that darn menu button.

I'd like a flashlight that used the LED flash instead of just a white screen. I've had 3 Sony Ericssons in the past and they all did this.

Speaking of Sony Ericsson, they're coming out w/ a phone that you can operate your PS3's XMB. You can access PSN, as well as send and receive messages. If they could come up w/ an app that would work that, this phone would become night unbeatable. Of course, that same phone also came w/ a uniformed Media Player, FM Radio, and 8.1mp camera, but whatever.

the 2nd (and forgive me if there already is an app for this...i'm new to android and will be getting my 1st android phone on the 9th)...is an app that allows you to have like a speed dial widget where you can use people's pictures as the shortcut of sorts to dial. so you'd click on the app, the pictures would come up, and then you just click on the picture and the phone dials. no scrolling thru contacts, just a quick shortcut speed dialer with pictures now...if there's already an app for this, can someone please reply to me so that way i can get it when i get my phone?
For the first one, you'd have to have texts from last night's permission to use their content, so not many developers will care to put in the effort just to get a cease and desist.

for the second one, any HTC phone has the feature to represent favorites as pictures on one of your desktops and click to dial. HTC's Sense UI is wonderful.

10 Android Apps We Will Actually Use
I didn't see either of these two apps on the (Motorola Droid) Market???

I saw an iPhone app that I really liked and it was a virtual coin collecting album to enter coins in that you are collecting and eliminate acquiring duplicates - very cool.

Also, if USAA would make it so we could deposit checks from android phones like the iPhone does that would be great.

The individual companies who make the phones supply the markets and dictate what is to be found in the markets.

Stupid and geeky, but would WOW people is done right.

Use the ecompass and accelerameter and possibly the GPS to overlay your position or virtual position over a JPG map of a building layout.
so you could appear to navigate within the building like in the movies and TV
James Bond stuff.
I have an idea how to do it but do not have the programming skills to pull it off.

idk if this exists already but here goes

i have a eris, idk if you hav emore options with other droids but here is my idea....

when i hit the physical call button i have my call history page, the keyboard overlayed, left screen button for collapse keyboard, call button (to call last person in history), and favorites button on the right.

if i hit menu i can click settings for a very limited menu, not what i am looking for.

i hate to compare, but i was a BB'r for a long time, last phone was storm 1.

on that i had the option i could set that would say

when hit phone button present dial pad
or
when hit phone button present call history
or
when hit phone button present contacts

ALSO even if i did launch phone and had it preset to history i had 3 easy tabs on top to switch between the three

ALSO in history if i clicked a person entry (regardless if i called their mobile or work) it gave me a pop up and asked what number of theirs i wanted to call.

i flip flop between work and cell when calling my wife, on the eris if i click her in history it calls that number when i might want the other

did that make sense? i want more control over the phone app, the main app that makes a phone...well...a phone....ease of use and productivity are key here...

i have the hero, way mine works (im guessing same as the eris) is when i hit the call button, it brings up the dialer with the history/contacts behind them. you can use the dialer to dial, you want to go to history then hit the little grid button on the lower left that drops the dialer and you are now at your call history, if you want to go to contacts just give it a flick to scroll below history and there are the contacts. I like the way it works. and the choice to call their other number, you just press the little rolodex page icon button to the right of their name and it brings up their contact page and you can click on whatever number you want to. I do think that could be done with either a long press that pops up that contacts multiple numbers at the top of the current list of options it brings up, or by swiping side to side on that contacts name in the history to choose the number to call.

Default Shopping assistant

I would like an app that would take my shopping budget (Christmas) let me list all of the people I am going to buy for and keep track of each individual gift and it's cost and deduct that amount from my overall budget while keeping a running total on how much is spent on each individual. This would be very useful to have when shopping to keep tabs.

App that embeds a phone keypad on one of your home screens, so instead of having to open the phone app up, it's right there. (This would take up the home screen so that you couldn't put any other shortcuts on there, but I'm fine with that!)

I didn't read everyone's so sorry if it's been said.
How about an app that is a mini music studio. Maybe four tracks you can record. All done individually with an equalizer available on screen after the recording of each track. Then listen to it as one song.
Sing, play guitar, clap, play the spoons, whatever. Save as a ring tone, upload, or save for later so you don't forget something you wrote at 2 am.
Have a website for the app where everyone can upload their songs, have contests...

I have just got my first android phone, the Eris from Verizon (I wanted the droid but I couldn't stand the keyboard). My last phone was a jailbroken iPhone 3Gs and there were so many things I got used to doing on that phone that I can not find a way to do on my Eris.

The most useful was having my calendar on my lockscreen. I have searched the android market, these forums, and on google but can not find a way to do this. This is only one of many things I did on my iPhone that I miss being able to do.

If anyone knows how to do this or any other advice from someone who has switched from a jailbroken iPhone to android please PM me. But please only people from a jailbroken iPhone, if you had a iPhone and did not jailbreak you have no idea the power of the phone you were missing out on.

You may want to check out our Executive Assistant (Appventive) app. It not only provides Calendar on the lock screen, but also gmail, sms, missed calls, voicemail, rss feeds, as well as hosting your favorite widgets (this app even made it to the finals of the Android Developers Challenge! :-).

Cheers,
Steve

This looks like exactly what I want. I opened the link, read over it, searched the market for Appventive, but it wasn't there. There was 2 apps by Appventive but not executive assistant. I am on 1.5 on the HTC Droid Eris, but the site said it was for any android phone so that shouldn't matter. Any advice?

I hope that 2 apps become available soon:

1) A sound equalizer app. I want to choose different presets depending on the music I am listening to. Even though the original sound of a song might be what the artist envisioned, I would like to have the option of enhancing certain ranges.

2) A music player where I can skip to the next or previous song without having to unlock the phone. Perhaps holding down the volume up button to go to the next song, and holding the volume down button to go to the previous. Maybe holding the camera button can act as a pause button.

That's strange. They *should* show up. But, you can also purchase it (for currently just 99 cents) at SlideME | Android Community and Application Marketplace

Which apps were you able to see in the Android Market?

Only "Group Ringtones" and "Aviation Weather from NOAA/NWS" were found in the search.

There must be a problem with the Market app, at least on the Eris. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

If you do end up installing Executive Assistant, please let me know what you think (our email address is in MENU/About & What's new).

If anyone else has trouble seeing our apps, please let me know. Currently, there should be a total of 7: Motion & Sound Alarm, ICE: In Case of Emergency, Executive Assistant, Group Ringtones, Aircraft Weight & Balance (1 paid & 1 trial), and Aviation Weather from NOAA/NWS.

Thanks again,
Steve

sorry if its been said already, but how about an app that actually does t9 the way a phone with a regular keypad does it. I've tried I think two or three keyboard apps and none of them do it 100% right.

you talking about how to type a word like "mine" you type 6-4-6-3 instead of
6-4/4/4-6/6-3/3?

if so, how could you get anything like that on an android. every android phone out has a physical or virtual qwerty right?

no button has 3 letters assigned to it so how would it work?

There are virtual T9 keyboards available that show up as a regular phone numberpad with the letters on it to do T9. I've tried 2 or 3 for my Droid, but like the OP said, none of them really emulate T9 mode on a physical keyboard.

What I'd like to see in a T9 keyboard:
- A logical dictionary. One of the ones I tried (don't remember which one) would pop up a random combination of letters or words that exist but aren't as common as other words with the same key sequence, and you had to select the correct word from a list.

- Instead of having to select the correct word from a list, I'd LOVE a "Next" button (on my old phone, the LG Chocolate 3, this was the 0 key) so that I can just hit that to get to the next word. I text a LOT, and with T9 on my old phone, for most words, I knew how many times I had to click next to get to the word I wanted (for example, type 6-3 would give me "of", whereas 6-3-0 would give me "me".) It was fast fast fast that way. It's frustrating not to have that on a virtual keyboard, especially when it's so easy to accidentally click the wrong word when you're trying to select one from a list.

- Ability to easily switch to ABC or QWERTY mode to enter unfamiliar words and have them added to the dictionary. I think only one (or maybe none) of the keyboards I tried had this. And one was even worse--my workaround for typing an unfamiliar word was to start typing another word with those same letters, hit space after I got the letter I wanted, then delete the characters that weren't part of what I wanted. One keyboard wouldn't even let me do that, so I couldn't type ANY unfamiliar words! Seriously, how do you not think about that?

-Have the 1 key be a rotating list of symbols, based on common use. For example, a period would come first, comma second, !, ?, etc. And if you press 1 multiple times, it'll make different emoticons: :-) ;-) :-/ :-( etc. Also, make it so that a long-press on the #1 key will pop up a screen with more symbols in it.

I'm sure there are probably other things, but these are my main frustrations. I really love my Droid, but it's my first smartphone, and the reason I held out so long to get one was because I hate using qwerty on a phone, and I prefer a tactile keypad. Because I love the Droid I'll use the virtual keypad, but I really miss T9. I use ShapeWriter now, which is better than straight qwerty, but I'd gladly pay that same $10 for a truly functional T9 keypad that replicates that of one on a physical phone.

what I dont understand though is that, if you have a full landscape qwerty, hardware or software, why youd want a numeric keypad to bust out a text message. ONLY reason I can see it being nice is in portrait mode for one hand so that instead of 10 keys wide its 3 keys wide and should be harder to hit the wrong button. but ONLY time I can think of one handed typing being better than 2 handed on a full qwerty is when driving. and I know when people I ride with start texting they dont drive near as well as when they arent texting. when I have a phone with a hardware numeric keypad on front I can do most of the text not even looking at the screen, and I usually turn off T9 so that I KNOW what letters Im inputting and not guessing what word is coming up first.

but on a touch screen, you cant lightly follow the keys with your finger to be positive where your at and then hit the key, so I still think youd be looking at the phone ALOT with a T9 touch screen numeric keypad.

Its all in what your used to, I've had a t9 keyboard since I first started texting so I am incredibly fast at it. I've avoided getting a QWERTY keyboard for as long as possible just because I don't like them. Its all a preference. And I can text with t9 on and not have to look at the screen because I have muscle memory for the next key, which puts in the word that I want. (sad I know)

Exactly this, right down to the part about avoiding qwerty as long as possible.

Another feature I'd like to see in a T9 app: typing don and then hitting the 1 key and then t turns the word into don't. None of the apps I tried did that. Seems so obvious.

I know this is nothing original, but I would pay vast sums of money for a decent app that allows me to watch xvid/divx AVI videos on my Droid.

Default Public Transportation Info w/ GPS Info

Living in San Francisco, I access live bus schedule times a lot. However, it usually takes awhile to search through to find the bus route and stop I need info for.

Since the phone has GPS, an application that could display the local stops close to my location would be a great integration of both web and GPS information.

Be great if we had an app that synced with Quicken Desktop.

I know the computer version of Google Maps shows bus stops and times--have you checked to see if the Android version does that? (I haven't looked...)

I want a widget app that displays all your new sms and mms messages on the homescreen that is wide enough to be able to read them and has the contacts picture with it. I have downloaded 2 of them off the market but they dont sync the contacts pictures which come from facebook and one of them is too small and some buttons overlap the text. i am using a droid so i dont know if that has anything to do with it.

Default Home/business inventory app

Ok here is my idea for an app. Ok most people keep their pantry stockpiled with various food items. This app would help organize and keep an inventory of those items. Basically after you have organized your pantry. You take a picture of the area and then you are able to tag each item location giving you a basic map of your pantry. Prior to your next shopping trip you are able to quickly make a note of items that you need to replenish. Not only would it work for your pantry. it would also work for your refridgerator, office supply closet, if you do alot of camping like my self you could map out your camping gear so that you dont forget to bring important supplies.

Kind of the wrong place, but ties in.
Since Blackberry and Android are both Java based how hard is it to deconstruct the blackberry apps and reformat them for android ??
The base language is the same, right? It is just laid out differently (not so much with the storm, being the same size, kind of) and run it through a different compiler.
