It sure is an improvement over the slide rule days when I was in school.

Today is the "official storybook app" for How To Train Your Dragon 2. Reviews are very positive, if a 40MB storybook app is your thing. One notable plus is that it runs just fine offline, and it's also got the "more apps" locked behind a slightly toddler-proof "when were you born" screen. Not for me, but if you're looking for a picture "book" for your Fire, it sounds pretty good. (And normally $3, so maybe worth sticking in your back pocket.)

Saw that and it just wasn't my genre of game. Maybe some that downloaded it could give an opinion.

Today's FAOTD is a "roguelike" game called "Hack Slash Loot". It's not getting good reviews, because they didn't do a very good job of translating the 8-bit feel into an Android app.

Today is "Giraffe's Preschool Playground". I'm not even going to click through for more details... if that's the sort of game you want, you're probably already downloading it.

Should be careful with this one since it is for preschoolers. The option button is more prevalent than the start button and it takes them to the internet. Plus it has analytics. No big deal for adults, but 3 yr olds?

Today's FAOTD is a pipe shuffle game that has few permissions, but will bug you to rate it until you give up and comply. Consensus seems to be "could be better".

Today's FAOTD looks good: Handy Photo. It's big but can be moved to the SD card.

Have you tried it? I was wondering if it will edit pictures that are already in your gallery, or if you have to use it to take the picture in the first place.

Worth mentioning that I was finally able to switch to Google play version of SwiftKey by signing into SwiftKey cloud and backing settings up. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled from play store, once I signed in SwiftKey gave me the premium themes for being a loyal member.

SwiftKey was *one* of the last apps I still needed amazon app store for...

When you all "purchase" the free app of the day, does it still download it, then ask you to approve permissions and give you the option to cancel at that point or does it purchase, download and install with 1 click?

I had a Galaxy S3 where it let me cancel after the download, but prior to the install, but with my LG G3, it's all 1 process, which I don't like. I'm not sure how it could work differently on different phones.

I wonder if that is a function of their latest version update.

I don't think so as the pre-installed version 9 worked that way too.

Does it work this way for anyone else or it always asks before installing?

I just downloaded today's FAOTD, Word Games Pack. It did not ask to approve permissions, it goes straight to Install. It does not appear on my list of downloaded Apps. Could it have to do with Kit-Kat?

What phone do you have? LG G3?

I have kitkat on my Samsung GS3 and it asks to approve permissions.

Amazon actually has phone support for the appstore and I called and spoke to someone who understood the issue and opened a ticket with engineering.

Will post if I hear back.

I bet this is just some sort of bug in how the appstore works with the G3 and that they can fix this with an update.

No phone, just a Sony Experia Table Z. This doesn't sound like a device issue. BTW Google Play has an App Of The Day as well. They ask you to accept the permissions before you download.

Android Giveaway of the Day

Start with that or go to Google Play and search for App Of The Day. I get a notification on the task bar of the tablet whenever there is a new one. Usually a couple a day.

That sounds like it's not so much a "Google gives away a free app like Amazon" as it does a "Some third party spams your notification bar with yet another ad".

No, these are actual paid apps for free and you have to download them from the Google Play store.

But it's not Google giving them away, right?

Meanwhile in the Amazon [sfx: jungle noises], the FAOTD is "Shuttle+ Music Player", which describes itself as a lightweight music player (I guess 6.3MB is light these days). Only 22 reviews, mostly positive, though it's described as "the same as the stock app, but with adware (Google Mobile Ads)". It sounds like the ads are disabled in the paid app (there's a free app too).

If you scroll across the top in the Amazon Appstore, you'll see that, today and tomorrow, they're giving away $100 worth of apps. Some of these, I'm sure, are crapps (crappy apps).

Thanks for the update - I'd have missed it this time and last time if it weren't for this thread!

I see some familiar apps. "Fraction Calculator Plus" is a lot of fun, especially on a tablet. I downloaded "Ultimate Guitar Tabs and Tools" but never used it. "Little Piano (Pro)" was pretty useless, as I recall - certainly not worth the $6 cover price.

For my new phone (a Moto X, so it'll actually run some things), I'm going to grab "Photo Editor +", "MathsApp Graphing Calculator", and the Fraction Calculator (even though it'll be tiny on my phone).

If you go to GP you can download an App Of The Day app. Should be easy to find. The link is for Giveaway Of The Day for the PC. Every day they offer a free software program.

the free apps in the Amazon app are mostly rubish. I simply forgot it and just pay for what I really want to use and using the google play store.

I hope there are more people thinking like me.

Considering the short amount of time I spend playing games on the tablet, that is probably the best idea. I like platformers and there do not seem to be many out there.

I do read a lot on the tablet and get a lot of free or $.99 books on BookBub.

While I would not debate that with anyone. I have downloaded a few that for me are useful. Muscle trigger, universal breathing, Audubon mammals, mini piano. Every once in a while. They have something useful. In between the rubish and the useful ones. I keep the store frozen. Only thaw it when I want to use one of these or to see what todays app is.

So years later I have a need for one of the FAOTD apps I 'bought' and need to install the Amazon store. Does anyone know if I install it if it's going to try to install dozens of apps that I bought or if I can install the Amazon store, select the one app I need and install just that one app w/o having to install anything else? I know not the perfect place to ask but figured you guys would probably know and it's not like it will be a lengthy discussion and could be useful info for others who are watching this thread who may have the same question.

Thanks!

You can easily just install the 1 app you want. Keep an eye on the permissions though. Amazon appstore sometimes has the same app as in Google Play, but with more permissions requested.

What app did you find you needed?

Yeah, permissions don't seem to matter these days. I've got a Redbox app that sends me spam notifications regularly & I unchecked the box to allow notifications as I never need them from this app & it mysteriously checks the box itself and sends another notification hours later. I checked the permissions and I see nothing that would allow it to have control over it's own settings. Amazing.

I digress.

I got a Chromecast last night to stream some video files we have that the Xbox/WMC/PC combo don't like. I can stream them on my phone w/o issue. The plan is to use the full version of Plex that I got to accomplish this via my Chromecast for files that don't play nice w/the Microsoft environment. What I've read is that Plex can do this w/ease so I'm wanting to get it on my phone now to test out. On a side note, I'm amazed by how few apps are Chromecast enabled now that I have one. I figured it would be more by now since it's been out for quite a while in tech terms.

The problem is that the few in the list that I use I could send to my TV using my Xboxes already. YouTube for instance is one that I use to search videos while one plays and then send it to my TVs so doing it on a Chromecast doesn't do me much good. I thought it would be cool if the stock gallery did to do a slideshow for people of like trips & such but it's not an option. I also use Tune In to stream radio stations and that one also doesn't. None of my video players will allow it either. Not a big deal really just surprised there isn't more by now is all. If it doesn't jive with Plex the way I hope it will I will probably just return it as I doubt I'll use it if I can't use it for that purpose. If we can finally stream some MKV's of TV shows & such we have that stutter streaming on the Xbox then it will be worth it's weight in gold to us as we have several TV series that have stalled due to certain MKV's that don't want to cooperate. I even recently did a fresh install of the OS with some other changes to try to combat this issue w/o any luck. $30 and a free Plex app could be the answer to all of our woes.

8/16/14- Free App Of The Day is Servers Ultimate Pro. This could be a worthy add for some of the more tech savvy members.

Dang, I would have grabbed that just to play with it. It sounds like it would be worth the $9 pricetag if you could use the features. Running a website from your phone... now that's a great way to use up your data plan! 1) run website from phone 2) get Slashdotted 3) ??? 4) Profit!

Today's app (oops, in 30 minutes it may be yesterday's) is "Camping Checklist", which lets you pay a buck for someone else's idea of the best camping trip evar.

I thought that Camping Checklist was one of the weirder ones they offered.

That one shows up as expired. They change a couple times a day. You never know what is going to show up!

You thought the camping checklist was goofy? Today's FAOTD is a tribute to last year's most overdone meme... a "Keep Calm And (fill in the blank)" generator. I feel like I got to the meeting late and all that's left is the grounds at the bottom of the coffee pot. :/

Really, you wonder where they get these. I do not need an app to Keep Calm and Drink Beer.
