I got Shazam for free when it was available, then I downloaded Soundhound today to compare the two and I like Shazam a lot better. Seems simpler and easy to use and more user-friendly.
Just my 2 cents, if anyone is debating between the two.
Here's a problem I'm having with the Amazon Appstore experience.
When you install an app from Amazon, the regular market isn't aware of it. So when updates come you won't be able to update them there. This also confuses appbrain as it shows an update for Soundhound Infinity being available but I can't update it from the standard market because it doesn't think I own it and Amazon doesn't show an update.
Also I ended up with two Shazams and two Soundhounds and had to figure out which was which to delete the old ones. Easiest way was to go to the standard market and see which one it said was installed. And somehow I got the free Swiftkey in Amazon and I don't remember picking that since I already own the paid version. Amazon won't let me remove it from the install queue. If it wasn't for the freebie apps, I probably wouldn't even use the Amazon system.
Appbrain does seem to pickup on all the apps on the phone, not just the official market ones. When I do an app sync in Appbrain on my EVO, all the apps show up. I don't know what would happen if I had to restore all my apps from there though.
Basically Amazon is acting like a drug dealer, giving you free samples so you'll be hooked whether you like it or not.

The Following User Says Thank You to NicksGarage For This Useful Post:
It says this one will detect huming or singing, Shazam doesn't do that. I also like how it gives you the lyrics. I may have to get this one. So they both refer you back to amazon for purchase of song.
For those asking about the dev getting paid for the free app. The agreement is that for every download of an app Amazon will guarentee the dev at least 20% of the "list price" set by the dev. So for a $5 app the Dev that we download for free amazon will pay the dev $1. Now for every app they sell for more than 20% of the list price they will take 30% of the sale or the difference between 20% list and the sale price whichever is less, this is the same amount google will take from devs when someone buys an app on the market.
As for updates, I believe there will be updates available in the amazon app store, it just doesn't allow the dev to push the updates as quickly as amazon must screen the app prior to making it available.
I'm trying to download the app store from my phone through the Amazon app itself and when I click on the appropriate link it just sends me to a blank screen. Can I not do it this way, do I have to use a cpu to download it?

You need to download the Amazon app store app from amazon, if you were on the normal amazon app it would not work.
I think you can do it from your phone. Just go to amazon and put your phone # or email address in the app store box on the website they will send you a link to get the app

I haven't seen this on this particular App, but there is a bug in the Java which returns a NULL pointer instead of an exception if a fetch fails - which can happen a lot more over 3G than WiFi - and this crashes some Apps. So if you notice this happening more on 3G than WiFi, tell them to work round this.
Otherwise, I can't help you! But report the bug if you can, as then they get a stack trace.
If I buy an app from the appstore today and delete it tomorrow, will it show up in the market as being purchased, or will it be as if I never "bought" it?
I got the free app today already tested it out. I'm liking this one better than Shazam. It does more, I like the widget and lyrics page and cool to see popular searches by others. So.far its been spot accurate. I can't believe I got it free and it cost $5.00.

I don't mind waiting if amazon is screening apps. Better to wait and get a update or app that is malware free. Amazon reputation is on the line here.

Yeah I agree

Everything I have seen shows that once you install a free paid app under the promotion it will show up under "my apps" within the amazon app store, if you uninstall it and wish to reinstall it later you would be able to do so by going to "my apps" Amazon does reserve the right to limit downloads of apps so I assume if they notice you are activating 10 different devices at once and downloading apps to all of them they may do something.

You get updates through the Amazon App
Click Menu > My Apps > Update available ... If there are updates you can download them or else it will say "No apps to update"

When your in the app store on your phone is there a way to prompt you before it downloads. I'm always afraid I'm going to hit the buy app button accidentally. I signed on my pc and went to my apps then 1 click but it only shows my last 4 digits of my cc#. I don't see a button for phone settings.

Part of the ToS is you agree to have 1 click turned on, they also have no refund policy, once purchased it is yours even if you did not intend to. Now you may be able to stop the download and contact amazon they may take that into account but likely they would not. I would like them to set up some sort of verification as well.

The bigger issue isn't malware but all the beta junkware that's on the market. Google can take out the malware after the fact but anyone can post a buggy Hello World app and google will still accept it. That makes Market seem more like a flea market than a real store.

How many people would be willing to pay $25 to publish a stupid hello world example app...searches the market...oh nevermind
I was a little pissed at myself for missing the boat on Shazam Encore because I did not install Amazon App Store until the next day ... now, I am glad I missed it. Had I installed Encore, I probably would not have tried Soundhound Infinity today. Infinity is great! Its quicker than Shazam and seems to do a better job of finding obscure music.

I wish they would put a prompt that pops up "Are you sure you want to download this app?" Touch screens are so sensitive that you have to be careful. That is my only gripe with the Amazon App Store.

I was so exicted about this new market having read about it here I downloaded it straight away.. signed in. Downloaded shazaam.. well I tried.
Sadly it's not avaiable in the UK - clearly not part of the plan.
Big mistake in my opinion.. i hope their market fails.
Stragely the omitted to mention this on the press release..
SEATTLE, March 22, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) – Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) ...we’re aiming to give customers a refreshing app shopping experience.”
“The Android platform’s openness provides a great opportunity to reach new customers,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio, the maker of Angry Birds.

I ran into this problem updating. AppBrain shows there is an update for Soundhound Inf. I went to update and it shows I have to pay for it, obviously because I got the app through Amazon. But I went to amazon's site and it shows no updates are available.
Free is nice, but having to update through 2 services is going to make me question whether "free" is worth it.

Small price to pay for free. It's not like these apps roll out massive updates all the time. I don't even update regularly. Maybe once or twice a month.

What would make you think google would let you update it? If google sees you have the app and their records show you did not buy it from them as far as they know you pirated the app

True. I am just type A to keep them updated. I don't see my amazon list of software growing...and I realized this early this morning. It is what I get for thinking without a good dosage of caffeine.

I only have 3/11 apps from the Amazon Market installed, but I purchase/download them when they are available for free if I ever have the desire to use them in the future. I'm sure they will get updated on the Amazon Market too, but because of the policies (similar to the iOS appstore) the updates will probably take longer to go into effect.

You also need to consider this when it comes to updates:

It compares all the apps you have installed on the phone regardless of where you acquired it, and compares it to the database they build off of the Market. The same thing happens if you manually install an app you got directly from the dev/publisher.
Appbrain has always been flaky when monitoring app versions. So what you're seeing is Appbrain not being able to differentiate the package you have installed via Amazon when it compares it to the Market version. They may be the same actual version, but if the package date or build numbers differ, Appbrain hasn't a clue.
I dumped Appbrain ages ago.
[edit]If you aren't using Appbrain, then the only explanation would be that you installed the Amazon version over an existing Market version, and the Market still assumes you have their package installed. When the package doesn't match, it assumes you've got an old version.

Sometimes you naively update a free app and BOOM! it's now limited in so many ways to force you to get the paid version.

Which is not the case with the apps from the Amazon appstore, as they are the paid versions on sale. This argument is now going in circles, particulalry because of what oOMavrikOo said:

Aside from that, if there are issues or improvements to a app, the dev will have to update it to keep the current customers happy and get new ones coming in. These apps are only on sale for a day, that is not going to prevent people from buying them. New people get Android phones all the time. Lots of people never look at forums like these. Others don;t check the free apps every single day. There is still revenue to be made so updates are necessary.

Looks like I am the only one to have problems with Amazon apps. I have an issue with Shazam and now Weatherbug. I download it and when I launch it, it FC's and tells me:
Amazon Appstore: unknown error.
An error occured. Please download theis app again form the Amazon Appstore
I have re-downloaded and it still does the same thing. I am not having problems with Rio and Soundhound.

Loving the free apps. A couple of them were apps where I was using the free version and now have upgraded to the pay version for free.
I'm assuming that if I ever have to wipe my phone, I can restore these apps using Titanium or MyBackupRoot in the same fashion as my google market apps, right?
I guess they won't auto load like the google market apps do though. But, that's not a big deal, I'd probably prefer they don't and restore with my backups anyhow.
