Could someone please provide a link to viber in the android Market as I simply cannot find it - tried several times using their search.
It's still in beta so has not been released too the market yet. Those of us who do have it had to sign up to a waiting list and wait a few weeks for an invite before downloading the apk directly from the developers.
Hopefully they'll get the beta finished up and put the app in the market soon.
Our waiting list is long, so a little more patience is needed
We are considering to make the Beta version public these days, but no announcements yet. We will keep you posted.
Yes I have, when I call someone (through the stock contacts app) who has viber it brings up the android preferences prompt with the dialer and viber (also skype in my case) as options.
Though there doesn't seem to be anything in the contact's info showing that they have viber. You just find out when you try to call.
Hi again,
A few more questions I need regarding this issue:
1. I still didn't quite understand just where you are experiencing the issue. Please try explaining again more specifically.
2. Please provide me with the exact version of device and Android OS you have.
3. If you can, please add a small screenshot of the problematic page.
We have been working hard in the past several weeks on a first version of Viber on Blackberry, and we are now excited to give you a first look.
You can find it here: Viber's Photos - Wall Photos | Facebook
In addition, I'd like to announce that we are at the very final stages of the closed-group Beta project, and will soon make the Beta version public!
For more info feel free to ask me here and make sure you follow us on Facebook: Viber | Facebook
How is Viber different/better from GrooveIP? I started using it and am fairly happy. Trying to decide if I should put my name your "the list".
I agree. GrooveIP works great and you can call any phone, they don't need to have Viber installed. I don't really see the point of Viber if you have a Google Voice number and GrooveIP.
I'm excited to announce that our Beta version of Viber-for-Android is FINALLY public, and now appears in Market for all to download!
The version itself is slightly more updated than the previous one (mostly bug fixes), so we highly recommend everyone to download and install it.
Important: those of you who were testing our Beta (after getting the invitations) will have to uninstall Viber, and only then install the Market version. Thank you!
As usual, I'll be here for your questions, suggestions, bug reports or anything else really
Thanks,
Viber.

Viber is now here for Android! This is VoIP app is the best and easiest way to stay in touch with your friends and family around the world! NOTE this app requires and active data connection or WiFi.
Viber doesn't show in the first results, so you may have to scroll a bit.
Made my first Viber call, and got a nice clear line.
It does not tell you who is online till you try to call or SMS. You will find out that they are not online when you try to call and can than call them via GSM, or get a notification that the message you are sending is pending.
I see the point though of not polling to see who is online. That would eat data and battery.
Installed the new Viber app today from the Market. I tried to add a contact and then invite them to Viber by using the invite option, but Viber then crashed completely. After this it just crashes every time I try and use it. When sync is on I get some message saying 'force close' or 'cancel'. Also the 'contacts' screen becomes empty. Had to uninstall. I am using Gingerbread 2.3.4 software on Galaxy S.

Why is this app here? What I'm getting at, is, what's in it for Viber Media? They're not doing this for charity's sake, they're in it to make money, and good for them, but how are they going about that?

Have you ever thought that this app could be developed by an enthusiast who enjoys designing apps as a hobby in his/her spare time? Not everyone designs apps just for profit, thank god. Android now has more free apps than iPhone's app store.

This kind of app which requires back-end support, it is rather unlikely. There is a high carrying cost to maintaining the service provided by this app.
I guess they will offer lower priced paid long distance calls to landline and other non-Viber users. At least this is what Fring and Tango do.
Hi all,
Sorry for the late response. Here are answers for your questions:
@ral - if it's people from your country, you can save their numbers either with or without country code. If it's people from a different country, then you need the country code.
Also, you can tell if someone's online if you call them and it says "Ringing.." (meaning it's literally ringing on the other side) and not just "Calling.."
@formidible - about your crash problems - are you using a customized ROM by any chance?
@gilbequick - why is Viber free?
For now, Viber's focus is on adding platforms, adding features (such as text messages) and improving overall system performance. At the same time, we are working on additional future premium services that will generate revenues. The basic Viber service - Viber to Viber phone calls and text messages - will ALWAYS be free.
@bu995 - we are aware of the problem of some of our users with battery drain, and we're investigating this issue right now.
A new version of Viber for Android has just been released: 2.0.1
What's new?
- "Exit" button. Note that shutting Viber off may result in unavailability to receive calls and texts.
- Important features, such as Proximity Sensor, are now enabled by default.
- Viber-contacts identification mechanism was improved.
- Many other bug fixes.
Please find the new version in Market. We'd love to hear your feedback!
Exit button does not seem to work all the time, after shutting down sometimes it connects again. I think this might happen when it cannot send the "exit" signal to the Viber server, and than it connects again.

The "Exit" button has nothing to do with being connected to the internet or not. It's client only, and simply closes Viber itself on your Android (no confirmation from server needed).
Please remove Viber, and reinstall it from Market and see if the problem persists. Also - see if you can identify a specific pattern for this problem (otherwise I won't be able to repeat it here in the lab).
I'm excited to announce that according to preliminary results, it seems as though we managed to find and fix the collision problem of Viber with CM7 and MIUI ROMs (and possible the rest as well)
Both these ROMs "change" the device's identity (virtually, of course), preventing Viber from adapting itself correctly to the device's microphone configuration. This is why most of you with ROMs experienced the one-side audio issue.
Anyway - we are working on adding a fix to the new version that will hopefully be officially released next week to Market.
Updates soon,
Viber.

I downloaded Viber yesterday and it's great! Called my family overseas with no problem. Only suggestions I have, is being able to set personal sound notifications and ring tones. Also for SMS or MMS, can we get an update to have the virtual keyboard rotate with the phone? that would be great.

All these features are planned:
1. Sending MMS and keyboard on landscape mode will be available in version 2.1 that will hopefully be released in a few months.
2. Custom ringtone option will also be available in the future.

If you mean Viber's purple icon at the top - we have removed it in our latest Market version, but it can be enabled again in Viber's settings.
Please search for it there, and if you still don't find it - let me know.
Uninstalled and re-installed Viber. The problem of being unable to exit got worse. When I press "Exit" the notification icon disappears, than appears again after a second, and connects again. After six tries I tired Forced Stop and it closed
Not a deal breaker. Battery use seems to be minimal.

HTC Desire HD, Stock HTC Android 2.3.3
We haven't gotten this complaint yet since we release the new version with the "Exit" button... It's strange.
Are you sure it's not a custom ROM or another app that's colliding with Viber, causing this issue?
And by the way - you can disable the notification icon in Viber's settings.
Hi all,
Viber 2.0.2 has just been released to Market!
What's new?
- Viber is back on Market for HTC Wildfire and HTC Hero users. However, note that due to immanent compatibility problems, Viber might not work 100% smoothly. We're working hard to improve these problems.
- After hard work, as promised, Viber now supports *some* of the famous custom Android ROMs, such as CM7 and MIUI. We need your feedback in order to make sure the major problems with these ROMs are now resolved.
Please make sure you download the latest version.
As usual - for questions/technical issues feel free to contact me.
What device are you using? Which Android version?
Did you try rebooting your phone? Also, when you search for "Viber" in Market, did you scroll down all the way?

I am using Atrix 4g with wifi and 3g - when in screen lock, i get no ringtone - thus miss incoming calls.
I don't see any ringtone option. I have cancelled wifi sleep, but then my battery goes.
Do you have any help with the viber ring issue?
Can I call people who don't have Viber?
Yes, if the person you're calling doesn't have Viber, the call will be placed like regular call, but don't forget to invite your friends to Viber so your next call is free .
My question is, if I have Viber on my phone and I make a call to another person that does not have Viber the call will go through, BUT!!. Is the call on my end still going through Viber and the Internet or is it defaulting back to the normal cell phone operations and calling through the carriers cell network rather than 3G or WiFi?
I ask because it does not point this out, Some one who has Viber on their phone may mistakenly believe that even though the other person does not have Viber and their for is paying for their in call min that the Viber on their phone is circumventing the cell network and placing a free call on their end when in fact it has defaulted to normal cell phone operations and the user is racking up their min charges.
Can you please clear this up, I would like to try Viber but I want to know what will happen if that call goes through to a non Viber user.
Never mind, tried the app and the call quality is very poor.

@bhcjoe -
I'm a little confused... When you cancel WiFi sleep mode, does it work fine even when your phone is locked? Does it mean that WiFi goes to sleep immediately whenever your phone is locked?
@ral -
So the problem is solved now?
@androidfonefan -
When you call someone who doesn't have Viber, you'll be prompted a warning message explaining clearly that the call is going to be routed through your regular cellular company (just like a normal call that's initiated through your normal phone app). So it doesn't use up your data, it's just a normal call.
About the quality - please try to make a Viber call when both sides are on high-speed WiFi connections. The quality should be excellent, and use up Viber's full potential.
When screen is locked I don't get ring for incoming calls. I have wifi awake at all times (though if sleeping I believe the 3g should replace it). Maybe viber doesn't work with Motorola Atrix??
Still have the same problem. First it is intermittent, but sometimes when I turn Viber off it still restarts. Turning it off a second or third time does the trick. If it does not, I can Force Stop it (only had to do this once).
I have Viber on a HTC Desire HD with the stock ROM updated to the latest HTC officially released OS. If no one else is reporting the issue, no need to worry about it. Could be the way I set up my phone or something.
I turn it off here, since our 3G network can only support Viber in very few areas. In most, the call will drop, so I use it for WiFi communications only. That being said, it works better than Skype. I was able to make a 45 second call on Viber before being dropped, where Skype did not work at all.
@bhcjoe -
We haven't tested Viber on Atrix thoroughly yet (more popular devices are prioritized first) so there could be errors with it, but I must say we don't remember receiving a similar complaint from other Atrix users. Are you using a custom ROM or stock ROM?
Also, do all other apps with alerts upon similar events (for example - skype) work fine when your phone is locked?
@ral -
There is actually a known issue with some phones that Viber *occasionally* comes back to life after choosing to Exit it. We're working to fix it right now, and the issue will be solved in the next version we'll release to Market.
Hi my wife has a desire z on android 2.3.3 when she installed it on her phone she found that when exiting other apps on her phone it would reboot then if she went into another app upon exiting her phone would reboot again so she uninstalled viber and it has been fine just wondered if anyone else has had this issue.

Hmm.. we haven't encountered such complaint before (and to be frank - it doesn't sound like something that Viber could cause).
Is she using a custom ROM? Is it possible that any other app is causing a collision with Viber?

No just the standard uk vodafone 2.3 it only started happening after installing viber and stopped happening when she uninstalled it.
She is going to download it again and see if the rebooting problem comes back.
Will let you know.
