Hey so I just stumbled across this app for if you loose your phone, just like all of the others it offers the ability to find the location of a phone with enabled gps and wifi.
However unlike many free apps it also offers the ability to lock and wipe your phone. And what's more you can remotely install it, and control it via sms or an online interface...
Thing is this all sounds too good to be true for a free app, and I was wondering if anybody had used it and could reassure me as to its authenticity!
It's good, but I think it's not very useful for such tools. Because, most users will set a screen lock for their phone. So if I pick your phone, I can't use your phone at all, so I will do a factory reset fot it soon, such tool won't work at all. If user didn't set a screen lock, I will find your app in the desktop, and I will reset all too.

I don't think it's possible to remotely install an app.
Sure you can. If you go to the Android Market website on your PC (market.android.com), you can sign in, pick an app to install, and have it sent to your phone and it will install remotely. Did this many times with my Droid X when it was running Froyo, and just verified that it still works with Gingerbread.

It doesn't actually work for me through the website. I've tried. The only option I have for a phone is greyed out and I can't select it.
So it requires no action on the phone at all? No need to agree to the permissions or press OK or anything?
Still, I wouldn't trust it for a lost or stolen phone. If the phone is off or has no data connection, there would be no way to push the install.
I assume the remote install finishes just like any other remote install - point is you can remotely configure it as if you had the phone right there (supposedly). Yeah you can remotely install pretty much any app as long as your phone is linked to your google account. Just click install in the market place.
Prey is good however it doesn't offer the ability to wipe a phone remotely, which is the key thing I'm looking for at the moment - a last resort self destruct. So that if I know I'm not getting my phone back I can be sure that whoever has it doesn't also have all of my personal data.
As for lookout, well I dont really feel the need for anti-virus on my phone, so I feel like lookout is probably going to be a bit over the top. I'd prefer just an app that will let me remotely lock, wipe, display messages and let me find the phone - preferably without the need, but with the option, of a web based interface.
Lookout's Plan B is a different app than their AV, it's a remote wipe/lock thing that you remotely install via the usual Android Market I think -- though I cant imagine this fooling a moderately savy theif, though criminals tend to be dumb - so ya never know
