Default How to play music from a windows file share?

I have all my media stored on a stand-alone NAS box. It makes the files available as standard SMB file shares. Everything i own can access those, and has been able to for a decade. Except my new Acer Iconia A500 tablet!

I can view the files using ES File Explorer, but then i'd need to copy them to my phone to play them.

I am not willing to install software on the computers to supply the media to android. I shouldn't have to do that, and the files are on a standalone NAS box; I have no guarantee that a given computer would be on at any time.

I know i can use CIFSmanager to mount the SMB shares, but that requires rooting my tablet, which i'd rather not have to do if I can avoid it, and some people have said that it's difficult to actually play the songs conveniently afterwards...

Thanks

You can't click on them in the file manager to play them? I'm not aware of any music apps that can scan for music on a network share which is really what you're looking for.

What about a DLNA server? Assuming that there's an Android music app that supports DLNA.

I can play them through the file manager, but it's extremely awkward :-/

What is DLNA? My NAS drive is one of these : ineo which supports some form of media serving, but I'm not certain what kind. I remember hearing that there are multiple forms of media serving that are the same thing under multiple names, but I havn't followed the whole consumer electronics media stuff until now.

I've tried configuring it to use music serving, but i still can't see it from clear.fi, and there are so many apps out there, i have no idea which ones to try.

Help. I'm not used to not knowing what to do! If you told me to build a linux server and integrate it with the network, that I could do. But this new media-stuff is like greek to me!

Dr Azzy: Your NAS is UPNP, but not DLNA. You should go to the "search" link above(not the search box) and search for "streaming upnp nas". Maybe do the same on Appbrain. There seem to be some solutions for (non-DLNA) NAS boxes. Here's one...

Finally a UPNP player that works!
