Here’s a full explanation of how to transfer your SMSs from a Symbian Sony Ericsson P1i to an Android Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i.
You will need your old phone with USB cable, your new Android phone with USB cable, the installed PC suite application (PC companion -
Sony Ericsson - Support - Softwaredownloads - Detailed - Pccompanion - Xperia? X10) for your new Android phone. Then follow the next steps:
1. Download and install MyPhoneExplorer (MPE) from
FJ Software Development
2. Link your old P1i phone via USB and MPE should pick it up (otherwise go to settings and detect)
3. MPE should now list your contacts, messages (inbox, outbox, drafts, sent), calendar etc.
4. Download and install SMS converter from
Jonas Bark - MyPhoneExplorer SMS to Android Converter - Little utility to convert exported SMS from MyPhoneExplorer to Android
5. Create a folder where you place the smsconverter.exe file in (you can name the folder anything let’s say for e.g. SMSconvert)
6. In your INBOX delete all messages which are of a MMS or interactive mode type or where there is no date stamp
7. Select all your messages in MPE from the INBOX and rightclick and select ‘Export’
8. Export your Inbox messages from MPE as XML to the same folder ‘SMSconvert’.
9. It will request you to save the file – Save it as "mpe_sms.xml" and must be placed in the folder ‘SMSconvert’.
10. Select all your messages in MPE from the SENT or OUTBOX and rightclick and select ‘Export’
11. It will request you to save the file – Save it as "mpe_sms_sent.xml" and it must be placed in the folder ‘SMSconvert’
12. Start the converter .exe application
13. Click on the first button, then on the next button. It will create a file called "sms.xml".
14. In the meanwhile on your Experia phone ensure you have downloaded an ANDROID application called ASTRO file manager as well as SMS Backup and Restore (
Top 10 Free Android Apps for Xperia X10-Download Now Gadgets | Technology Simplified) OR download it directly from your phone using the ‘market’ application. It is free. In Xperia10 to get to ‘Market’ application, slide the screen to the left and you will see it.
15. Once you have Astro file manager installed, open it and go to preferences. Ensure that you have all the Toolbar options ticked by selecting ‘preferences’ and then ‘Toolbar preferences’. This will enable you to have the toolbar button ‘New Directory’.
16. Now link your Android Xperia phone via USB cable to your PC. It will request it to be mounted. Slide down the Xperia face with your finger from the top and a screen will appear.
17. Drag down the main face of your Xperia and mount the SD card by tapping on ‘USB connected’ – this will enable file exchange
18. Copy the “sms.xml” file from the folder ‘SMSconvert’ into the sdcard root drive (might be H: or G: or whatever) of the Android phone as shown on the PC file manager (using PC companion)
19. Now unmount the sdcard by sliding down the face of the Xperia from the top with your finger and tapping ‘Turn of USB storage’.
20. Re-start the Astro file manager app on your phone and from the toolbutton selection at the top slide across until you get new folder. Select ‘new folder’
21. Create a folder called “SMSBackupRestore” in the directory /sdcard
22. Using Astro file manager file moving or copy functions, move or copy the “sms.xml” from the root directory into “SMSBackupRestore”
23. Now go to the application SMS Backup & Restore, and select Restore Messages. It will ask you to confirm if it is “sms.xml” file and select ok. It will then take some time to restore the smss to your Messaging platform.
You can also try to download a better handscent SMS package which will enable you to see the sent and receive messages in a better format. I liked the old inbox and sent feature of my P1i but hey, it just takes a bit of getting used to. All the best.
