The Droid's calender is just fine for tracking appointments and jogger notes. I didn't realize that the "alarm", is a barely audible "ting" sound, only discernible in a silent environment.
Is there an app that will add a LOUD alarm (choice of my current ring-tones), so I can actually be notified of pre-set calender activity?

Why not just change the notification sound? I've got a train whistle on mine that sounds 5 minutes before a meeting, and the sound about blows my pants pocket off.

Go into main Settings/Sound & Display/Ringer Volume and change the slider on Notification volume. The calendar alarms are Notifications.
Also when you Edit Event from the calendar, make sure you have a Notification set otherwise no alarm will sound.
As an aside, I used Ringdroid to create my own ringtones and alarms.

"G", thanks for response and excellent suggestion about RingDroid. Downloaded it. What I am somehow missing, in scheduling an event for tomorrow AM (Sunday), running down the scheduling options, I saw no prompt to add a sound. It must be me. Where do I look for that?

I've never asked what phone you're using, so I may have made too many assumptions.
That said, on my Droid, when I schedule a new event, the very last option on the event screen, just above the "DONE" button, it says "REMINDERS." Reminders are the alarms that sound before your event time.
Perhaps you don't see that because you don't have a default reminder/notification time set. Go into your calendar, go into the menu, then MORE then click on "Default Reminder Time" and select something besides "None." I have mine set to 10 minutes. Then, every time you create a new event, an alarm will ring 10 minutes before the scheduled time. You can always change that, or add more reminders, when you set up the new event.

Gerry, thanks for your experience and savvy grasp of my plight! Somewhere between "RingDroid", and revisiting my scheduling set-up, I found a selected loud (office phone) ring in my choice for calendar reminders, and that's fixed my situation! Forums are only as beneficial as those who populate them. Thanks for everything Gerry. I'm certain to be back here again soon...smile.

I'm having real trouble with my new Desire calendar. I have an appalling memory and rely on my mobile to make sure that I'm where I should be when I should be. I expect my calendar alarm to alert me to an upcoming appointment, even if I've left it on the table in the next room. Something that just goes 'doing' once - however loudly - is no good to me. It surely must be possible to get a decent alarm for appointments, but I simply can't find out how to do it. Help!

Hi guys, G may i ask you how can you set a different alarm notification sound for the calendar reminders? I see only the default Android ones. tried copy/pasting in the notification(audio) folder by using astro folder browsing but system is not accepting. Is there a way to use your one mp3 as calendar reminder?

I want a wakeup alarm. I set an event in calendar some week or so in advance to wake my at 7:30 AM on the required day. The alarm should go off and "ring" and the phone vibrate for say 10 seconds, not just once as the notifications do and ring again say 5 minutes later and repeat for three times if not cancelled by me.
This is what I had on my Palm TX.
The "Clock" alarm is just that; cannot be set to just a certain event.
If the built in calendar does not have this facility is the an app that will add it?

I think I know what you're looking for, but let me clarify something first. The notification sound for calendar events is set within the calendar app. If an event has reminder(s) set, you will be notified ONCE per set reminder (you can have multiple reminders per event) using the sound and vibration settings from within the calendar app.
That said, what I think you're looking for is a repeating reminder that must be manually cancelled, that possibly uses a different sound than the normal reminder sound, and this should be configurable on a per-event basis. Does this sound right to you?
If so, I know that Tasker can do this. It's currently available off-Market only, from the developer here:
If this is all you want Tasker to do, it's going to be overkill for your purposes, but there are so many things you do with it I'm sure you would find other uses. Current off-Market price is GBP 3.50 (around $5) via Paypal / Google Checkout, but you can try it for 14 days BEFORE you buy it (as opposed to paying first and having to get a refund). Should you decide to give it a try, I'm sure any of us over at the Tasker forums would be happy to help you get started.
And no, I'm not the developer - just an enthusiastic beta tester.
On a side note: I think the lack of a built-in ability to have repeating alerts/alarms/reminder/notifications is a glaring omission on both Android and Blackberry devices (the only smartphones I have tried). Its absence is really the weak link in a world of near-instant delivery for SMS and email. OS developers need to realize that getting the message to the device is not enough - it has to get to the recipient. If they can't do that, getting it to the device is pointless.

Like you I cannot understand how such a basic requirement was left out of Calendar!
I have installed and am trying Nudnik app; have trouble in that I cannot seem to turn off the alarm without powering off phone; email sent to developer.
Tasker for Android
looks very comprehensive but on my first quick read through of the website could not see how it would integrate into Calendar so that I just setup my event in Calendar and Tasker plugin would add an alarm.
As you say maybe over the top for my needs but that would not stop me installing it if I would do what I want.
Is it as simple as I think i.e.. it acts as a plugin for Calendar?

Tasker does not integrate with the calendar UI at all. One of the many things Tasker can do is monitor your calendar for events, and when a matching event occurs, Tasker will do what you told it to.
You could for example, tell Tasker to look for events with a title of "Wake Me Up", and sound a repeating alarm when such an event starts. Then, any time you want to have your phone wake you up with the repeating alarm, just create a new calendar entry titled "Wake Me Up", and Tasker will do the rest.
You don't necessarily have to tie into the title of the calendar entry but that would be one way to do it.
In my case I use Tasker to set my phone to vibrate and silence the ringer during certain calendar entries (i.e. anything with "Meeting" or "Dr" in the title, or "vibrate" in the description.
But that would mean I would have to create two events:-
Wake Me Up
Visit Dentist
or each event would be in the form "Wake Me Up - Visit Dentist"; not so good when I set or unset alarms after having entered the event; circumstances do change which alters the need or not for an alarm.

I rely heavily on alarms and the stock calendar that comes with the incredible just wouldn't cut it. I use "Alarms" free from the Market. You can schedule something for any date/time and the alarm will pop up with the text note you write for the alarm and assign any sound you want to the alarm.
