Notsure Outlook/Exchange Phone number formatting

Just got my first Android phone (HTC Wildfire S), so I assume I'm missing something obvious, but...

I synced with my Exchange account at work. All my emails, calendar and contacts came across beautifully. However, all the phone numbers are in the format Outlook puts them in, e.g. +99 (09999) 999 9999. When I select one of these to dial it, my UK mobile carrier (O2) gives me a "number you have dialled is not recognised" error. I have to manually delete the + and () to make it work. This seems to happen because neither the Android native people app nor Touchdown have an "area code" or "country" field for phone numbers, they just put everything in one field.

Is there some way round this, or does anyone know of an app that will preserve these fields?

Thanks, Jim
