Default Blackberry, android crossplatform texting apps

So I have a friend who lives international, and she has a blackberry and I have an android. We're looking for a crossplatform application so we can text. Anybody got any ideas?
We already tried tiger text and whatsapp and kik messanger, and none of those worked out.

Trilian would work... in fact, why wouldn't you just use AIM or Yahoo or ICQ? You both install the app on your phones.. and message way. All of these can also be on a computer, so you could be sending messages from a laptop to your friends phone if you wanted.

The only problem is, I don't have unlimited data. I want an app that I don't have to be online 100% of the time to use.

Doesn't exist I'm afraid... .you need either a network (carrier) connection or a 3G/wifi connection to send messages (text or IM) to another phone.

no, you misunderstand. Things like aim require a 3g wifi data usage 100% of the time to keep me online. I'd prefer someething that didn't make me use so much data, because I don't have unlimited.

Not sure I'm picking up exactly what you are looking for? A messaging system that will pick up incoming messages without using a text plan or an data connection (be it wifi or 3G)?

You don't have to be online 100% either to use the AIMs... you can just "log on" and log off as you want.

yes exactly my point. I want something like textplus, that allows me to recieve text messages while not being like an im service.
Aim doesnt allow me to recieve messages when i'm offline. It requires i stay online to get messages, taking up a lot of data.
Textplus only uses data when refreshing and sending messages. I'm looking for something more like that.

If youre looking for something like that

I recommend you the app "WhatsApp" Its available on BB, Android, iOS. I have used it on my Nexus 1, and on my BB Pearl and its awesome. my coworkers use it on iOS as well and no complaints. its a great app and you dont have to sign in constantly like you requested. look into that.

Exclamation

Man! I came here to find a solution and suddenly I don't know how but this came up in my mind. Okay, the solution to the 'Not visible in Whatsapp contacts/doesn't exist' is that your friend's number is supposed to be in your Phone Contacts. Now see, this is really important because what Whatsapp does is it recognizes its contacts from your Phone's contacts. So, before you do anything, see that your friends contact details are stored on your Phone and then do a refresh in Whatsapp and your friend will appear in the contacts. Happy texting! Oh and yeah, related to your query that whether Whatsapp is free or not. It actually kind-of is. When you're not texting, you can just close it (Blackberry) or end task (android) or home-key it (iPhone). Later guys!
