Facebook Push Notification Fix. Try these simple steps!
Here you go guys... This is a tutorial on how to get "Push Notification" to your Android phones. Google won't do it - so someone else did. I'm not the Thread Author of this tutorial _ but I saw it, did it..and now it's working for me _ so - I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work for YOU. A big thanks goes to CCW 1134 {AC}

So let's set the table here. Facebook Push Notifications are the golden egg that we're all looking for. Well after reading this you can go obsess about something else...finally (I know I will). I have been beyond frustrated with the chaos that has surrounded this subject. I've spent way too many hours reading and reading then reading some more. I am proud to say that I finally cracked the elusive Facebook Push problem.
I switched from Verizon to Sprint last week (work decision) so I went from a Droid Incredible to a EVO 3D. I was hoping that my Push notification would work when I switched since they never had. To my dismay they did not. My daughter went from a BB Curve to the Motorola XPRT and her FB push notifications worked! She always would always say "Dad you're phone's not so Incredible now, is it?" So when I got my EVO 3D and it didn't work I really became obsessed. After comparing settings on both phones and Facebook settings I found the one anomaly. The list of authorized apps within Facebook (Account dropdown>Account Settings>Applications on the right side of the page) on the computer showed "Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones" on hers but not mine. It's so simple yet outside of the box. The key is BlackBerry permissions! I am willing to bet thateveryonewho hasworking notifications on Android came from a BlackBerry. Okay onto the good stuff.
- Find someone with a working BlackBerry. This could be a friend or any store that has activated demo phones. - Using the Facebook app on the BB log into your account and wait for your stuff to start appearing. I did not log into email or anything else, just FB. - After you see your News feed updated with your information simply log out. - Go into your FB settings on your Android phone and check the Notifications box. The refresh interval doesn't matter (it can even be set to Never). - Notifications should start appearing asyou get them (Comments, Wall Posts, Pokes, Likes, Messages, etc.)
I did notice a couple of things that I hope get improved in the notification process. Messages and Friend Requests have their own separate icons for notifications just as they always have. Comments, Wall Posts, , Tagging, Pokes and Likes all share the new notification icon thatyou will start seeing. Because of this if someone pokes you and then you get a comment or whatever, your Poke notification is gone (I'm assuming because the FB App doesn't officially support Poking yet therefore it doesn't know how to handle that notification) and won't know who poked you. Also if you should happen to click on the poke notification doesn't take you anywhere useful, just the list of notifications (for the same reasons listed in the previous sentence). This is a small sacrifice for now. If someone tags you in a post (I assume a picture will be the same way) you also will still get an email notification to whatever email you use. Just an FYI on that.
For the record I am on Sprint using a nonrooted HTC EVO 3D running 2.3.3 and Facebook is version 1.7.1 I do not believe the carrier, phone model, OS or Facebook version matter but I know there are those out there who want to know this type of stuff.
Sadly both of the BlackBerry's I tried last night gave me an error message when trying to access Facebook. Something along the lines of incorrect data plan which was odd considering both were using WiFi.
I'll try again as and when I find another BB in the wild.

Make sure the one you're using does have the BB FB app installed, and have good data connection.
Hmm, I'd like to try this, my dad has a blackberry however, I've never used a blackberry before. Where do I get apps downloaded on it? My dad's blackberry is a work phone so is it possible that I may not be able to do this due to restrictions he may have?

If he doesn't have the blackberry app installed on his device, then just type in Facebook in the search browser, follow steps to installed on device. Open the FB app and sign into your FB account -- let the news feed load then sign out. And follow additional steps above.

Ok Got all the way to the sign out part... Where is the sign off button?? I ended up just "deleting" the app from it's homescreen or application drawer, whatever it's called and hopefully that took off my info off of it. It asked me to restart it for complete deletion but I was only able to just turn it off because it's password protected and idk the password.
I did manage to try this the other day. I successfully logged in on a friends Blackberry and loaded up the news feed, after which I signed out. However I still do not receive notifications unless I have the Facebook app open on my phone, if the Facebook app is not open then I do not receive any notifications what so ever.
Now I do not want to put anyone else off of trying this as from what I have seen on the internet it does seem to work for a lot of people however it unfortunately this did not work for me.

Signing out is a little bit tricky on the blackberry app. I can't remember exactly where it is now, because I don't have a BB phone with me right now. However, I assure you it is there - play around the settings and you'll eventually find it.

If you're not getting 'push notification' after following the steps provided, then try one of two troubleshooting tips: 1)Delete data on the Android Facebook app. 2) Make sure notification is enabled on your Facebook account(notification - settings). Do this from the full version of Facebook. By default Facebook has set notification to only the ones they think are important to us. So this might be the reason why you're not being notified. 3) Last resort, you could Uninstall and reinstall the FB application... to see if that fix the problem.
If you don't have access to a BB, then follow this guide which lets you run RIM's BB emulator on your PC. This is the method I used and was getting notifications before i'd even finished uninstalling the emulator after I was done with it.

I'm going to give this method a go later tonight, fingers crossed

This should come in handy to a lot of people.
Thanks for posting. . Ps. If for any reason you stop getting "push notification," then redo the whole process all over again.
It would appear that this has now worked for me, at least I am receiving notifications when people are commenting on or liking my statuses so that is definitely something that was not happening before.

Many thanks guys.
If you're seeing a white square notification box...then there's no doubt that you are now getting "push notification' to your Android device.

Whats funny seeing how this has worked for people and that PN's work on BB's, is the Facebook app for BB's isnt even developed by Facebook like the Android app is!
After seeing this posted elsewhere on the net, i tried it but with a friend's iPhone after a few people said it worked that way as well. I can confirmation it also works with the iPhone, at least it did for me. I signed in on my friends iPhone and notifications started pushing the my android phone finally. It never worked on my old droid or my Xoom, but after signing in on theiphone and signing back out, they come to both my Xoom and my new Rezound. I presume my Droid would be the same asthisnt a devicethingbut a facebook and android problem.
It's sad that this works--using non-Android devices to fix a problem on facebook/Android.
It's worth noting that I have an ipod touch running iOS 5that I got a week ago and have signed into it on fb and gotten pushnotifications on it, butthat didn't make it work from my android phone, butsigning inon the iPhone made the notifications start working.
Did this fix with the emulator. The only thing is that the BB app doesn't show up on FB for me, but it still worked after I signed in on a BB.
You won't find it under application, you'd have to look under notification in your FB settings(full version). It's there because I'm seeing right now. That is why you're able to get it to work.

I concur... I've never seen 'push notification' work on FB for Android application.

Odd.
I guess almost every other platforms have push notification except Android. I wonder why is that so.
i used the bb emulator, and it worked like a charm. although the bb app never showed up on facebook though... oh well as long as it works!
It's there... Look in "notifications" - then "other applications" and you'll see it. I was trying to take a screenshot with my phone - but somehow its not working. Did I forget the steps... Smh!

Tried all the steps, but it does not seem to be working on my cappy.
I don't see the BB app in Aps, but I did find it under notifications>other applications. I checked that box, but it still didn't help... I also noticed that that check box is for email...

Anyways, I don't get notified of new comments...
Log into your Facebook profile via PC. Make sure that this box in "account settings" - "notifications" is unchecked (see screenshot below)

Thanks... I eneded up doing that too Turns out it did work, but what happened was the WiFi I was on didn't allow the push to go through. As soon as I left that network (and was back on 3g) I was flooded with notifications.
So it now appears to work, I just can't be on certain WiFi systems.
Hey Rush, I'm still having trouble with notifications on my galaxy nexus! I want to try your method but I can't see the pic you posted to show which notification box to uncheck! Any ideas?
Thanks

Just follow the steps in my opening thread. ^ This box here is found in account settings -- notifications. It allows Facebook to send notifications to your device. You won't need to do this unless the steps above doesn't work.
Some of you might or might have not noticed that since the last update (fb for android) the notification icon has changed. It is now a grey icon that has a black "F" on it. The icon resembles that of the Gmail notification icon. Nonetheless it still works.

I had activated my facebook push notifications around 4-5 months ago using the blackberry emulator.
Now, since upgrading to Facebook v1.8.2, my notifications broke.
I tried the following:
Delete Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Go Facebook Widget's cache and application data, unsuccessfully
Uninstall all those 3 apps, and reinstall one at the time, meanwhile testing notifications, unsuccessfully
Uninstalled those 3 apps, download an older Facebook apk from the internet, install it, unsuccessfully
On the Facebook post about the v1.8.2 release there are many complains about it breaking the notifications, but I didn't expect to be unable to fix them by installing the older (which used to work) apk... I also tried signing in with the blackberry emulator which did the trick a few months ago, but still nothing.
I tested this both in 3g and wifi, and I'm officially out of ideas now.
(Facebook is set up with Periodic checks=OFF, notifications=ON, all the various checkboxes like vibrate and sound on notification=ON, as it was for all the months that it did work).
Can anyone help me get those back?

Have you tried this; Log onto your facebook account via a computer, go into notifications, scroll down to 'other applications' and delete the BB application. Go back and redo the entire procedure. Best of luck.

I haven't, although I noticed that 1) when I did the procedure, a few months ago, I'd see Facebook for Blackberry in the Applications tab of Account Settings, which I don't anymore (but this seems to be the normality nowadays according to the posts in this threat too I guess...) and 2) when it wasn't working yesterday I went to Account Settings->Notifications->Other Applications, and Facebook for Blackberry wasn't checked. I checked it, and it didn't help. I unchecked it now (which didn't solve it just yet), but how do I actually delete it?
Last edited by tylerdurden83; February 7th, 2012 at 08:41 AM.
You should see an "edit option" right there. (It's on the right-hand side) However, if the BB applications is there, then you don't need to delete it. Make sure the box is checked and click save.
Do this step again: Uninstall and reinstall the FB for android app. Let me know what happens then.
Note: Make sure the box (shown in screen-shot below) in this area is NOT checked.

Reason: add more info
I can't see the screenshot, it says Email Frequency: Send me important updates....
EDIT: I see an Edit option on the right of Other Applications, but clicking it opens a checklist with
Quote:
Dragon Blackjack
Facebook for BlackBerry® smartphones
GO Launcher EX
GoNotification
I Play WoW
JustPictures
Live Holdem
I can check or uncheck those, but I can't actually delete them...
I'm therefore not exactly sure of what you are suggesting me to do, as I already reinstalled FB while having the Facebook for BlackBerry® smartphones checkbox checked.
Can you give me the exact steps that you suggest I should follow?
Thanks,
Rob

I just found out that those applications inside "other applications" cannot be edited. This must have change recently. There was an option to delete the BB app before. Maybe someone else knows how to do this.
The screen-shot above is a notification box inside "account->notification." Facebook leave this unchecked for those who only need to receive (what they believe to be important) important updates.
It seems like you have done all the troubleshooting steps that I would recommend. I don't have any more ideas on why this not working for you. Sorry!
I hope someone else can chime in to help. Good luck.
Ok, so I'm not receiving push notifications either, but I'm wondering if mine is stemming from another problem.
I hate getting email notifications so I have a lot of those unchecked under notifications tab, but does this also affect push notifications? I feel like now I have to choose between being bombarded with emails and get push notifications on my phone or no email and no push.

If certain features are disabled, then you might not receive some notifications.
Under the image your posted, it does not show anything about email frenquency. Under accounts > notifications, there is nothing about that. Is there maybe a step by step you can do to show this? Or has facebook changed so it does not have that anymore?

Keep in mind that you have to be using a pc, or uncheck "mobile view" on your phone. This should let you view the page as if you are on a pc. (From any webpage, tap menu - more - settings - scroll down to mobile view).
Steps to unchecked "Email Frequency." = Go to "Account Settings," then notifications and look on right-hand side. Voila.

Just saw this today, I have had notifications disabled forever and have been using FriendCaster for notifications. My other phone is a blackberry and I have the Facebook app on it, so I am hoping that I start getting real notifications on my android Facebook app now. I'll let everyone know if it works for me.

I'm sure it will. This is why sometime I be 'bumping' this thread.
