PdaNet now available for Android (free USB tethering over 3G or WiFi)
PdaNet has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones, Palm OS phones and the iPhone. It is now ported to the Android system! Unlike other tethering software that only supports Proxy connections, PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes on the computer. Just like the old PdaNet, it is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly.
Just a bit of help for your pdanet - we have a lot of new users here and giving a bit more instruction to your post and software will help users understand why, how and the rest of using your service/software.
It sounds good...give us a little more detail in this thread. Thanks.

PdaNet allows your laptop to go online wirelessly by connecting to the G1 phone. A lot of users have used PdaNet on other (Palm/Windows Mobile) phones before since it has been a very popular software.
It is very simple to use, you just need to download and run the installer from your computer.

Reason: typo
Thanks for this, prefer it to tetherbot. A lot simpler, and I'm getting decent speeds with this. Msn works fine, FileZilla works fine. And program seems extremely stable on Vista.
None of you who are using this have answers to my question #1 and #2?
mmikeyy?
muzicman0?
Perhaps it would be better to ask PDANET the question as he is representing the company offering the software ... Or go to their site and read up on it and ask you questions directly to them ...
As far as I know this is a brand new listing here and this software is still in a BETA condition for use on the G1 platform .... It has been used on other platforms ...
I install the app on an older Xp Dell Latitude D400 laptop..
The install went fine as long as you follow directions ...
1.) Download app from the link above ... it is a beta version for Android ...
2.) run app to install on your PC ..
3.) the program will ask you to connect your G1 via the usb cable ...
4.) Before Connecting go to Settings|Applications|Development| click Use Debugging
5.) I also used "Stay Awake" not sure if necessary ..but you will be able to turn off G1 display when finished ..
6.) Close All PC Apps ... this is important ...as least on my XP ...
7.) Then following on Screen directions Connect G1..
8.) Status bar USB alert .. Select it and choose ...DO Not Mount
9.) the PC will then Detect new hardware ... choose auto-detect and wait for install to complete ..
10.) Wait for install to completely finish ... (follow on screen connections)
11) Go into the apps on your G1 and run the PdaNet | Turn PdaNet ON note: as the app is updated the prompts may change ... so look closely
at your pc system tray as well as the prompts on your phone.
ver.2.4.1 has a button that says "Enable USB Tether" (click it)
12.) Now return to the PC System Tray and Click on PdaNet icon to Connect ...
Yea... Connection to the internet ... via your G1...
To save power ... press your "hang-up button" to turn off the display of your G1
this posting was all done while connected (tethered -- via 3G ) I did not have Wifi to check it out ... so not sure if you can connect thru your home Wifi...
BTW : Your G1 will also be Charging from your laptop during this as well ...
Connection was at 2.4 Mps ... not lighting speed but better than not being connected ...
Doesn't come close to the speed I get from by Verizon Broadband USB Modem USB727

I tried the instructions step by step, but am getting an error while installing the PDANet on the phone "Fail to open device". The first 2 steps are successful. Any ideas?

So what happened on the PC desktop while running Install ... you should have a screen that prompts for you to connect your USB cable between phone and PC ...
NOTE: do not connect USB cable until you are ask to by the installation ..
Also goto to your PC Device Manager. You will probably find an Android Items with a Yellow Question Mark ...
Delete that item ... and start the install process again ...

I installed it last night, just for fun and it worked flawlessly. The only problem is that its alot slower than normal tethering using Tetherbot. Perhaps an update is in the future to fix said problem?
Installed without a problem. But was never able to brouwse one page fully. Second life stalls at login. Internet goes dead after a while. I wish I had stayed with my nokia.
I had a meeting a few weeks ago, during work hours. I used this to keep in touch with the office/email. It worked great. It is NOT super fast (and I don't have 3G coverage in my area... making it worse).
For email, IM, and simple page browsing, over edge, this thing worked great. It is very painless. I have it on my USB thumb drive, so I can toss it on any laptop I am using.

works well and without root but is probably too slow to use seriously
hopefully updates can speed it up a bit
any idea how/if it works wirelessly? (non rooted)
Just used this on my G1. Works great. Really fast - using the Vista 64 bit version.
However, doesn't work for longer than 30secs to 1min. The PC app is fine, the phone app is the one that crashes. Gets to about 30 connections and then crashes.

Thank you for this post, as it appears to be what I need. I am wanting to purchase an unlocked Android phone, but must be able to tether to it for full internet use from a Linux laptop via WiFi or USB.
If using USB, does your team offer assistance with the script settings for pppd?
Indeed, I found the easiest way to tether my linux laptop was to root the phone and use the 'wifi tether for root users' application, which also has the added benefit of being completely free.
I know this is not the right place to ask this question i am super new and this page has the most views i have jf 1.51 and i am trying to get cyanogens rom but when i updated from market app (cyanogens market app) i wiped wont work what is different the radio the spl anything it wont work
Well I have regular internet access at home and will stay with that but pdanet is a nice backup plan for emergencies. I just tried it for the first time and I can get online no problem. It was a cinch to set up. Don't know about the length of time it would stay connected. I was just excited that it worked at all.
Some people might want to have SMTP, IMAP, and/or POP (ports 25, 143, and 110, respectively), if they run their own mail clients instead of using a webmail service.
And, of course, then there's the IM clients (Yahoo, AOL, MSN, Jabber), and their ports.
All of that is outside of http/https (ports 80 and 443, respectively).
Does PdaNet only do http/https?? That'd suck. A lot.

I never noticed any port blocks. I ran IMAP, SSH, IPSEC VPNs, and everything I normally do. When I moved I was without internet for two weeks and PDANet came to the rescue until internet arrived. Worked a treat and hardly noticed it was a tether connection.
Ok I've managed to get this working but only as USB tethering, is it any different to using phone as modem? I've got internet max add-on on 3 and I'm sure if I'll have to pay extra for this? Does anyone for definite?
Also anyone know how to use it for WiFi Tethering? I want to connect it to my ps3.

I've also just installed PDANet on my motorola droid. Seems to work great and the droid app seems to have the option to do Bluetooth DUN (although I haven't tried it yet).
I also did a speed test and was able to download at just over 1400 kbps.
One question comes to mind, has anybody done this already on a verizon phone and not been billed extra for tethering? As far as I am aware, it is not allowed under their contract, but in usual verizon's fashion, it never states what the fee would be if they caught you tethering. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Humm, good question, but it seems to me it's tethering via a free application, so i don't know how they could charge you...However, id like to know as well...
We have been using this every day since it was released.
Haven't tried it with my G1 yet, but works like a champ with her Cliq. Has some issues with secure sites but other than that it works great.
We've used it tethered with the USB and over a weak WiFi signal without issue. Have even been able to make phone calls using the speaker phone while using the net on the PC.
I tried to use this last night on my G1 without success. Popped my girls Cliq on and worked like a charm. Is telling me to make sure that Debugging is on and that the phone is connected .. both of which are.
This app was a life saver when I first got the phone and didn't yet have internet. Later on I got the surprise of limited access after the trial period. By then I had regular internet. Since then I discovered that my latest 1.6 update had builtin USB tethering and that works very well and doesn't require any special USB drivers. For those that are having trouble I found that the USB driver to be picky and can stop working if you install other drivers such as the dreaded HTC Sync application. You might need to reinstall the pdanet on the pc to get things back.
hi guys! i just got my android phone, so still pretty new to it!
btw i followed justjimjpc's instructions above, and all went well until step 11. I went into PDANet under apps of my phone, but the screen I got on my phone said "PdaNet is currently turned off. Please turn it on before connecting from the computer end". The buttons I have in the same screen are "Enable USB Tether" and "Enable Bluetooth DUN". There is no button to turn PDANet on! (Or I am missing anything here?)

It should be an icon in your application gallery somewhere
