I've had a few widget issues with BB as well. I was able to fix them by rebooting. Also, make sure your GPS is on if you're using location based weather.
Genie and News & Weather are the same, AFAIK.
Odex is a file type used by Android for certain system/preinstalled apps. By de-odexing, I believe this means they are either removed or converted into a different format, probably APK. For whatever reason, I guess this increases performance and boot time. I'm not an expert on this matter.
