Default EasyTether -a new tethering app for Android

With this app you can tether your Android smartphone to a computer. EasyTether shares your smartphone Internet connection with your PC.

Features
  • USB connection for the sake of better speed
  • does not require root access
  • works without special tethering data plans
  • supports Windows 7/Vista/XP (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • compatible with HTC Sync
  • UDP support for games, for L2TP VPN (not PPTP!) and for some IM apps
  • Mac OS X will follow later

Looks good for non-rooted users who don't mind carrying a USB cord.

A couple of questions:

1) What is the "low, affordable price for the full version"?

2) Do I need to uninstall the PdaNet trial version I have before I install this?

I downloaded the software (easytether_x86.msi) from their website, and installed it on my Acer Aspire 1 netbook, which runs XP Home. (It warned me it's not officially blessed by Microsoft, but it installed just fine.)

I downloaded the app from the Market and ran that.

Followed all the instructions, but after I connect my HTC Eris via USB to the netbook, (after the bubble pops up from the EasyTether icon in the system tray asking me to), that's as far as it gets. It says one has to wait until Windows loads the drivers, but nothing happens. The bubble just sits there.

Anyone have any advice? Am I supposed to do something else? Do I need to mount the SD card for this to work for some reason? WTF?!

As I understand it, the free version PDANet doesn't work with https pages, but EasyTether does. Of course I can't verify that yet, since it isn't working at all!

Why bother if you can have Wireless Tethering for free and it works via WiFi, so the speed is very good?

The only thing of course, you have to root the phone, but that is just 10 minutes of work, and I mean for someone with no experience with Android like me.

Not everyone wants to, needs to, or should root their phones. This is a good option for them.

Phone doesn't need to be rooted w EasyTether. Speed is VERY good! Had to install HTC Sync to finally get it to work.

There's a new update today for EasyTether, but some folks are saying it removes the https access.

Can anyone verify that?

The 0.9.2 EasyTether will stop working after Feb 19th.
The 0.9.3 EasyTether allows HTTPS and UDP for now, but will deny only HTTPS and UDP after Feb 21st. The regular HTTP will work forever.
The full version without any limitations is available for purchase for 9.95 USD.

It is not necessary to uninstall PDANet. It is necessary to disable it.

mstream - I would be willing to buy, but if and only if it is shown to work reliably on my HTC droid Eris.

I had it installed and working Tues night, (w/ Acer Aspire One netbook running XP Home), but when I tried to use it last night (Wed 2/17), it just wouldn't work. No bubble message telling me to plug in my phone. Here is my experience:
EasyTether with Eris

When it was working, it was very nice. But it makes no sense that it should just stop working over night. All I did inbetween was turn the computer off and back on again the next day.

Update. I uninstalled both EasyTether and HTC Sync, and re-installed them, and now EasyTether is working again. I have connected/disconnected several times, and it seems OK, for the most part.

One time, however, my computer told me it did not recognize this USB device, but when I right clicked on the tray icon and connected, it worked anyway.

My fear is that when I restart the computer, it won't work again.

So there clearly appear to be some bugs here. Please fix!

That is why I rooted my Milestone and use Wireless Tether.

WiFi is good, really good.

I'm curious why the website specifies it "supports Windows 7/Vista/XP (32-bit and 64-bit) desktop computer" (bolding mine). I can't think of too many reasons why someone would tether a desktop, as opposed to a laptop.

I have installed and paid the $10.02 for this program and it is working great for me (running XP SP3) on my notebook. But I'm scared to death that sprint will charge me tethering minutes at .40/min. Can someone please alleviate my fears. Thanks.

Easy Tether dose not use dial-up, it uses GPRS/ UMTS/ CDMA which is not tracked by time but by amount of data transferred.

I tried the free version one night last week. The install was fairly painless, and it worked as advertised.

I wouldn't be using it often enough to justify the purchase price, though, and I just rooted last night, so I don't need to.

I have the unlimited data plan with Sprint. Does anyone know if there is an actual download limit? I read that there is mention of 5GB / month in the fine print somewhere but I haven't found anything on the Sprint web sites. Has anyone been tethering a while with Sprint and would you let us know what kind of volume you have downloaded with or without a complaint from Sprint. Thank you.

Why do you think it's better it costs 3 times as much. Easytether connects and works seamlessly. To be better PDA would have to be faster...

Ok, so I loaded the "free" version, set it up on my laptop (running XP), connected the Cliq and then it asks me for a registration code. What's up with that?

No complaints from Sprint with my unlimited plan, been tethering for months without an increase in monthly bill. Most I downloaded in a month was 32GB. One user on PPC Geeks screen captured his usage for a month, he was just a few megs short of 1TB. The 5gb cap is for everything except mobile handsets, those are unlimited. Been using Easy-Tether for 2 weeks now, love it.

Got the new Droid X and a Win7 laptop. Would only work when I set the USB connection type as USB Mass Storage. Would not see the phone in PC mode. It did work, though so no complaints.

Running XP SP3. PDA Net repeatedly blue-screened my computer, so I switched to Easy Tether Lite. Works great so far (using it right now)!

I have HTC Inc with Verizon and installed PdaNet around July 1 (free version) it connected OK with my laptop and at first I was pleased at how easy it was to get it running.

I did not use it much and one day I hopped on to check an account with https: and was informed that I could not access secure sites without subscribing. I needed to get on urgently so I upgraded and it seemed to work.

I used it that one time and just tried to logon again, only to receive Error messages and logon failures stating to make sure that I have a data connection.

What a waste of money!!! PDANET SUCKS! They claim on their site that it may not work with some systems and they do not give refunds. What a scam.

DO NOT BUY INTO THIS APP!!!

Default Slow and problems connecting

I have been using Easy Tether Lite for about a month now. I only have a few problems with it. 1st, the speed is a lot slower than other posts are saying they run. 2nd, http/ access was working and is now not working for some reason. It wont let me connect to servers as well so Bad Company 2 and other games will not work online. On average the DL rate is about 25-35kbs. I am also using a laptop that runs windows 7 with firewalls turned off to try and fix the problem with connecting to servers. Please help and thank you.

Default laptop display problems w/Easy Tether

I have 2 T-Mobile galaxy phones and have installed Easy Tether on both.

My wife has a Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows XP, and both phones work fine tethered to it.

I have a Dell XPS laptop running Windows 7, and when I tether one of the phones everything works, but the screen display goes all funky, and loses definition ... it works, but the screwed up display makes it very difficult to use.

I assume that there is a driver or something on my laptop that is fighting with Easy tether, but have no idea weher to look or what to do.

I need help ... can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

the app works fine on my galaxy i9000 and ubuntu linux; I can access internet on my laptop via the phone.

Now, I was wondering: I need to connect from my phone to my laptop using a vnc viewer. I'd prefer to do this via a usb cable. Can I somehow do this with easytether?
(to what IP do I need to make the connection?)

Default ???

Has anyone else had a problem connecting? I've been using this app for a while now, but after I recently had to replace my Droid for another (same card, battery, back cover), Easytether wont connect. It just says "connecting" and I've uninstalled it from the phone and laptop and started over, doing everything the same way (that I can recall anyway).

ps-Works perfectly on my girlfriend's macbook. For some reason it just isn't working on my laptop (Windows7)
