Angry MAPS downloading lots of data in background

Hello there,, I found out by using WatchDog and PhoneUsage applications that MAPS is downloading loads of data sometimes when I am not connected to WiFi and was using 3G!!! this really costs me ALOT!! and drains the battery..
there is no specific schedule for these downloads to happen, its mostly in the early morning while I am at work. so I am not connected to any WiFi network.

The problem is temporarily solved by going to the Application Manager and then Clear the data on the Maps app, this will let it stop downloading but later after some days it start downloading again even if I do not open the app all this time..
ps: even when I turn off BG data download!!!!

I got the Samsung ACE phone with Android 2.3.3
this is the ONLY thing I really hate about the phone, I CANNOT stop this to happen... I dont mind to remove the maps app but I cannot and I dont want to root the device.. please help me if you ever faced such a problem. I want to know what I really being downloaded and how the hell can I stop this to happen forever!! thnx

Only way I can figure is to Root you phone and use Titanium Backup to freeze Maps app. However this is a key app. Who knows what other apps require its presence to function.

Is there a data setting on your phone that you can enable WIFI only data updates?

See if the answer to this posting helps you;

Notsure 58 mb!!!

yes, there is an option for that under 'About' and it is already marked!!
I think its for phone update because there is an option for Samsung account underneath it. but the android market hasn't got this option!! I do not know ether these downloads are updates or not.. man its 58 MB today!!!!! and the maps application did not even opened! there is something fishy! i feel someone is tracking me!!!! (joking) but seriously what can let maps use these data while it is not running or updating??

I think something is telling you a fib. I have only used 138 mb since my cycle started on the 3rd of December.
Where are you located? I looked at your profile, but no data there. You a Verizon customer? Regardless I would go to the store of your carrier and ask some questions.

If you are a Verizon customer there should be a widget My Verizon Data that will tell you how much data you have used.

I rooted and "forgot" to unfreeze maps after a reset. No maps since August. Haven't missed them.

Some apps like Weatherbug can use GPS or network, and most astronomy apps you can enter coordinates manually.

I don't care to have the phone talking at me while driving, so I get an online map from Mapquest and put that on the phone as a pdf. I only need it for new areas of town and then only for a new store if the store has something I want.

If you like stuff like Latitude or other social type apps with instant friend tracking, you will probably need maps. Or you want navigation.

I've found that with Gingerbread, the manual update only works better than Froyo.
