wen i turn off my phone it disconnect o the kies

please help me.. i tried to upgrade my galaxy mini to v2.3.6 using kies and ODIN. but wen i turn off my phone to download from computer, the usb disconnect and kies said "connecting" but does not connect at all. i waited for so long hoping to connect but it did not. please help me...
