Default icloud type of app for android???

I used to have MIQ:live for my last phone but the app doesn't work on my new phone with 2.3 gingerbread. The app backed up almost almost everything automatically including call logs, pictures, videos, and text messages to a online server. Is there a similar service that backs up things on your phone automatically to a "cloud" Thanks!

I've have thought of making something like this, however that takes more disk space than I have access too, let me know if you find a good one, I haven't thats why I was going to make one for personal use

that would back things up automatically? I'm sure you would make a lot of money if you can make something like that. I believe MIQ worked just like icloud. I was looking for a similar app.

yeah, I figured I could, however something of that magnitude requires a TON of cloud disk space, which as a 17 year old programmer, I do not have sadly

I've been using Sugarsync before there was an iCloud. Then there's Dropbox. iCloud is basically a copy of those services. I have 28GB of online server storage space on Sugarsync and 8GB on Dropbox. I use Sugarsync for personal storage. Its got there school notes, pictures, ebooks, whatever. It maxes out at 105GB of online cloud server storage free if you get enough referrals.

You can't really compare iCloud to anything atm. iCloud is sick as in pure genius.

ORLY? What does iCloud do that other cloud services can't? See your pictures on your PC right after you get them? Sugarsync does that. Need to transfer a file to phone? I put it in the appropriate folder and voila, the file is physically in my SD card in a few minutes. Plus 5GB storage? That's too little.

I really do not get the appeal of storage in the cloud where it is subject to the security and size limits of the service provider (who in turn is subject legal requirements). I would much rather have peer-to-peer that syncs with my PC and devices at home and only uses the service for secure authentication and connection services. I suppose there is a benefit to storing in the cloud if I want to share something but honestly even that is dubious.

This is the reason I love Live Mesh - it allows me sync peer-to-peer without having to store it in the cloud but gives me the option to for items it really makes sense for. A pity it isn't available for Android, but hopefully MS will release an Android client or some other service will step up.

Actually Live Mesh uses an add-on storage area on Skydrive, the MS version of cloud storage

"Automatic" is a tall order, as that would imply that it's always running and draining your battery. The next best thing I think, is JS Backup. Use it with Dropbox or similar, and you can backup to the cloud at will.

And like most background running apps, unless its actively doing something like syncing, it wont use too much battery.

True, but it doesn't apply in this case. An app that is constantly monitoring the file system for new or updated files, and then doing an on-the-fly sync, does use battery.

I haven't noticed any significant drop in battery life with Sugarsync active on my phone though. It doesnt even register in the battery usage monitor, which means it comprises less than 1% of usage.

Dropsync for Dropbox can be set to check selected files or folders at selected intervals rather than monitor constantly to save battery and bandwidth. If I remember right Sugarsync has a similar option, but I haven't used it for a while so don't hold me to it.

Then you are not using Sugarsync's AutoSync feature, else you have contradicted your earlier statement that "unless its actively doing something like syncing, it wont use too much battery." Realtime sync does consume battery... there's no way around it. Let's not forget that the OP asked about an iCloud-like app, and iCloud is realtime.

I read that you get max 8gb from referrals

Edit:

Says on the website the max is 32gb

www.sugarsync.com/faq/referral_program.html

So plus the free 5gb and the 500mb (if you were refered ) that's 37.5gb max you can get for a free account. Or am I missing something? Is there another cloud where you can get more space for free?

The point is that the use of Skydrive is optional. You can choose to sync PC-CLOUD, PC-CLOUD-PC, or PC-PC. You can do this on a per folder basis. By opting to not sync to the cloud your not limited to the 5GB space Skydrive provides. You can even sync and share with others without sync'ing to Skydrive.

It has, you have to deactivate Autosync

I am using it actually. Everytime I take a picture a Sugarsync icon appears on the notification bar saying "1 photo is syncing".

I already have 38GB free. They might have changed it since, because last year it still had no maximum stated. The entire website and apps were updated a couple of weeks ago.
