The more often you poll email the faster you'll drain the battery. Polling every 15-30 seconds would hit the battery hard.
Rather than polling so much Gmail will push mail to you and notify you on arrival. You get notification of new mail usually in less than 30 seconds of arrival in your inbox. This works with the standard Gmail app.
