Exclamation Swype for Android now OFFICIALLY in beta

Register to download the official beta release. It's better than the leaked version, and legal.

I uninstalled the original version first, then ran the SWYPE installer that gets installed with this download.

just installed the beta... Had been using an older version on my eris and after upgrading to 2.1 my older version was not working as smoothly as before. This morning I found a newer version and loaded it with it working much smoother and noticed small changes to the interface.

Then I found the android beta info and loaded it instead noticing more small changes but working great so far!

Love the swype.

Thanks for the heads up! They added vibrate on keypress (I was hoping for that)! Never a boring day in Android World!

What a great way to start a weekend, thank you! To settings pronto, new default vibrate feels a little like being tased. It's happened to me so often. :-)

Since this IS the "Android Applications" sub-forum, and SWYPE is an Android Application ... I figured this was the most appropriate place to actually have a thread regarding the release. No?

Just out of interest, why do they need your name/town etc? I can understand asking people to register for a beta to gauge interest etc but I can't quite get my head around why they need all the info they ask for?

Anyone get the email, then when following the link you arrive at a page that says "oops swype can't figure out where you are trying to go." Kinda like the link was incomplete and would not direct me all the way to the installer. I have a cellular south HTC hero (like the sprint) and have never had it installed before. It will allow me to log onto website and resend "download" email. Same results every time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In Dolphin, I opened the link I was trying to visit and there was a %Cbr at the end of the link. Remove it and you are good to go.

Or just go to beta.swype.com/android/get

Just a heads up - xScope and Dolphin where not downloaing the complete install file. The native browser worked fine.

Update: Xscope just released an update that fixes the Swype download issue.

There's a problem on the nexus. When you reboot, you get an error message and it stops working. Uninstall and reinstall and its fine again.

This! I tried uninstalling then rebooting and installing again, but it always breaks after the latest install. The leaked beta never had these problems.

I'm not having a single issue, but I've heard others are. They said if you just long-press in the text field, then tap "Input Method" and select SWYPE, that you're fine until the next reboot. For what it's worth...

I signed up, recieved the email, clicked on this link https://beta.swype.com/android/get/ and it tells me that I'm not on an android phone? I have even changed the https to http and I get the same result. Seriously, I'm on my Hero.

No issues with my Moto Droid, either. I just rebooted to be sure, and everything seems fine.

No need. I uninstalled it, redownloaded and reinstalled, and the problem's gone away. Mind you, I've also stopped Swype from auto-starting with auditor, but I don't think that should make a difference.

This app is awesome! I really hated the lag on my Hero keyboard so much so that I avoided using it at all cost, and would just text people from my Palm Pre, but this app makes it actually cool to use the keyboard. Thanks Swype.

Anyone else kind of bummed that swype is over 4MB? Also, if you don't uninstall the installer, that's another 2 MB.

Also wish there were a couple of dedicated smilie buttons.

Looks nice, still testing it out now.

Quite, leaked version totaled to a whopping 12 MB. Not that it affected me too much since I use apps2sd, but I too appreciate the slimmer package.

I showed this to my dad and he freaked out. He thought it was amazing =D

On the stock messaging app, it's menu - more - insert smiley.

I sent a text the other day to somebody using swype, and my friend saw me do it from a distance. He said it was like I just drew a big circle on my phone. This program is impressive.

Same problem on a DROID...I think. I get a "This version does not support your device. Functionality will be limited" (paraphrased) message and I can only input by tapping. Long press isn't bringing up the keyboard switcher in RTM, but I haven't tried it in another app yet.

I think someone from the Swype boards found a work around. When this happens you just turn off Swype to switch back to the default Android keyboard then turn it back on again. Not tested this yet but here's the thread if anyone's interested: linky

Had the same thing, uninstalled and reinstalled. works now!

Does anyone know how to switch swype off so you can enter user names and passwords?

On the hero keyboard there is a button on the bottom left that closes the keyboard so you can select the next input box. Not sure how to do that with swype.

Long-press anywhere in the text block, and it'll bring up a menu that will include "Input method." Select that, and choose the keyboard you want.

Not familiar with your phone but on the Droid to just get Swype to leave the screen I hit the back button. Swype does have a "next" key that appears to take you to the next input field when you need it (and a "done" key when all fields are completed).

Holding down your menu button also hides the on screen keyboard.
