Default How do I keep Android from closing my apps?

Hi, I'd like to use android for multitasking and would like it to keep some apps open in the background constantly, i.e. the opera browser.
However, Android keeps closing it by itself when I switch to other tasks, and often when I switch back I have to wait a couple seconds for it to start again.
I've read and fully understand how Android works and that it's designed this way so it never runs out of memory because of its "smart" memory management.

However, rather then smart I find this stupid and annoying, and I don't want it to be this way, I would prefer it to give me out of memory messages instead of having it close and reopen what I was doing. Is there any solution for this?
Thanks a lot,

Some custom ROMs offer the ability to protect certain apps from being closed by Android, but I've never heard of this capability in a stock ROM.
