Default Question about Google Voice

Im about to be new to the use of Google Voice and i was wondering when it comes to the 2 choices you have when making the new account.Of those of you that have it,which choice do you think is better and why?Making a new number or keeping your old one?it would seem that the perks of the new number are better but i having a hard time deciding on that one cuz that would mean id have to let everyone know on my contact list my new number.....and thats a WHOLE LOT.if i could get some perspective on some of your personal use of it i think it would help make my decision easier.thanks

You can get the new number and only use it for certain people, or not use it at all. I give it to people I wouldn't want to give my real number to, and I have Google Voice prescreen the calls and sometimes even have everyone go straight to voice mail.

I went with a new number. Then I just slowly transitioned lots of people over to it, mainly everyone except for a few people that I prefer to make sure their call gets to me just in case Google Voice ever has an issue.

I went with a new number. It is very similar to my acutal number. Then followed their directions on call forwarding to use it as prime voice mail and skip using the carriers voice mail.

nypuertorcn23, once you realized how fantastic GV is, you're going to want to use it as your main number. It just facilitates so many more features that make the phone that much more useful.

I also choose to get a new number. Having so much control over what calls come through, to which phone... I don't regret not using my existing cell phone number.

I'd suggest just switching entirely to the GV number. You can only use all the features with the GV number. It's really not that difficult to get people to switch in my experience. You can set up you carrier's voicemail with a message telling people to use the GV number.
