Default AIM, MSN, Yahoo use SMS? Say it ain't so!

This is directly from TMO's site. linky

So yeah, looks like if you are a heavy AIM, MSN or Yahoo user, you're going to have to pony up $10/mo additional to get unlimited text messaging. I took a quick look around to see if there were any AIM apps and came up empty. So, until we get a 3rd party developer coming up with one, we are going to be stuck with lame SMS messaging. This is really dissapointing.

I don't. I'm using about 250-300. Then again, I don't IM regularly with my phone. Most are text messages to the wife and the rest are to other friends (maybe 25-35).

I think you read my post wrong?

I'm saying that heavy IM users will want to go the route of the unlimited SMS package. I'm on AIM a fair bit, and I will definitely burn through those 400 messages.

Gotcha. With my sidekick I normally blow through 2000 txts a month, of course thats sent and received. I don't use aim all that much.. but does anyone know if the sidekicks AIM feature works the same way as the G1's?

I hope it does!! The sidekick keeps you signed on forever. I switched from SK to Wing about a year ago and the AIM is probably one of the things I missed most.

It's going to seem like it does, but it's going to use SMS as the backend, so yea, AIM/MSN/YaHOO will count against your SMS total. It will show up in a separate app tho.

It's kind of weird that it uses an SMS backend, considering the actual AIM/Yahoo/MSN protocols are also internet based, and not SMS based.

Add-on programs will probably use the real thing, instead of the SMS version.

(I do enough SMS, though, that that alone justifies unlimited messaging)

Most likely it is using IMPS for everything but gtalk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMPS
I have a IMPS to AIM proxy I have been using with my razr with the 5.99 data plan (but it is not push). There IMPS server bills messages like texts.

Since Yoono got blocked at work, it seems that I will be doing much more IM'ing on Y!/MSN through the G1.

I guess that means I'll be upping to the unlimited message plan.

You should be able to setup a transport on your gtalk account. http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/general-other-im-news/33739-connect-google-talk-aim-msn-yahoo.html

You would always try meebo.com its a unified client. Not to bad, then again, not like a real native phone app either. Its good when you are in a stranglehold

The apps will come, no worries. Its still a young platform.
