Default Best IM Solution

If your anything like me then you need instant messaging such as aim or gmail etc. But your tired of paying 10 dallors for chat clients that only use one service ie Hello IM only does aim. But what if you use gmail and msn do u pay and download 2 other clients to constantly switch back and forth well using an aim transport server you don't have to.
The built in gtalk client is doesnt disconnect after 5 min of u being in another program like palringo so i used an aim transport server to add all of my aim contacts to gtalk then used my gtalk client to talk to my friends. not only can i add other sevices to gtalk making it the all in one IM client but in my phone contact list it also shows if they are online or not and i can chat with them by long pressing their name
the how to is located here Connect Google Talk to AIM, MSN, & Yahoo

*i use jaim.at for my aim transport
*tip if you don't like having their screen name as buddy@aim.jaim.at then long press their name in google talk go to friend info and Choose their actual name or something visually appealing

I did this for my htc magic, my msn contacts are appearing on my phone and they have their correct statuses but whenever i try to talk to them via the official Gtalk client i get a forced close and if people try ti talk to me same thing happens.

However when i use ebuddy to connect to my gtalk account i still get all my msn contacts via this solution and i can talk to them fine.

Soemthing wrong with the HTC magic GTalk client?

Thanks for the info...your point about disconnecting and using the most stable app does make some sense. Frustrating that the first poster already had issues.

The problem seems to be a bug in the Google Talk client which makes it crash whenever a contact has a percentage "%" sign in their e-mail address. As the MSN transport encodes e-mail addresses with a percentage sign, this effectively makes the client impossible to use with MSN. There's a bug report for it here, don't know why it is closed though...

I've been using Nimbuzz. It's fairly new, so there are a few bugs yet; but it's been working great and has a much nicer interface than anything else out there.

They also have a version for Mac and Windows which I have been using as well.

It supports MSN, AIM, Skype, GTalk, Yahoo and basically everything else out there.

Meebo, while acknowledging disconnects happen, has been a great solution for me. I like the interface, and web interface too. It works well.

I've been having a look at IM clients, it seems to me that one huge plus for Meebo is that you don't have to sign up for an meebo account to use it. you just enter your IM account details on your phone and away you go.

Palringo, eBuddy and Nimbuzz all want me to register with them and store my IDs and passwords on their servers.

I've been using Meebo. So far I haven't had any problems with it. I really only use AIM though, but I have signed into MSN a couple of times. Haven't seen any problems with it on my Droid.

I'm not too sure about disconnects though. I can only recall one day where I left it connected all day, and I didn't see any disconnects.

I'm on the computer so much that it's not really necessary for me to be connected to IM on my phone all the time. I am going to start signing into my work account from my phone though during lunch just to see how it works out.

I have been testing out the native AIM app, since it was such a great solution on the sidekick and most of my contacts still use AIM. Sadly it too disconnects when not in use and worse yet the icon in the notification bar still displays a green "connected" dot when it isn't.

If you are going to be chatting it is a great interface and even has add ons like Facebook integration. If they solve the connection dropping and notification of connection dropping it would be hands down the best.

I still find gtalk has issues and disconnects quite often.

Another + for Nimbuzz. The most complete and stable IMHO.

Unhappy Nimbuzz issues

I have had lots of problems with Nimbuzz on my droid. Besides the disconnects and (seemingly) random dropping of one connection or anothers (leaving others intact, like AIM disconnections, but Yahoo Messenger doesn't) there is one MAJOR show-stopper for me. As soon as I install the app, even if it isn't running, I cannot pick up a call on call waiting. If I try, the phone app crashes. So, if I am on a call and another call comes in I have to ignore it. If I try to pick it up - whammo. If I uninstall the app the problem goes away. Reinstall it and it's back. And again, the Nimbuzz service doesn't have to be running. I hope they fix this issue (and the others) - I really like having a one-stop-shop for all my IMing needs.

Has anyone found a good solution that doesn't kill your battery? I've been using eBuddy for a few months and am signed in all day so I can use my yahoo account. Regularly I have to charge my battery by noon, on my way from work at 6 and overnight.

I'm starting to try a few others because I can't take this anymore. Just updated my Hero to 2.1 and when IM isn't on it stays charged. I'm fine with one battery charge a day but not 3.

I soooo miss the BB's yahoo app.

@kermtfrg - there is an option in Ebuddy to save battery. Think it only checks for IMs every fifteen minutes or something instead of instant. Not sure, but I am trying that out at the moment as I have found that Ebuddy kept my phone awake 100% of the time.

Is there a way to go offline on only one account on Nimbuzz ? I have Facebook and MSN accounts there but sometimes I want to be online only on MSN. How can I do that ?
