LookOut will show you his current location. Of course, LookOut has to be installed on his device for it to work. LookOut also has Lost/Stolen phones functionality and Antivirus functionality. I'm not sure this is what you are looking for or not.

You may want to try Track&Protect, it has some nice features, Google MyTracks anso allow you to track the location.

But for both apps, I think it won't be hard for you son to cancel the tracking...

'Latitude' and 'Foursquare', when installed on his phone, can also show you his position. As can other location apps. Or you could ask him, by phone or SMS, to send you a Glympse.

Thank you all, perhaps I should have been more specific. My 8 year old has special needs and has wandered off from a teacher and counseler, but never without his backpack. I hoping to eliminate similar instances by havingthe phone in his pack

In that case you should be aware of a major drawback of phone tracking, mymarty: it kills the battery FAST! Like a brimfull battery to a dead battery in 4 hours!
