Default Calling App: See who's on the phone when calling?

I'm trying to figure out what app allows the caller to see if the recipient is on a call. I have the iPhone and my friend has an android phone and he was able to tell that I was on a current call. Is there a way to block this? He was also able to tell when I had do not disturb activated.

Am I crazy to think this is somewhat intrusive? Please let me know how to block these apps.

If you're using Verizon and you're on a call when another call comes in, the caller will heart a short tone at the end of each ring. This is implemented by the carrier and there's really nothing you can do about it. Other carriers may do something similar.

Add for "do not disturb", it's probably something similar to the above (I.e. carrier implemented), or the caller is being sent directly to voicemail.

Regardless, I don't think there is any app involved on the caller's end.
