Default Google+ Background Data Usage!

Hi All,

I thought I'd give everyone a heads up about a serious bug in Google+.

Google+ went rogue on my wife's phone yesterday morning and started periodically (every 2 hours) downloading 700MB of background data over 3g. This very quickly used up her 1GB monthly allowance.

We only became aware of the problem when our carrier blocked our phones for excess data usage, and thank goodness they did. The excess charges were already up to $450.

I'm assuming the app was trying to download something (without any input from us) and failing, so kept trying again and again.

Our Carrier (bless them) agreed to waive the excess charges when I explained the situation. However I'm sure some carriers wouldn't be so reasonable. I wasn't looking forward to having to take this up with Google, to try to get them to pay the excess.

Does anyone know how to submit an official complaint/bug report for Google+. This seems to me to be a serious bug that needs to be sorted ASAP.

I'm planning to do a factory reset on the phone before bringing it back online. Should I download log files or something to help submit a report?

Eugene

Google+ is a known battery hog/data hog at least on the Galaxy Nexus line. Many users have disabled google+ ability to sync for that reason. Also, I've seen other background syncs get stuck for hours too. Fortunately for me they are usually on wifi plus I'm still on unlimited data.

You can report bugs in running apps by going into settings> apps > running and selecting the appropriate app. There should be a report button to click.

I've not had any issues with Google+ like you've had (in fact, mine's way down on the list for usage. 4mb data, and 28mb wifi for this month thus far), but I do recommend submitting a bug report. You can do so here:

http://code.google.com/p/google-plus-platform/issues/entry

If Google does get back with you, they'll probably either ask you if you've tried factory resetting the phone (this fixes corrupt files. Corrupt files can happen over time, during an install, during the install of updates, or other various reasons), or they may ask you for some type of log.

Sometimes it's helpful to list these things about the phone you're having issues with: the make, model, version of Android, and carrier. This specific information will help others better assist you, and you can sometimes get the answers a lot faster.
