Been using my S3 a while now and i love it so much more than iphone.. Now i've gotten the hand of the basics i'm looking at changing stock apps for better play store replacements.
I've already got swype as a keyboard very similar imo to swiftkey but at 65p intro offer much the better option.
For video playback i've got MX player free, and seems fantastic on the vids i've got on my phone.
Whats everyones recommendations for music? Anything better than the stock app? I dont mind paying a little but prefer free obviously.
Any other apps that i can replace the stock with for better use? interested in peoples personal views so i can play around.
I Iike the stock music player because it's built in and does everything I need. But if you're looking for something a little more advanced or something that automatically downloads album art, give PowerAmp a try. There's a free trial version available in the playstore.

Google Play Music. I have all my MP3's stored in the cloud and stream them to my phone. You can also play the music already on your phone, and you can sync just certain albums for offline usage from the cloud. I really like it, and it's free!

Isn't the cloud storage/sync part only available in the US?
I, like just about everyone else here, use Poweramp. I've used others, but kept going back.

PowerAmp as well. Does everything Winamp Pro can but with a better UI. For a free option I'd suggest Winamp, but meh its really ugly IMO. I can't understand why Winamp for PC has good looking skins while the Android version doesn't.

+1 for WinAmp (free version). Unlike PowerAmp, WinAmp syncs with your PC via WiFi (or USB) making it very easy to create playlists (since it's much easier to do that on the PC). WinAmp also allows you to stream music from Shoutcast radio stations or any station for which you have a URL. WinAmp also has lots of cool plug-ins like lyrics plug-ins, etc. For me WinAmp's superior feature set trumps any differences in the beauty of the GUI.
You don't need WinAmp to sync with your PC for music. I use WinAmp on my PC, but PowerAmp in my phone.
Considering that I can only run WiFi sync when the WinAmp app is actually running on my phone, I don't understand you can "sync" without the WinAmp app, unless by "sync" you mean a manual process whereby you export properly structured M3U playlists and then drag them to the phone via USB (along with music). Please let us know.

Via USB. I plug in my phone and WinAmp for PC recognizes the Android device and its SD card. After that I just hit the transfer button on the playlists I want to sync. I never liked WiFi sync on WinAmp coz its a lot slower than USB.

I love Player Pro,it aint free, but only costs around $5,it's awesome. I use it on all my android devices, you can also get a DSP pack, for free, after you have purchased it.
Playerpro and Poweramp, I have purchased both full versions.
Though I use Playerpro as default simply because it acceses music as it is on phone or MicroSD ie in folders/directories (artists folders within these albums folders within these track files).
For some reason I cannot seem to get Poweramp to do this - anyone know of a solution?

Folders on poweramp is just a mess, when my music is logically ordered on micosd.

Not sure in your case but my music is properly tagged, so they appear properly in the artists, tracks, albums and genre folders.
How sre your music arranged anyway? Mine is in a folder arrangement of artist>album>tracks. But with them being properly tagged, folder arrangement becomes irrelevant.

My music is arranged the same artist/album/tracks with exception of compilation albums which are located within a folder called compilation/album/tracks.
The main problem I have is compilation albums are literally broken down to artist - which actually creates duplicates eg killers or the killers.
"The killers" folder has 4 albums whilst "killers" folder has 1 track from a compilation.
I totally agree with everyone Poweramp is the better player but Playerpro does allow me to view/access music literally as it is stored on the micosd.

Poweramp has a problem with the 'album artist' tag. That is, it doesn't recognise it or use it. You can see this is you have a compilation album with lots of different artists on it. The 'album artist' is put down as one of the artists from the album, rather than what is tagged. In my case I have compilations down as 'various artists'. Took me a while to see this as an single artist album was always correct (as long as all the songs were tagged correctly that is).
They say that V3 of Poweramp will fix this but no idea when that's coming.
I personally love Z Player. It has a really classy look to it akin to the old zune interface, and it grabs all kinds of artist info and art. Even lyrics.
I'm not able to use PowerAMP stream mp3 from my NAS in ES File Explorer. When I open a MP3 file, PowerAMP isn't in the list, others are such as ES Media Player, Google Music..etc.

That just means your songs are improperly tagged. Retag the 'Killers' to 'The Killers'

I have used Poweramp, Winamp, and Playerpro, and I prefer Playerpro because of the many choices of music categorization, and the customization options.

Pressing play on that folder will automatically play that folder, with equal Shuffling ability enabled between folders as they are between Albums.

Nice. When I press the lyrics button in PowerAmp I get the option to view the lyrics after they've been searched, or it plays the music in the MusixMatch plug in while the lyrics are displayed on the screen synced to the time when the Artist is singing those particular words

I clicked on the State of Trance Album using PowerAmp and it showed many tracks by many different Artists
Most of them do about the same things to me. The difference maker for my selection of PlayerPro is the album cover thumbnail when searching through lists of songs. In PowerAmp, I think you only see them when searching the "album" list. If there is a way to see the thumbnails when looking at the "artist" or "all songs" lists, I'd like to know how.

And ...? Not sure what you are saying. "Assuming" that all your mp3 tags are correct then it will list all songs/artists correctly. What it gets wrong is the 'album artist' tag. In the 'various artists' example I used, all the songs on the album would be listed correctly - but the 'album artist', that is the one that should be 'various artists' as that is what I used, is incorrect and a random song artist from the album is used.

There isn't any "Album Artist" in the list of supported tags. Maybe if it's a popular feature that everyone would like then you could contact the developer and vote for a feature request.
I don't have any other compilation Albums, but in future I might label any compilation Album titles with a Various Artists appendage, and I can understand if you have needs of specifically knowing if there are various artists included in a particular Album.
For me it isn't really a second thought as I usually see the Album Art which is usually titled appropriately as to which Artist is featuring in the Album, or art corresponding to a popular compilation brand for example Hits of 89 with no Artist name on it.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying, or vice versa. The lack of the 'album artist' tag in Poweramp is a BUG. And, as I said earlier, it will be 'fixed' in V3, whenever that comes out. Glad you don't have a problem it not being there but lots of us do.

So I read this again and thought I should mention a few things.
Note you mention Via USB. Yes I can sync up stuff to my phone using usb and any software out there right now. Even on my linux machine. I mean android base programing is designed to do that out of the box.
The unique thing with winamp is the availability of using wifi sync - and maintaining all of your playlists in one handy unit. Also if you mod a playlist with a song or set that is in another play list and those songs are already on the device - it doesn't try to re-send them.
I'll admit that usb might be faster - even though wifi N is no slouch. But I have to say I like being able to send updates to 2 devices at once without having either device in my hand.
Something I've not found any other player capable of. Also winamps eq works as well and sounds as well as PowerAmp's. IMO.
bear in mind this is on a Motorola Razr Maxx, and a Droid 4 as my user devices. So that might have some bearing
I'll admit that usb might be faster - even though wifi N is no slouch.
Agreed. For me any speed difference of an incremental USB sync over a WiFi sync is completely insignificant and outweighed by the time that it takes me to connect the USB cable and turn on the USB storage.
Aside from WiFi sync, for me, the other big advantage of WinAmp over the others is the ability to stream Internet radio stations.
Considering only free players i like best Maven player (Emersys) it has all the functions i need. There is also a paid version but i have never tried it.
jetAudio? I don't have golden ears, but have heard some say this is the best. It's from the makers of Cowon mp3 players, which are known for audio quality.
There's also a no-ads Plus version for $4.
You have to dig around the interface to find all the options. Like the pitch-controlled speedup/slow down feature is not available in the menus on some screens.
