I have multiple email accounts & would love to find an app that will act like Thunderbird. I want to check all the accounts and look at one Inbox and see all the mail that has come in with different labels.
I have seen posts suggesting that the primary android mail app does this, but I don't seem to have that on my Desire, and can't find it to install either.
I would love an App that at least looks and feels like the iPhone email app. The features I liked about the iPhone mail app were:
Easier navigation between multiple accounts. The account page on the iPhone was a home page where you got a quick view. On this phone you have to press a tiny little spot at the top of the screen to get a pop up to switch accounts. With pickle fingers like mine this can be entertaining to watch.
Easier navigation between folders within each account - if you have used the iPhone app you know what I mean here.
Easier to delete multiple emails. Too many clicks in this app.
Ability to see *all* my folders in an account. I have noticed that for example my "spam" folder in my Yahoo account is not accessible in my phone. Which is a bummer because I used to go in there and delete all the spam at once so that when I opened my account at home I did not download all the spam.
I see a couple people mentioned K-9 - any idea if it supports Pop email? I saw it said something about IMAP and SMTP. My Yahoo and another I have use Pop3.

POP3 works fine polling, but there is no PUSH with it.

If I d/l the APK and install it, would it work as an update, or would I need to uninstall my version first (and thus lose all settings, accounts, etc)?
Just DLd the latest build of K9 & it does exactly what I was hoping for using the integrated inbox.
Now if they could have the option to only display the Subject, Sender & date/time in the message list instead of part of the message itself. This would make thing a lot cleaner looking.

That's an easy one: turn "off" Touch friendly view.
It's not quite friendly on the Inc, yet.

For me - I do not think K-9 will work out. I have been trying it for the last day or so. Overall I like the look/feel better but the requirement to have to tell it get new emails (for pop3) is also a pain. I am going to give it a couple more days to see if it is just a newness resistance thing.
So I have k9 (stupid name, i ignored it first, thinking it was a egroup app) downloading from my main account, and hotmail - but no widget for unread mails? (the 2x1 MaiWidget is too big, by 100%)

Im using K-9 and its working fine but i do have a questtion that i cant find any answer to.
When i start up the app i see a list of all folders but i Have both: Sent and [gmail]/sent and [imap]/sent, same with draft folder and trash. i think its is a bit messy with all those folder and would like to only see Inbox, sent etc or only the gmail folders.
Im only using Gmail for this account but i have SMS Backup installed and its over imaip on google, thats why i have the imap folders i think.
You may want to try a newer build (available on the k-9 website.) When I open the app I get an account list, not a folder list.
To get the folder list you describe, I need to click on a specific account.
The folders are there because SOME APP is (or was) using IMAP on that account.
K-9 has options to set certain folders as visible based on a "class" system. It's a bit complicated, but if you need to have IMAP folders and do not want to have to look at them, it might be worth a look
One last question, do you know why i get the same email in both sent folder and my [imap]/sent folder when i send a email using my gmail account?
Yes. You have the gmail account to use IMAP on K-9. That is how IMAP works.
The general idea behind IMAP is that you can download messages from the server on multiple machines WITHOUT removing it from the server (or marking it read or archiving it etc.)
For example: you can dl your mail on your Inc and then when you get home it will still be in your INBOX when you check your email on your home computer.
In the example you give, it shows up in your IMAP/sent folder so that if you logged on to the account from your computer it would show in your IMAP/sent folder from that computer, also. it shows in your "normal" sent folder because you sent it from your phone.
If you don't NEED IMAP and you don't mind POLLING instead of PUSHING on your phone, changing the account to POP may be easier/simpler.
This is a decent explanation of the difference between POP and IMAP:
I I use IMAP on all my machines EXCEPT my main laptop. That way at the end of the day I have all my email stored locally, but until I archive it, it is available from any of my other computers/phones etc.
I hope this helps. I am NOT an expert on IMAP, but I have been trying to figure it out ;-)

Having switched over to an HTC Incredible from an iPhone, I'm feeling the same way.
Everything is awesome about this phone, but when I'm using the HTC Mail app and the Gmail app, I can't help but long for the simplicity in the Apple Mail app. Switching accounts, deleting messages and just seeing what's going on in all of your accounts on one screen are the primary things that irritate me.
If you've found something that you're satisfied with, I'd be grateful if you could share it. It doesn't have to be a free app either.
i've recently updated to the latest version of k9 from the website (the market only had 2600 or thereabouts) and like this integrated inbox view option.
this is quite useful but is there a way of defaulting the view when i open the app, to be in that view and if i press the back key, it will take me back to the top level folder where i have that and the individual mailboxes for selection.
much like how a mailbox you can select the default opening folder to "inbox" i want the view to default to integrated.
also, is there a widget anywhere that displays the unread emails?

No - Sorry. I have not found anything that resembled the iPhone email app. I tried the K-9 app for several days. It has its plusses over the stock mail app on the Incredible, but it has its drawbacks too. I still am not satisfied but I have not made up my mind if I prefer the stock app or K-9. Either way I will continue to hope for a better email app.

I installed K9 this morning and from a navigation perspective, it's about perfect - but I see that it lacks push. Hopefully it will continue to evolve, but for this n00b to Android, it's a really nice step in the right direction. I'll probably keep HTC's Mail app running for push and use K-9 when I know I have new mail

I have learned quite a bit about the included HTC Mail app on the Android over the past couple of days and am now quite satisfied with it.
A couple of things I now realize:
1. If you're in a mailbox from one provider and want to switch mailboxes, you do NOT need to press the menu button => more => Accounts list. For some reason, I completely missed it before, but just yesterday noticed that next to the mailbox name (in my case, Gmail), there is a circular button with a down arrow in it. Pressing that takes you straight to the accounts list and lets you switch. DUH... why didn't I notice that before?
2. If you're looking at a list of emails and just want to quickly nuke one of them, instead of using the menu button => delete, you can simply touch and hold on an email. A context menu opens, then you can hit delete. Again, this was a big DUH moment for me.
So, in short, I'm now fairly satisfied with the built in Mail app. I wish it was more gesture driven, but it does the job and is not nearly as annoying as I originally found it to be.
