Personally prefer Meebo. the Talk app is really solid, but only connects to gchat

I'm new to Android too, but Palringo is really cool and I'm certain it's available.

I'm going with eBuddy but I hope they expand the Google Talk app to include more clients.

I've been using Meebo since it was released, and it's a damn good app. I mainly use it for AIM and Facebook chat, but it supports all the major chat protocols; MSN, Yahoo, MySpace, Jabber, ICQ, Google Talk, Facebook, AIM.

Coming from an iPhone I really like how the AIM app stays signed in behind the scenes with the push notifications and everything. Does the Android AIM app with multi-tasking work well like this too? Does the facebook chat feature work well too?

I always stay signed on AIM as my co-workers all use AIM and thats a central way we communicate so this is important since I work on the go.

Can you make it sort the buddies by groups exactly like it does on meebo.com? I'm coming from Blackberry and I've been using Beejive on my BB for a while. I'm looking for something that works very similar to that.

Nope, that's the only thing I don't like about meebo.

Everyone I know uses Gmail chat so the Pre's (and I assume Evo's) built-in chat will be fine.

Out of curiosity, on Android are text messages and Google IMs displayed in a single thread like on WebOS? I loved being able to chat with my friends via Google while they are at work on their computer and then keep the convo going after they headed out and just had their phone on them.

No, unfortunately it's not like that, but you can be signed into the gmail at all times and just switch between the two.. Holding down the home icon on the phone is a great way to switch between apps on android.. I had the pre and trust me it is not something that you are going to unbearably miss..

OMG! That's one thing I am going to miss from my blackberry && iPhone! Beejive!!! I believe Beejive is the best instant messenger out there & it sucks that I paid for a user license & now have to give it up! Oh well hopefully they will come to Android soon and then I can use it once again. But for now I am looking for an app similar to that for my EVO!

The best app is definitely meebo IMHO. It stays connected for the most part but drains the battery a bit. For some reason I don't see the built in IM client on the Evo. That's a tad strange

I hope the come up with an Android app also. However, they seem to be very slow in their development. It took them ages to get to 2.0 it seemed like. And even now, there are issues with it and nothing seems to be happening. Hopefully I can find something really good to use for Android.

No thanks. the last thing I need is yet another chat client for some subset of my friends. I already have to deal with people on gtalk, skype, aim, yahoo, msn, and ICQ.

What we need more of for android is an IM client consolidator, like trillian, etc.

Cerulean Studios’ Blog Trillian for Android

And yeah, there's another thread for this, so..... /end

If you setup groups on meebo.com (website) like Family and Friends and then move your contacts to the appropriate group, it will sort on the mobile meebo app.

I haven't used any of the ones mentioned so my favorite is a bit biased. But I really like the Trillian Beta, it's free, for now any ways. And works very well. I guess I'll have to try this Meebo and see what it's about

I got my Galaxy S 3 days ago and I've tried several clients already. I've tried Fring, Palringo, Im+, Nimbuzz, eBuddy and Meebo. So far, eBuddy has been the best one. I'm looking for an IM that supports MSN, Facebook and Skype but haven't found one yet since they're always either failing on skype or facebook.

eBuddy supports facebook and msn and is really fast and stays in the background for quick access. eBuddy would be perfect for me if it supported skype. Definitely the easiest to set up with facebook.

Meebo seemed really nice too but I didn't like it when it was constantly beeping even when the chat was active. Didn't know how to change it so it would only beep when you were out of the chat. Also they removed the support for facebook so it was not an option for me since I want at least a program that supports at least two of the IMs I use.

Nimbuzz seemed really heavy to me and had to force close it a few times. I had problems connecting to skype constantly.

Palringo just made me rage quit a few seconds after I tried it and is not as easy to use as eBuddy for example. Didn't allow multi-connection with computer and phone at the same time.

Fring seemed fine but lacked facebook and skype so didn't want to use it.

IM+ worked probably the best with skype compared to others I tried. It seemed to be the potential program for me. It supports for MSN, skype AND facebook, which is exactly what I was looking for but I ran into problems verifying the facebook. Also it was a bit slow when sending messages on MSN. Also skype was of course only chat, not calls.

So from these options I chose eBuddy and I'm still trying to find on program for MSN, Skype and Facebook and preferrably support for calling with skype without using skypeout credits, but if anyone knows an app for skype only with calling support without skypeout, please tell me.

@badapple - I went through a similar search as you. I was looking for an IM app that supported skype, msn and aim. I tried everything...finally landed on imo.im. been happy so far. It doesn't support skype calls, but I only use the im feature so it was fine by me.

Trillian kills them all IMO, and I've been through Palringo, Ebuddy, you name it.

And the thing is, Trillian's only gonna get better too.

Except, according to triallan's email response to me, it should be priced on par with the iphone app, which sells for $5.

Sounds like the reviews do make it the best IM, but might not be with the $5 over the other choices for some people.

If trillian really is like it was on computer, then I'll gladly buy it. I used to use it on computer for years although I switched back to normal msn since it didn't have all the features of msn then, but it certainly is good. If it supports skype and fb perfectly, even better.

I'll check it out .

EDIT: imo.im seems to be working really well on all of them, although I still kinda like the way how ebuddy looked and worked. Imo.im is still probably going to be the IM client I'm going to use since it supports all of the clients I need without any problems. Small minus to grammar mistakes. Thanks SpicyTacoto .

I wouldn't mind paying the $5 for Trillian. It's my favorite IM app (I use AIM, MSN, Gtalk, and FB) and it's the easiest on my battery. What I wouldn't pay for is Beejive which hit the market at $10.

@BadApple: It doesn't support Skype as of now. You can try out the free beta.

Easyroid's IMEasy is pretty good, a bit of a battery drain compared to their individual IM apps, they also have Hi MSN, Hi Yahoo, Hi GTalk (beta), Hi Facebook, Hi NateOn, etc. and a handful of themes and font packs.

Using Beejive here, seems to consume 2.4-2.9% of the CPU and 1.6% at idle.

I'm a devout Trillian user now. I wanted to support BeeJive, but after the money I spent on a User License got changed to a Blackberry User License, I abandoned it and went to Trillian. After years of using their desktop client, I was happy to jump in it.

Trillian. It's not even close. Nearly nonexistent battery usage, you can change user pics, the interface is gorgeous, it's just amazing.

Did the rest of you miss the part where the op said he needs skype? Last I checked, trillian doesn't support skype.

I found nimbuzz to be horrible. There is no visual alert when a message is received, it dropped my connection to skype constantly (with no notification of same) and I had noticable battery drain.

I dropped nimbuzz like a hot potato as soon as I found imo.im.

Trillian is the best. It's a winner and anyone who doesn't at least try it is a total schmuck.

OK, I'm going to go check out Trillian now as it seems to be the unanimous winner!
For texting I love Hancent, and would be SHOCKED if I end up liking it more.

I'll come back tonight after i spend a few hours with it.

Hmm, been using Nimbuzz since my Symbian days, but seems like Trillian takes the cake here. Me going to check it out.

Yep, another vote for Trillian. Even on the desktop Trillian is the best IM app out there.

Anyone know why Trillian wouldn't be available outside the US? App Market says it can't install to my Android.

Default tried a few...

I have tried a few messengers and have so far found the imo.im messenger my favourite. I have had some non sent messages but I think that might just be my internet reception playing havoc with my phone.

I like this for 3 reasons... 1. It is always on and I get notifications promptly when I receive a message. 2. I can see if a person is typing a message which is important to me. 3. You can send pics or vids or even audio...

It hasnt failed me yet. And the 2 times my message wasnt sent, the person on the other side got a message saying it wasnt sent so I just resent it. I jus long pressed on the chat and copied and pasted it into the chat window and so it wasnt a pain to resend the message. I'm not sure if this is an option for other messengers because ive tried a few and I couldnt copy and paste on them? And this is a must have feature for me jus incase i wanted to highlight something someone said and needed them to clarify it.

Go sms pro is a must have sms app for me. I used Handsent aswell but go just seemed nicer so i uninstalled Handsent and stuck with Go. And if you have the Go launcher you can have the widget on one of your homescreens and this allows you to scroll through and read your messagers as well as reply to them from the homescreen. Very nice.
